I would argue that Groce's biggest problem has been his inability to get or develop any bigs. I still don't believe he has done that yet.

Problem? Yes. Biggest problem? No way. You can win without a C, but it's really tough to win without a PG. Nowadays it's a guards' game.

I read the Tilmon news like this: the common theme in the pitch by the coaches that are visiting him at home is negative recruiting. The only reason they would do this is to dissuade him from the school they know he's leaning. That bodes well for the Illini. Also, I will go all in with the idea that if it hadn't been for his injury he would have already visited C-U officially and made a choice publicly. Blueblood coaches see an opportunity at this point so what looks like bad news for us is probably just a young man not being able to turn down the likes of Izzo, Williams, scheister, I mean Calipari, etc. into his home while he heals. Wiliams, Goodwin, Tilmon, Pickett, Lewis/Smith will be one hell of a good class.

Love my Illini

I'm not sure the 2017 recruiting class enters into Groce's future as much as people keep assuming.

If we're not in the tournament next year, I don't care if we have Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul Jabbar committed, I will have my pitchfork firmly in hand.

A Top 15 2017 class would help his case, but performance not potential is going to determine his fate.

Word is that Jonathon Nicola will be reclassifying to the 2016 class. How badly do we need a big?

One could argue that Maverick Morgan has developed pretty nicely.
Egwu had nice development, as well, and he played mostly under Groce. He became a monster defensively, and his offensive game improved for sure even if it still wasn't the strength of his game.

As an early defector, I'm wondering why you've come to this point, and if you gave Groce a pass for this year. You've probably opined on this before, but I've been away from the board for a while.

Self didn't do Cliff any favors, but one guy isn't going to change his reputation, either.

I wouldn't underestimate the advantages KU type programs have over us. Groce is a great recruiter, but the program is in the dumps. If a rival program had our last 3 seasons, can you imagine what we'd be saying about them?

Darnell Jackson, Sasha Kahn, the Morris twins, Thomas Robinson, Jeff Withey and even our own Robert Archibald were all be lower rated players that developed enough under Self to play in the NBA.

If I was a big man looking to capture the Self magic I'd head to Wake Forest.

Did he really improve offensively? He went from 6.5 PPG on 46% shooting in 25.7 MPG as a soph to 6.9 PPG on 41% shooting in 29.7 MPG as a junior and back down to 6.5 PPG on 43% in 29.8 MPG as a senior. Looks pretty flat to me.

EGWU

As a four year starter the staff did not teach EGWU a single post move. He only had the fade away jumper that he didn't need with his size.

I'm sure they tried drilling a few post moves in him. I just don't think he was confident enough in that area of his game. Really unfortunate, too. I really appreciated his defense and motor, but he was close to useless on the offensive end.

I sometimes got the impression that Egwu studied videotapes of post moves in slow motion. When he recreated those moves on the court, he forgot to turn off the slo-mo....
