Reading the comments to that, Tubby's buyout was 900,000, Beard's is a million. Check goes from Memphis to Tech to UNLV before it gets cashed.

No kidding...that is a great hire.
It's a very solid hire, and Pastner is the worst prominent coach in the country, and they were so totally trapped by that buyout.
In terms of a sudden, totally unexpected, totally out of left field coaching upgrade, I give that 4.5 out of 5 Lovie's

Mediocre at best hire by Memphis. If you are going to go out and spend over $3 million annually you should get someone with more upside than Tubby Smith.

Probably a lot of mixed emotion, happy to be rid of Pastner. Happy to avoid the buyout. Probably not too thrilled over the Tubby hire.
Some Memphis fansm, likely the delusional ones, may be pissed but he was the best candidate they could get this year. He doesn't need much upside, he just needs to get Memphis to stop the bleeding, and become respectable enough for the next coach IMO. He's not a long term solution and probably wasn't meant to be, but they were heading nowhere with Pastner.
Wait Memphis fans thought they could get Gregg Marshall, wanted Penny Hardaway, and are now primarily focused on whether Hardaway can be brought on as an assistant?

nah, thinking you can do better than tubby smith for $3 million plus isn't delusional it's perfectly sane. I doubt he does any better than Pastner.
He's light years better than Pastner, particularly in terms of making adjustments in-game and in-season. It's not like this guy hasn't taken 5 teams to the tourney and has a ring.
