I think it would definitely hurt Mizzou's chances and help SLU's. The question is, was SLU already favored over Mizzou? If so, it could be concerning for ILL.

Goodwin's going to pick SLU over the beloved? Don't think so.

I'd really prefer us not to fill our last scholarship with anything other than a 5th year big. I want Goodwin and Frazier to round this class out. Only exception for me to add another would be if Scruggs makes it to us or we can get a true highly touted PF. Class balance is not something we have been very good at these last 4 years.

Get a top 5 class this year, have a solid season, then sign a highly touted 5 star for our only slot in '18 and keep the recruiting mo going.

I'm sure others may disagree. Just my 2 cents.

That's crazy. If we can get Kiir, Theo John, Epperson, Derek Culver (loooong shot) or any other quality PF/C type, you absolutely take them and thank your lucky stars.

A bird in the hand is much more important than class balance.

Never said that, I think he comes to ILL. Just thought it was worth noting that SLU has bolstered their pitch to him.

That's true, but I don't think their pitch was very strong to begin with. Would have to think this move pretty much eliminates Mizzou. If it is us vs NW and SLU, god help us if we lose.

Possibly. Consider me worried. Wouldn't be surprised if this put the Bilikins on pretty equal footing with us.

Agreed. It's not like Travis Ford won't pull out any stop necessary. And NW is still coming at him as strong as we are. People who are making projections as if he's already in O&B should tamp the brakes a tad.

For a kid who apparently wanted exposure and offers from some big-time programs, why would he settle for SLU? And it would be settling based on his offer list.

Tate is his AAU coach.

Tate WAS his AAU coach.

If you're Goodwin, you listen to what your former coach has to say, but at the end of the day, as he said, he's going to make a selfish decision. If he sticks to his criteria of best chance to win while also getting some playing time, you'd think Illinois. Plus, he could play with his friends as an added bonus.

Regarding Scruggs, I didn't think about the timelines between he and Frazier. By all means give me the first player who wants to commit, but it sounds like Scruggs may move along pretty fast with his decision and could be ready to make a decision before Frazier steps foot on campus. As others said, if we're getting an official, there's a chance.

If Scruggs picks Xavier, they're going to make Bill Murray happy for a while.

Chris Mack continues to add firepower to his perimeter. Naji Marshall ranked No. 51 overall. Tough, competitive & aggressive player.

Xavier adds more scorers to their perimeter. Elias Harden joins shooter Jared Ridder in their 2017 class. Both can fill it up.

How would we get a Top 5 class?????

Even if we get Goodwin- we would only have two players that will be RSCI Top 100. The other three will all be in the 100-150 range.

We get Goodwin AND Scruggs, then that starts to make some sense.
With Goodwin we might be Top 10-12 class.

If the majority of the players' rankings stay pretty much the same and then you factor in a bump of 20-30 spots for T. Frazier in the composite rankings, a class of Tilmon, Goodwin, Da'Monte, Pickett, Frazier, and any of Kiir/John/Uyaelunmo/Epperson should end up around 10th in the country (9-12 range). To get in the top 5, you'd have to sub Scruggs for Frazier and then add a long shot MCDAA like Bowen or Wilkes. Even Scruggs + Culver would probably equal #6 or #7.

Agree.
A class with Tilmon and Goodiwn and three Top 100-150-ish type players is excellent. Will be great for us and we will become competitive again as they are added to the present group.
It is just a start, though, to fixing the talent gap we have.

Would be a huge step forward I agree, but considering the how talent rich the midwest is this year it's a make or break class for us IMO. Not so much for more highly regarded programs, but for us right now we need to take advantage of the current glut of talent density.

Have we even offered Derek Culver?? I didn't think we had?!

+1 - Folks...we've been here before. Let's be cautiously optimistic, but as Mike the Elevator said "tamp the brakes a tad." Still a long way to go on Mr. Goodwin.

Question for everyone. Is Scruggs incrementally more talented than Frazier?? I know he is rated much higher by all services; however, everything I read about Frazier is that he is performing off the charts. Trending big time and looks as if he will easily crack the Top 100 when it is all said and done.

I have not seen either play in person and I know you can't put too much stock in highlight videos, but man, I would be soooo happy with Frazier. Commit today and I think I could say thanks but no thanks to Scruggs unless someone tells me otherwise.

Southport guard Paul Scruggs is focusing in on five schools and has set dates for official and unofficial visits to all five.

The 6-foot-4 Scruggs, ranked No. 31 nationally on the 247sports composite rankings, will take an unofficial visit to Indiana early next week (either Monday or Tuesday), followed by an official visit to Xavier from Aug. 5-7. He also is planning official visits to Michigan State (Aug. 12-14), UConn (Aug. 26-28) and Illinois (Sept. 2-4).

Scruggs’ travel coach with the Indy Hoosiers, Mike Peterson, said those five programs pursued him the hardest in July and have a good plan for him.

“Now we will visit and get clear on the best situation for him,” Peterson said.

Scruggs averaged 19.0 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.4 assists last season to help Southport to a Class 4A semistate appearance for the first time since 1990.

Scruggs is more of a sure thing. He's stood out against elite competition whereas Frazier hasn't played in many top events. Scruggs also has ideal size at 6'4 with a mature frame. Frazier is about 6'1 and skinny. Both are very good athletes. Scruggs probably compares to a less explosive Russell Westbrook and has definite NBA potential. The disparity is based on projectability. Frazier is intriguing, though, and I'd love to get him.
