My top 3 all-time impact commitments (at the time of commitment):

1. Sergio and Marcus
2. Marcus Liberty
3. Jeremy Richmond

This is not necessarily the best players, or highest ranked, or best careers. But ranked based on impact at the time of commitment.

I'd put Tilmon in the Top 3 just based on the level of recruit and the implication of the impact of said recruit compared to where the program stood at the time. When Liberty committed, Illinois was already cemented near the top echelon of programs and was coming off some pretty good recent success. He just helped push the program to the highest level. Sergio and Griffin came at a time when the program had been in a lull, so they belong there. Same with Richmond. Richmond proved that Bruce COULD recruit and bring in a top player in the State of Illinois, and got the ball rolling with the next couple classes even if he didn't ultimately pan out. I think Tilmon does the same, and provides an even bigger boost because he fills a position of critical need, and gives the Illini a kind of player they haven't had in a LONG time. I think he also really gets the ball rolling and helps us land a stellar 2017 class (and then maybe 2018).

My order would be:

1. Tilmon
2. Richmond
3. Serge/Griffin
v
v
4. Liberty
5. Harper
6. Dee
7. Deon Thomas
8. Meyers

And whoever said this would be Groce's 2nd recruit from Indiana is wrong...

"I feel that I trust them and that's where my heart is telling me to be," Tilmon said. "I feel that they believe in me and will do everything in their power to get me where I want to be. I have a great relationship with the coaches and Illinois is my home. East St. Louis is my hometown, I can't forget where I came from."

Illinois is my home. Love reading this.

Huge get....opened up Chicago. I would throw Eddie Johnson on the list too.

Bingo on Levi Cobb and then getting Eddie Johnson. Both of them were program-building recruits - Levi from a perception standpoint and Eddie from both perception and performance. Eddie would certainly be a 5 star / McDAA recruit today.

Perhaps a better way to look at impact commitments - by coaching era:

- Henson: Levi Cobb (opened up Chicago)

- Kruger: Sergio (although I think Combes has mentioned that Grif drove their commitments because he didn't want to play for Knight)

- Self: Dee

- Weber: none (the program declined so there was no impact commitment)

Depends on the ranking, on the RSCI composite Richmond ended up #24, higher than Leornard (#29). In addition to Mr. Basketball (2010), he was twice named Sun Times Player of the Year (2009, 2010), and also got McD AA honors. Richmond was a prodigy, and gave life to a program on a fast decline at a time of desperation (after the Eric Gordon fiasco). Getting Richmond did help perception of Illinois and did help land a fantastic 2009 class (Richmond committed first), followed by a great 2010 class. After Richmond beat Paul with a last second desperation 3 in Paul's last year, Paul went and personally congratulated Richmond and publicly said he could not wait to play with him. Obviously, their relationship went downhill once Richmond got to Illinois, but not before.

Richmond ended up his own worst enemy, and obviously his career was short lived with much trouble. So public opinion will always be influenced by that and Tilmon will most likely have a better career. But at the time of commitment? I'd rank Richmond higher.

Funny little Richmond story I'll share with the class. I grew up with Toni Kukoc's son who had a brief stint playing ball at Penn. He and I were watching his national teammate and dear family friend Duje Dukan(Wisconsin, Sacramento Kings) square off against Waukegan in the CSL title game in 09. Needless to say, there was a lot of talent on the floor. Game was nuts, went to double OT. After the loss, Richmond was dropping F-bombs all over the place. Cursing up a storm to the ref, barking at Deerfield's staff, barking at parents, you name it. Richmond was shooting Toni dirty looks all game. It was sort of creepy.

Anyhoo, the summer before my freshman year I was stoked about Richmond being a classmate and future of the program. Tony overheard me chattin up some friends about Richmond at his son's game. He interrupts me and my friends mid conversation, because when Toni Kukoc speaks you look up and listen, and he shared some hilarious knowledge. "Richmond is going to wash up." Of course, we didn't believe it for a second...On another note, Dukan being on the Kings these days sparks a lot of juicy gossip in the north shore. Dukan's father, Toni & Vlade Divac all played on that Yugoslavian national team together. Dukan scouted Tony hard to the Bulls and Duje is on the Kings. Illuminati

Richmond absolutely was a program changing recruit WHEN he committed. He was like #8 in the country and a freshman. His stock dropped over time and we know the rest. But he turned around the recruiting momentum when he said "yes."

With hindsight, this list is very true. There isn't one Weber recruit that you can point to and call it a major program changer due to the lack of results and longevity.

To be honest, I don't think that we can rate Tilmon right now compared to Levi, Dee, & Co. He could very well be the savior and the path to redemption for Groce and Co., but recruiting success and longevity/reality are way different.

Plus, we need to wait and see who follows JT. Go get em kiddo!

Realistically what could one expect from Tilmon as a freshmen?
10 points
5 rebounds
2 assists
1 block

Would that be crazy or on the low end?

Hard to leave Frankie Williams off the list, unless you are saying that Serge/Griff were more responsible for landing him.

I'm expecting something like 10 pts, 7 rebounds, 1.3 blocks, negligible assists (0.5 - 1)

12 Points per Game
5 Boards
4 Assists
2 Blocks
4 Fouls Per Game

Tilmon is more offensive minded at this time no one can stop him at the High School Level.

The Defensive side and Strength are areas that Illini coaching staff and training staff will focus on in the future development of this great player.

I would put his numbers a bit higher if Foul Trouble is eliminated from the equation.

We finally get the 5 star player that really never doubted coming here. It feels good to be the dream destination for Tilmon. What a great recruiting job by Groce and the staff to stay with it.
