Just a completely outstanding hire. At a minimum, his teams will have rock-solid D/special teams and we will contend in the B1G West every year. Certainly a ton of national exposure.

I will go out on a limb and say that within 5 years, Smith will put together a D that will rival Tepper's greats from the mid-90's that featured Holocek, Howard, Hardy and Rice.:shield:

Lovie meeting the team. This right here gets me pumped.

P.S. Does the bad spacing between "TO" and "WIN" bother anyone else? #OCD

If my math is correct, that's $3.5 million per year over 6 years.

Wonder how much the Tampa 2 years impacted that...basically the first 2 years don't matter to Tubby since Tampa is paying the difference to 10 million... gives it an incentive to back load the contract, if there weren't any clauses in the Tampa deal, I would have asked for $1/year for first 2 years & give me the rest of the 4 million in year 3+

It's 9am here in Chicago, and I've already had 8 or 9 coworkers come up to me and mention how huge of a move this is. None of them went to Illinois.

Everyone is talking about this. It's just amazing.

Lovie to be on Mike & Mike tomorrow

Dan or anyone who is good at this technology stuff, can we have a posting on the home page or thread that is links to audio/video interviews with Lovie this week? I have to imagine there will be a healthy list:

The 2pm presser, M&M, ESPN1000 (Chicago), Champaign radio, 670 the Score (chicago), many others????

When is the last time an Illinois coach was on this many radio spots? 2005 during NC weekend in St. Louis?

I would bet that Expect to Win was there from Beckman...just the way it is put up there
Can anyone else see Beckman getting assistance at Kinkos trying to get the banner printed out?

If your looking for something quick. Howard Griffith was on 670 today around 8 am and shortly after that JFW was on as well. Lovie will be on 670 tomorrow morning they said.

That slogan has Beckman written all over it. (The first thing that popped into my mind was "Expect Two Wins," but I digress). I imagine it will take a few weeks to exorcise the place of that stuff. It's another, perhaps minor plus of hiring Lovie, for me at least -- whatever else he is, Lovie is not into all that goofball schtick. No wristbands with the B1G title game date on it. No strained acronyms that can't be explained using human language. What he lacks in on-camera charisma he makes up for in not generating memes and deadspin hit pieces.

Anybody notice Whitman looks a lot like Jon Hamm?? Can we get some gifs in here please!

If he talks about lasagna in the press conference, does Whitman come in and give him the axe immediately? Which is probably what MT should have done with Beckman.

The way I look at it, it's $17 million 4 years. The first two don't count, because Tempa is still paying him, and we got a discount.

Correct. 6 years, $21 million. Less than Jason Heyward AND no opt out clause.
