Illini Football 2016

Away games?

I'd love to go to some games at Memorial Stadium, what with all my fellow Illini in the stands, Block I :illinois:, the Marching Illini:clappy: and Chief Illiniwek:chief: at halftime to go with all the football. Alas, it's a 12 hour drive which makes it hard to fit into a weekend.

So there are away games, and this year I'm going to Rutgers. (I could have gone to PSU for football last year, and glad I didn't...). It would be fun to go to sit with My Own Kind. It helps with the eventual brawls to have someone watching your back. To that end, I contacted the U of I ticket office because the nice folks at Rutgers told me that the university gets a block of tickets. Here's the response I received:

"We are given an allotment of tickets from away games. Typically those are only sold to our current IFUND members and season ticket holders. We have not gone on sale with them at this time. If you would like to contact us in June or July, we can see what we can do to help you out. Typically we don’t get very good seats and you can purchase better seats through the home school. We don’t have prices or any further details at this time."

That said, shouldn't some savvy Champaign/Urbana travel agent put together packages including a purchase of a block of seats we can color orange?

Hope we can get to that point. With our history over the last 30 years, we have trouble doing that at home let alone that far away. Hopefully that starts to change now.

I would think that for the Rutgers game, considering the size of the New York metro area, there would be a lot of Illini willing to come, especially for what promises to be a rout...and a lot of good tickets available. I'm in PA and will take the relatively short trip, closer than Chicago to Champaign.

Maybe the NYC Illini Club will put something together for that game

Good idea. I hadn't thought about the NY club. There's supposed to be a local club in Philly, but the website lists no officers and no one responds to email, so my best guess is that the club is defunct. As a college graduate, I can figure some things out.

So I sent in my ten bucks to join the NYC local club. I saw that they did get together a group to go to the basketball game at Rutgers. I'm hoping football will be on the agenda as well.

Doing a little homework on this season's opponents. I see UNC will have a new QB which should help us. Does anyone know much about their D?

Are you a member of the NYC alumni club?

No but I know the Illini bar in midtown, They should pick a better one. Went to the game against Nova at MSG last year after visiting there. couldn't justify going to NJ to watch Illini basketball this year

I take it you're in Manhattan?

We took the 2.5 hr drive out to Penn State in March, and because the game was at noon, we made a weekend out of it. It was good to see the Orange and Blue, even with all the even ifs. But there were only about two dozen Illini there, by the Orange I saw looking around the arena. The PSU fans were annoyed when I cheered for our guys, but felt smug satisfaction after they won...in double overtime. It would be good to have some backup in the general vicinity. I'm just glad I didn't go out for football.

Unfortunately, looking at the schedule, no PSU/Illinois games at State College for forever, but the Fighting Illini will be heading out for Maryland, so maybe a roadtrip to College Park is coming.

Am I still on topic? Don't want to violate Rule #5 again.

The NYC club always buys a block of tickets, arranges transportation, and tailgates for games at Penn State. I'm 100% certain they will do the same for Rutgers. You should reach out now so they can set aside some tickets.

I had looked at Philly before. I had never thought about NYC.

Alas, no more football at Happy Valley (especially now that we have a chance to make it Less Than Happy Valley).

So Rutgers it shall be. I signed up for the NY Illini Alumni Association this morning.

Basically, yes. Fourteen teams in the conference--13 "other' teams--so with only nine conference games, something's got to give. In this case, it's Penn State.

In a couple of years--2018, I think--Illinois will play Maryland in College Park. My wife got her PhD at Maryland--though she's a true Illini, so we may have to make the trip down there. The Metro NY club will host the Washington DC Illini Club at Rutgers. I would think the DC Illini would exchange the favor.:thumb:

Maryland, Rutgers, all sound like fun but i will never set foot on the god forsaken place called "happy valley". nothing happy about it. i only wish bad things for all involved with Penn State. not even a child can be safe there.

So evidently fightingillini.com and the FBS site both had the home game against MSU scheduled at primetime on ESPN/ABC. It's been taken down now. Gameday wouldn't come here, but this has to be a legit leak right? Someone just messed up and put it on the site too early I'm guessing. I'm getting goosebumps thinking about a primetime game on national tv against an elite team at home. Hopefully it's true.
