Indiana 74, Illinois 47 POSTGAME

What would you say if you were him?

I'd probably go full scale Bruce Weber melt down. Blame the players and say "I'm going to the Cheesecake Factory to get a scotch."

Or

I'd probably start with an acknowledgement that the wheels came off the second half and that I (and my staff) have got to do a better job of getting the players back on track. I'd also add that its my responsibility to call plays to put us in a position to get easier shots.

"Look, I'm frustrated. I don't like losing, those men in the locker room don't like losing. We're going to battle these next few games and try to get better everyday. We're going to start building towards making a run at the BTT title and put our self in a great place, not a good place, but a great place, heading into next season."

That's the best i could come up with after 30 minutes, maybe he should have started working on his draft during half time because nothing else he did seemed to matter.

I was struck during the game by just how often the Indiana player hit nothing but net and how often we clanged it off the iron. I honestly didn't think that their shots were that much better than ours, but they must have been. Not sure what the shooting percentages were, but the practical difference was night and day.

Anyone with more basketball experience than this fan have a comment on that?

Would be great if someone kind would post our +/- first half and second half for every game this season. The difference is incredible and I think that falls on the coach.

What is more worrisome than the game itself is Groce's post-game comments that we got a lot of good shots but they just didn't fall. What the what? Our offense looked absolutely putrid the ENTIRE game, save maybe the first 5 minutes. The offensive game plan is really pretty simple to defend, you have to be able to cover the initial on the ball screen and usually 1 or two screens in the paint or on the wing. The problem is that whoever isn't involved in the screen is usually just standing and watching. I bet you could count on one hand how many times someone on our team creates a good shot for someone else. To me, more than anything else, the ineptitude we continue to show under Groce is the reason I have no more faith in his sales pitch.

Exactly this. There is almost nothing happening off the ball, and there's almost always only one action to defend at a time. And all too often, that action is something like a ball screen for Lewis that the defense doesn't have to concern itself with

1.) They have better shooters than we do
2.) They run an offense that actually gets shooters open in a position to score
3.) Their players close out with high hands on defense. Ours don't play defense.

Let's face it guys the only tournament we're going to is the B1G tournament , Groce has be shifting his line ups since day one we never had a steady line up to gain any continuity and that means no chemistry we were doomed from the first injury, so we can whine all we want if we don't have a steady line up and rotation we not winning nothing.

I think one of my least favorite aspects of the college game is how much of it is determined by one or two players that can create. The offensive game plan is usually so scripted. You hardly ever see guys moving with an intent to find an opening or spacing. They are either not moving and watching other people who are moving. Or if they are the one moving, they are usually moving to some predetermined place on the court (which the defense usually knows where you are going.) I know a good point guard could make all the world of a difference, but man do we look bad.

To be honest I just flat out don't understand this team. Sooner or later a player needs to stand up and say I'm tired of losing. Confidence and chemistry are two things this team lacks and in my opinion that's why you see a lot of hero ball and standing on the top of the key because no one has any idea what they are doing. Ball movement is something that is very Easy to teach as is guarding the three but these kids still can't do it. Something is wrong and it's not just cuz we are missing 3 players. This is the same issue you saw last year.

In conference only
Team 1st 2nd OT Total
Mich +3 -13 -10
tOSU -4 +2 -2
MSU -25 0 -25
Purd 0 +14 +14
Neb -9 -2 -11
IU -17 -17 -34
Minn +5 -5 +5 +5
tOSU -5 +5 -5 -5
Wisc -5 -3 -8
Rut -3 +3 +9 +9
Wisc +5 -14 -9
IU +1 -28 -27
YTD -54 -58 +9 -103

We've lost the first half by 54, the second half by 58 and we've won the overtime by 9.
Overall, terrible, but I don't see the second half as materially different.

Thorne should not even be here? Oh brother, and I'll assume you didn't accidentally spell Groces name wrong.

The difference? Take that Wisconsin team and remove their two best lost players and their pg. How good are they?

That's exaclty what happened and look where they are this year. I think that was his point.

I'm talking about from this current roster with injuries like Illinois suffered so no that wasn't his point.

They lost their 2 best players from last year, yet we returned our 2 best players from last year....(okay, maybe 2nd and 3rd)... Listen, I get where you are coming from. But there has to be a point in time where the excuses just don't work any more. I feel like we are at that point now. Maybe you don't. It's all subjective.

My observation from this game is that we seemed to have a pretty good game plan going into the game. I saw, what appeared to be, a concerted effort to develop an inside game or more dribble drive looks. When Indiana started to punch us in the mouth, we panicked and seemed to not have an semblance of an offensive structure. This seems to be a trend I have noticed in many of the games we have played this year. Some of this is coaching but some of it is the makeup of the players we have recruited.

Well with one more game to shoot, it's start, will make 20 consecutive years of working every Men's home game. So I have that to look forward two I guess. M & W teams combined at home this year have won 3 B1G games.

That's some serious professionalism there, photog

Adding Abrams, Nichols, and Lucas to the team I watched tonight does not make this a tournament team... We would definitely be better, but not by enough to make this team much more than competent. This worries me greatly.

Compare the player ratings of said healthy juniors and freshmen on each team. One program develops players and runs a system that works. The other does not. Himey's point is valid.
