Bill Cubit Fired

Maybe he has a big deal in the works and it is really time sensitive? Trying to think of extraneous circumstances. Hard to wrap my head around it.

He has had a crazy schedule with some competing obligations at wustl. Do we know where he is today? Maybe this was time-critical and had to get out as soon as possible. Can't imagine he wasn't in Champaign for this, but very odd indeed. Not trying to make excuses, just trying to come up with an explanation.

Bah gawd Jim, that's PJ Fleck's music!

That's pretty much the only college coach I could imagine would leave his team right now, and there were those "row the boat" references in the Whitman presser. Leslie Frazier seems like a good guess too.

infinitely more optimistic about the football program with Fleck or Frazier in charge

There is, unfortunately, zero chance this was a good idea.

So you complain continuously about Cubit's extension and now complain of his dismissal, did you apply for the AD position?

How about waiting to see who the replacement is. I'm thinking he has a replacement ready.

I'm not saying there's zero chance this ends well, but this is a rash, unnecessarily risky decision by a novice AD, the optics of which have already been bungled horribly.

Whitman has my full support and I hope he has an ace up his sleeve. But the situation is what it is.

+1. Some people complain when water is wet. I now think it's very interesting that JW thanked Frazier during the opening press conference. I wonder if he had been in touch with him prior to him publicly accepting the AD job. Most people on here were furious when Cubit got the extension and wanted the new AD to have the ability to make that decision. Well our new AD agreed with those people.

Bold move on first official day on the job. Can't imagine this came out of the blue. I do agree that he must have someone in line. People probably calling him letting him know they are interested in the job now that he's at the helm. Hopefully he got interest from someone he couldn't pass on and didn't want to wait for another year and lose this person. I've been very impressed with JDubs so far so I'll give him a vote of confidence.

Feel bad for the players they should have been told. But they wouldn't be happy no matter what the timing. In my mind Cubit deserves to be fired just for giving his son that raise.

I love that Whitman did this. I just hope he has an idea of the hire. It will probably hurt us in the short term. But start the rebuild sooner. We will probably lose some more players.

All of this +1000.

If Whitman isn't bringing someone in who can get the players 100% on board in the first week of spring practice, 2016 is going to look an awful lot like Turner year 1.

Completely disagree. It is 100% certain that Cubit would have been fired in November. Why suffer through all the speculation and criticism for another season, which would be worse for the players. The right decision is to stop the charade, swallow the bitter pill now, and begin the rebuild. Whitman may have bungled the announcement, but I think he's made 2 very good decisions today.

The whole Cubit thing was ridiculous so he's just ending it now.

Cubit knew he was a dead man walking which is why he got what he could get for his son when he had the chance. He was dead to me once he made that move.

What? Who do they expect to get now?

The short term doesn't matter - we are terrible and waiting until the end of this season hurts us even more. I am confident Whitman can smooth things over with the players.

I agree with another poster in this thread in that I think that the news was possibly leaked by Cubit. There is no way a person that intelligent and with his experience as a player, would mess up an announcement this badly.

In any case I agree it was a good move.

Because the coaching market is available after another season.

This is like saying you're going to do all of your Christmas shopping at 3 o'clock in the morning on a random Tuesday two weeks before Thanksgiving. All that matters in the end is that you get the right presents that your family wants (that's the big difference in this hypothetical, it is NOT the thought that counts in coach hiring). Maybe you know exactly what you need to buy and you can get it online somewhere. But all the stores are closed. If you just wait, all the stores will be available to you, there will be big sales, the world of Christmas shopping will be open. Why force it now and risk narrowing your options to things that your family won't like?

That would make sense. Cubit leaked and the only option they had was a fast announcement via Twitter.
