Illinois Football Staff Thread

They broke the news that he was staying, i dont see it anymore.

Coaching Search originally reported Spencer was joining Lovie. Then Football Scoop tweeted "contrary to a report," that report being Coaching Search's, that Spencer was staying in TB. Coaching Search then deleted the tweet saying Spencer was leaving.

The only thing Coaching Search tweeted about Spencer since deleting their original tweet is this.

Too bad to hear Spencer is staying in TB. Would have been another great addition to this already outstanding staff. I think we surprise a lot of people with how quickly this program turns around. We're not working with a totally depleted roster, and with Lovie's brand recognition I'd be shocked if we had a recruiting class outside of the top 3 in the Big Ten this coming year. Maybe even do so well as to have a top 10 recruiting class nationally? I'm tempted to say we can sneak into the top 5 nationally, but I don't want to jinx our good fortune...and I'm not superstitious, haha

Top 10 or 5 nationally is a tough nut to crack when your base is in the state of Illinois.

Think about it a little differently. Who is our competition? Who is in the way of where we want to go? It's the Big Ten West. Here are the Big Ten West's national recruiting rankings over the past several years, counting backwards:

Nebraska: 25th, 31st, 32nd, 17th, 25th

Wisconsin: 36th, 37th, 33rd, 57th, 56th

Iowa: 42nd, 59th, 62nd, 55th, 43rd

Minnesota: 50th, 52nd, 52nd, 61st, 72nd

Northwestern: 47th, 56th, 67th, 54th, 60th

Purdue: 73rd, 68th, 71st, 56th, 33rd

We were in the talent mix with these teams anyway. Under freakin Beckman. Now we have a better paid, better qualified staff than any of them. Start grabbing top 30 classes with a handful of four stars that are well-scouted good fits and good kids that will stay in the program, and the cream is going to rise here over time. Brick by brick.

The support from the administration so far is even more surprising.

Bingo! Nail meet head. We weren't going to see forward motion until we had the commitment to be great again. Regardless of history or where we think we should be as a school or a program, that commitment has to be there, along with the budget to go after big name hires. I feel like we finally have that commitment to be great again, and are willing to back it up. This is an exciting time to be an Illini fan, my friends. I am very excited and may even pay for cable TV again. ;):D

Actually, i think coaching search had it first and now it's gone. I know for a fact they had it and it's deleted. The only thing they have now, its not a done deal, still weighing options.

TB beat reporter on Hardy Nickerson:

I can confirm reports that Hardy Nickerson is indeed headed to Illinois to be Lovie Smith's new defensive coordinator.

Yet another impressive hire. This staff is going to close on recruits. Nickerson looks like another poster child for college athletics - Cal grad, All-Pro NFL player. I can hardly believe this is all real.

Right on. We just need Top 30ish classes on an annual basis to have the best roster in the West. That goal has never seemed so realistic.

Feeling really good about the staff now. I would have ranked Mcgee and spencer as co-most exciting hires. I wish we could get spencer. But even without him I am happy. We should be able to recruit. I say two years and we are winning our division of the Big. Just need to get the players here.

Pretty sure that's what I just said. Search originally reported he was joining Illinois staff.

Scoop said that wasn't true.

Search then tweeted that it's still up in the air.

No, they had it first that he was staying in Tampa Bay and now it's gone. Maybe they deleted it on accident, but it caught my eye that it is gone now.

Under Zook, for reference:

31st, 20th, 23rd, 35th.

We reprise that and I guarantee you we're going to be off to the races.

I have a feeling Lovie will recruit better citizens and they will be able to stay around. Many of Zook's recruits were high risk/high reward with no backup plan.

If coaches were equal, we just need top 30ish classes. But I think Lovie is a superior coach to all of those programs, I would probably argue that we don't even need top 50 classes with Lovie as a coach, we just need a year or so for players to acclimate to his system. I think Lovie is talented enough a coach that we will see a drastic turnaround (given our division) next year.
