Is VCU recruiting him as well? This could mark a new fashion in recruiting.

So barring a last minute grad student addition or bizarre NCAA denial of Abrams' waiver , we likely have the roster known now. Front line looks good with Thorne/Mav/Black/Finke at the 4/5. Hill will get all the minutes he wants at the 3 and could play some 2 if needed. Same for JCL, he'll pick up some of those Nunn minutes and play 30+ at the 2. For reserves and the 2/3 we've got Jordan and DJW. I expect improvement out of both as they're now sophs. Then you have Abrams/Lucas/Tate at the PG. Still pretty solid even without Nunn. And overall, the net of all these results is a positive one, IMO. As discussed elsewhere, the improvement in rebounding and thus defense should be a big one. Still some concerns at the PG of course, with Abrams coming off major injuries and Lucas unproven. But there's enough here to compete and make the NCAAs without question.

VCU will play Illinois in a neutral site game at American Airlines Arena in Miami on December 3. According to Rothstein tweet.

Remember when Groce hated neutral site games?

Kentucky , Ohio State, South Florida, and Memphis played in an event there last year put on by the Basketball Hall of Fame and the Miami Heat. More than likely that's what this game is. Still a little odd.

Neutral court games are huge for schools. This is a no brainer if you're Illinois.

There will be like 100 people at this game and depending on who is counted as the home team, it might not even get picked up by TV. It's a random trip to nowhere to play a tough team that will be favored to beat us. I'm almost too baffled to be upset. Unless there is something I'm missing here this is like the Venus de Milo of terrible scheduling decisions.

Why would they be favored to beat us? It should be close. Also, how is Miami a trip to nowhere? I don't see how this is a bad scheduling decision. It's a tough schedule but unless we have more crucial injuries, this schedule should only help our postseason chances.

OK, goofy question time.

Assuming:
1. No more injuries between now and the start of the season; and
2. Tracy gets a sixth year; and
3. Nunn's scholly does not go to a freshman or grad transfer,

Then we will have ten scholarship players in uniform to start the season. How common/uncommon is it to have all thirteen slots filled by healthy/eligible scholarship players at the same time?

And is there a likelihood that Alex Austin gets the ride if we do not otherwise fill Nunn's slot?

Haven't gone through the rosters in a while, but for a while it was pretty rare to have all 13 in use.

Good chance.

Not expecting much from him. First year player and tough for him to break into the rotation mid season, IMO.

1 Thorne
2 Mav
3 black
4 Finke
5 hill
6 Nichols
7 DJW
8 JCL
9 aj
10 Abrams
11 tate
12 Lucas

Thats 12 unless you're not counting Nichols. And yes, if there's no transfer or last minute freshman addition I would expect Austin to get the scholarship

Yeah, I'm not in favor of just tossing him in there mid season. Unless he is some unreal stud there could be real chemistry and rotation issues throwing another body in there like that. And he gets the on right into the fire. No non con cup cakes to warm up on first. I hope he gets his waiver and gets a shot right from the start.

Nichols won't be eligible yet and Black will be suspended when the season starts.

So is Lucas a first year player. KN has had an entire year with the strength coach and practice time with the team. Not saying I think he's gonna come in and be 6th man of the year, but to leave him out of the conversation is equally silly, especially since we don't yet know if his waiver will be denied (unless I missed that somewhere)

We basically have the same team when KN missed the first 8 Games what was our record again in those games ?

Well that team had no tracy, no lucas, and no tate for a few games with his dislocated finger... so with Khalid Lewis as the only healthy pg... yeah, those games didn't go well

Well, we did beat Chicago State, 82-79.

If we had JCL at 100% and two better point guards, I'm sure our record would have been much better in that stretch. Add in any improvements from the other freshmen, and it's probably not an accurate guess on how our upcoming season will start.

Feel free to file this under "too soon": but i wonder if someone else will wear 25 next season (JT or DJW)?

It may or may not happen. It has not always been the case that a Simeon player at Illinois has to wear number 25, even if he is the only player representing Simeon on the roster.
