Obviously all of us here are major Illini folks (otherwise we wouldn't be on this board). I ask myself when I looking at the program over the last 10 years - If I was a star basketball player in high school or middle school now... what would make me want to go to Illinois?

What a great point. Unless you had always wanted to play for your home school or a couple of your buddies were there already and love it there's really not much reason is there?

:( :chief:

Even with IU taking 3 combo/lead guards in the 2016 class and having a need for bigs with Max and maybe Bryant leaving?

Maybe they need to tell Rob Judson to stop going to so many Manual games?

We could go on and on about playing time - but that seems played out.

This is where that whole "recruiting" thing from the coaches comes into play. Why did JCL want to come here? Why did black want to come here? Why did TJL want to come here over waiting for a Wisconsin offer that was coming?

I don't know but it's becoming clear that Groce is going to have to real in bigger fish than what he's been able to thus far if he's going to compete for a Big Ten title.

Depends on what bigger fish means...Iowa is competing for title with a team of 3 and 4 stars. I will definitely take 5 stars (Tilmon) though:)

Bottom line I think you have to have the "right fish"..not necessarily bigger ones (PG and C). We have "big enough fish" at 2-4 positions to compete for b10, IMO.

I'm optimistic that TL is one of the missing fish...next is C.

The premise that John Groce will win consistently with 3-4 stars and compete with for B1G titles is clearly wrong. I do not think that Groce is as bad as some posters make him out to be, but he has already been here for 4 years, and there has been absolutely nothing in his coaching, no indication whatsoever, that indicates that he has the ability to compete for B1G titles with 3-4 stars. Absolutely none.

Unfortunately, there is no indication that he can compete for B1G titles with 5* players either, but at least there is an ounce of hope. But he first has to prove that he can successfully recruit 5* players, and close the deal.

We need better talent, no doubt about it. Unless Groce can recruit an excellent 2017 class, there is very little hope for the future.

But how will we lure one in?

Here's hoping TJL bucks the trend of "the one that got away" PGs (DJax, Snider, Ulis, Watson...), otherwise we're once again just swimming upstream.

Correct. And it appears that the Coach is heading in the same direction as in past years with the 2017 class. He seems to be heavily invested in the Illinois guys and a few other name players from out of state. All excellent players, but if he wiffs on the selected few (as before )we have no backup plan. It is also bothersome that in the known targets we do not have any real PG's or Centers(save Tilmon). Seems like the Coach is still on his rinse and repeat recruiting cycle.

Ahh, we have a couple pg recruits actually.

Speaking of recruiting against IU, Brian Snow tweeted that Tom Crean offered JCL on JCL's birthday after his Freshman year in HS.

Isn't Williams a PG recruit? I could have swore he was. I also know he is after a few others from reading different articles (just can't think of names right now).

Some think in the true PG sense, no. Still in the mix for McKinley Wright and Trent Frazier.

I saw on Verbal commits that Illinois has offered 2017 Terrence Lewis a 6'6" wing who was co-player of the year in Milwaukee City League. Open the Beer City pipeline, I'm thirsty. His Dad is his HS coach @ Milwaukee Riverside.

We have Pickett

We have offered Goodwin and Negron from the forward ranks. Tillmon at the Center spot and Williams at the guard spot. If anyone listened to Saturday Sportline today, Joe Hendrickson said there is a real chance we get the class we have been wanting. He is usually not that revealing. He also said that if you get the class from 2017, then TF fits in with them great. :shield:
