Groce/Whitman Press Conference

I really hate the "we all made mistakes at that age/ we all were young and dumb once" reasoning when talking about something as serious as a couple of these players are accused of.

Getting way too drunk and throwing up in the dorms is being young and dumb, can't say the same for domestic violence.

Again, I'm not presuming guilt over innocence, just feel that the comments aren't appropriate with the severity of some of these claims.

Screw me...

I guess Tom thibodeau didn't answer his phone when josh called. Ugh why can't we be rid of this disaster?

You honestly thought this would be a firing press conference? Really? It was obvious it was going to be a public backing of Groce and how we will take everything seriously.

How much of this today has to do with 2 recruits in 2017 being close to jumping on board but still have reservations about the issues and Groce being let go?

After paying serious attention to the entire press conference I now seriously believe that Whitman and especially Groce take these very serious accusations very seriously.

Probably some but I think it's simpler than that. If Groce is your guy, then you have to back him 100%, until the very day that he isn't. Could be years, could be months, could be days. The minute you stop vocally backing your own coach, you immediately hurt recruiting. This was necessary with so much speculation in the public.

I'm confused. On the west coast, pretty sure it's two hours ahead there... so this already happened? Was it just so black and white, "business as usual", that it hasn't been worth detailing exactly what was said ITT?

That went very poorly. Whitman and Groce both presented a basketball program and athletic department that is quite tone-deaf.

At least JW reaffirmed his confidence in Groce, which is more than we got with previous AD's. We at least know what to expect going into next year. I honestly think this was the right move to make and (minus the off-court incidents) is pretty much what I expected a year ago to happen when we knew a couple of our starting players were going to be missing the season - aka a mediocre at best season where we'd miss the tourney but many would be calling for Groce's firing despite the injury factor being a huge part of why this season was a lost cause, topped by the start of a good to great 2017 class. Who REALLY thought Groce wouldn't get a pass for this year with all the ridiculous bad luck that befell his team and a 2017 class that could be make-or-break?

If this is really what the conference is, then it pretty obviously for recruitment purposes.

Maybe to people that wanted a staff change or Groce gone. I think it went as ideal as it could have gone from a PR standpoint. People expecting some real answers were fooling themselves from the get-go.

I think Werner is the best reporter on the Illinois beat, largely for his general success in doing what I'm asking here - act as his reader's representative in reporting on events like this one.

A question that I thought Werner should ask to JG was, how he (JG) felt about the season, about the apparent lack of intensity in many games, and while we all saw individuals improve, what the coach thought was the reason it took until February for these individuals to come together as a team... After all, individual stats aside, this is a TEAM sport...
