The unathletic kid from Lincoln Way posted up on Goodwin and scored. Chastain would score on Goodwin, the issue would be Goodwin's other D-1 teammates.

This is quite comical to be honest. To say that Goodwin was to completely hold the LWW kid scoreless is so far fetched. A kid can be very good defensively and still get scored on. Being good defensively is making it difficult for the player to score and contesting everything. I don't think there has ever been a single player that has held someone completely scoreless...help defense is the reason why

I sure hope so, I think you could make a reasonable argument Kiwane is one of the 10 best players to wear the Illini uniform since the flying Illini left campus.

I should have prefaced that Kiwane was a far more polished and college ready player when he got here. Kiwane is TJL ceiling imo

I saw a video of Lucas on here a while back where I swear he looked better - faster and stouter. But if it was from before his sr. year, then I don't know, that wouldn't make sense.

For Groce's offense to be run at its best, the most important piece is a snot-quick pg who can turn the corner on a high pick and get into the lane/to the basket, where having hops is ultimately more important than height. Is that Lucas? I don't know. But I think he's at least good enough so we won't be playing 4 on 5 like we have of late.

The LW kid had a field day against Manual. Against BA, pretty much the opposite. Goodwin locked the kid down. Not saying a helluva lot. Goodwin had uber athleticism over him, is an utter bull and is two inches taller.

Which isn't to say that Goodwin is a lockdown D1 defender. That is gonna take some time, if ever.

The LW kid (some Italian name....Bonato?...) was a really good high school player. I thought he was an animal and the only reason LW hung for a little bit. Really impressed how hard he tried against Althoff. They were way overmatched but had a great ride.

Goodwin is going to bring a lot of W's wherever he goes. I hope he gets on TV up in the Chicagoland next year.

It's not all about quickness and athleticism. This kid isn't at the top of those categories, but I think he has enough to be effective. He looks like a basketball player to me. He can drive/finish (very advanced off hand), create/pass and shoot from the outside. It's that multi-threat that we've been lacking in the guy with the ball in his hands the most. He definitely reminds me of Kiwane Garris as was pointed out earlier (again-style only comparison at this point--Kiwane was a GREAT player) and Melo Trimble also from a style perspective come to mind. There are many ways to succeed in college basketball.

"Chastain passes the eye test against 1A competition. How would he do with Goodwin guarding him? Chastain said that the kid on Leo was the best player he had ever played against. That kid is not a D-1 player. I think Chastain is skilled but he is not a sure thing at the next level until we see him against real competition."

The unathletic kid from Lincoln Way posted up on Goodwin and scored. Chastain would score on Goodwin, the issue would be Goodwin's other D-1 teammates.

That kid was averaging 20 a game. He got 10 against Althoff, and 4 of them were late when the game was basically over and Goodwin was out. He also was 4-18 from the field.

I am not against recruiting Chastain. He is far more athletic than the kid from Lincoln Way. I would just like to see him play against competition above 1A.

I took a picture with Dee Brown when he was with the JAZZ, I'm 6 feet tall with shoes. I had a couple of inches on Dee, I would say Dee Brown is 5-10 barefoot.

This is a picture of me on the right with Dee Brown last summer. I'm 5'11" and am wearing shoes.

Ill say this for TJL but it goes for TA next year as well. This team does not need Chris Paul to walk through the door to get a huge upgrade at pg. IF Tracy can fill good minutes anywhere close to the still flawed pg he was a few years ago we just got a lot better at pg. If TJL can adjust his game and learn to start the year, and start to come on later he can be a huge upgrade to what we have had at pg the past 2 years as well. I don't think its unrealistic to see that out of TJL either. We have seen a lot of freshmen develop well under Groce during the second half of the year.

I agree completely. PG play this year (and last) was so awful that it shouldn't be hard to improve on.

I'm sure this may have already been mentioned but Chastain has only gotten an offer from one power conference school and that's Utah. He's better served going to a Missouri Valley school. He's already gotten offers from Loyola, both ISUs, and Evansville. No matter where he goes, whether it's D-I or D-II, he's likely gonna redshirt his freshman year just to put on some weight.

Just for comparison, can you imagine the numbers some of these big recruits would put up if they played 1A basketball? Put Goodwin or Pickett or Da'Monte on a team where they are by far the best player up against inferior competition, they'd probably average 40 or more.

For those of you saying he isn't getting respect because he plays 1A, I think respect is earned these days during the AAU season. The high school season isn't near as important as summer. All of these major recruits play on national level AAU teams where they face the best players at the major national tournaments. I follow the AAU scene pretty closely and I've never head of Chastain.

Just watched TJL's senior video mix. Nice. What I saw was a release on his jumper that rivals Melo Trimble's for Maryland. Very quick, very accurate.

Think he was hurt last summer, not sure.

Ok, perhaps I misunderstood. It still shows that Chastain has not been exposed to the caliber of athlete he would face in the BT. Again, how would he look against Goodwin? I'd like to see that.

I would not be unhappy if we took Chastain. He has potential. I rooted for him. My daughter teaches at Leroy.

I don't disagree that he hasn't seen the level of competition he will see at a high level D1, but that doesn't mean he can't adjust. It worked just fine for guys in the past like Brian Sloan, Marty Simmons, Brian Cardinal, but I do agree it's hard to tell until they get there. I think so much of it is mental and how they respond when they aren't always the fastest, biggest, best leaper, etc.

AAU season should help answer the questions regarding his ability

Tom Michael, T.J. Wheeler, etc...there have been plenty of small school players who have had some success at Illinois.

I think the biggest question is does he fit an area of need or are we just trying to fill an open scholarship.

Personally, I would prefer another big.

He was injured last AAU season.

If Nunn and or Tate don't return I'd take a chance on him . He'd be the most athletic player on the floor for Illinois from day one . And it seems he can shoot the ball . Work on his defense and ball skills and you might have something special. I really like the way he elevates on his shot . I think he's a player.
