He's light years better than Pastner, particularly in terms of making adjustments in-game and in-season. It's not like this guy hasn't taken 5 teams to the tourney and has a ring.

Tubby has 1 tournament win since he left Kentucky. Pastner has 2 during that time. I wouldn't have wanted either and would have pursued Will Wade or another up and comer.

I think Tubby is better than Pastner, but maybe not by much. I mean Pastner has to be the worst coach in college. At least at one of the higher profile jobs. I think Tubby has name recognition that doesnt = his coaching ability. I wouldnt be surprised to see him be able to recruit just as well or even a little better than Pastner did at Memphis.

nah, thinking you can do better than tubby smith for $3 million plus isn't delusional it's perfectly sane. I doubt he does any better than Pastner.

His coaching ability is light years ahead of Pastner's. Plus him coaching AAC, and he'll have them in the tourney every year.

yes, but pastner is a much better recruiter. I would not want either guy coaching my team. I'd think for $3 million a year you could do better than a guy that has won a single tournament game over the last 9 seasons. They could probably have had Weber for $1 million less.

You mean Memphis is the much better recruiter. Tubby will be a good recruiter at Memphis cause Memphis spends that dough

I think Tubby is being underrated here, and I also think you guys didn't actually watch Memphis in recent years. You had to be there man, the way Pastner wasted the unbelievable talent he had was something to see.

Pastner's recruiting has been over-hyped by many. His classes haven't been that good, besides a couple of them. Pretty average really. Tubby probably won't be much better but he'll be a much better coach.

Nah, 2 of his last 3 classes were ranked in the top 10. I agree Pastner sucks, the point is Tubby isn't much of an upgrade, especially at a $3 million price tag.

You do know that I said a couple right? He's been a coach there for more than 3 years. Besides, how many of those guys from those classes are still there..

Agree with the comment concerning Tubby Smith being underrated as a coach.

But can't recall a coach actually taking another, different job so soon after actually accepting an offer.

Right, the third-party swoop in.

I'm racking my brain here, I can't remember any.

Everyone thought it was going to happen when Pitt had just hired Paul Chryst and Bret Bielema left for Arkansas, and Chryst might well have taken the job, but ole Barry decided it was more self-righteous to make a big public show of NOT going after him.

Well you are still off base here, he has had three top 10 recruiting classes, 2 of which were top 3. I'm just talking recent history. He is a terrible coach, and GT did Memphis an enormous favor.

There may have been some agreement in principle behind the scenes with Billy Clyde and Arkansas, but that's not the same thing.

Chris Beard stood at the podium. That's the officially official officialness.

He had one juco player and wasn't really in the running for anyone notable for the 2016 class. His 2015 class was ranked 14th, which is pretty good but not great for a class with 5 players. His 2014 class wasn't in the top 30. His 2013 class was 3rd and a great one indeed but half of those guys aren't even on the team. I think retention is a pretty big part of recruiting. The 2012 class wasn't in the top 30 either. He hasn't even recruited a top 100 shooting guard since 2010 so even if he landed some highly ranked classes, it doesn't mean much when it doesn't address key weaknesses. I think that alone makes him an overrated recruiter.

I don't get why it's so hard for you admit he's a very good recruiter. He had nothing to sell but still landed 4 5-star recruits plus Dedric Lawson who was a McDonald's AA. That's a very good rate over a 7 year period. Seems like you are just very intent on adopting contrarian positions.

I think he was a good recruiter, but slightly over hyped. He got Lawson, but him and his brother are from Memphis and I believe he had to hire their dad to get them to come.

He landed Lawson cause he hired his dad. He also got gift wrapped a program that top 15 at the time, and now it dropped a lot.

Anyways, since Tubby is a better coach, he will coach up the talent that is on the roster.
