I'm sensing (in interviews) that Lovie's confidence in this team is growing. It's rubbing off on me.

I mean, Martin himself posted it on Twitter... I would say that's pretty good confirmation.

I am excited to see what Lovie and company bring to this team. I think coaching staff alone can account for an extra 1-2 wins this season and there is enough talent on both sides of the football to compete for a bowl bid. I haven't been this excited about Illinois football in a while, probably not since the days that I was at school w/Zook at the helm.

I hope this game is a comfortable blowout, our backups on offense could really use the game time.

Trouble is, while Murray is a mediocre at best FCS team, they do have the one thing that can make rolling over an inferior opponent tricky - a high quality, experienced QB in a pass-first offense.

The common denominator in our cupcake laughers of recent years has been opposing QB play that just didn't give the teams a chance.

News to me.

I guess they haven't decided on a starting TE, either?

Also, Taylor Barton at FS was a surprise to me.

On another note: I feel pretty darn good about our D-Line!

Same here. Not sure how I'm going to feel about it next year though--we lose every starter.

I love Lovie. Main reason: we have FB listed on depth chart. Yes I'm old school. But this is awesome. Haha

Probably a stupid question but any reason why one CB position has one back up and the other has 3? Why not 2 and 2?

Lovie Smith press conference

https://twitter.com/mdaniels_NG

Illinois has selected four captains already, but Lovie hasn't told them yet

Lovie: Can't wait to play this week and try to get some momentum started

Lovie: We want to put a good product on the field from the start. Not a grace period or anything like that

Lovie: Between Week 1 and Week 2 is when you see the most improvement, but for us, we've hit every situation as much as as we can

Lovie: Pretty good shape health-wise after end of training camp

Lovie: One part about college football I really like is you don't have to go over any injuries. We don't have anything serious going on

Lovie: Having Wes Lunt has made it an easier transition

Lovie: Lunt and Garrick McGee have really hit it off well

Lovie: I lay out a map of the week on what we're going to do every step of the week

Lovie: Today is a day off for our players. They're students today. Tomorrow, we'll really get back to working on our opponent

Lovie: Will tell players tomorrow in meetings who the four captains are

Lovie makes first, 'Wes Lunt is our quarterback,' today

Lovie: Hardy Nickerson (the linebacker) has been everything you've wanted coming in

Lovie: Season-long captains

That's a change in the past, where captains were voted on a week to week basis

Lovie: First time I'll walk in a stadium and there's a band playing. There's a lot of excitement to put it mildly

Lovie: Julian Hylton is as fast as anyone on the team and can jump as high as anyone on the team

Lovie: Right now we know who's starting at every position

Lovie: Once it gets to game week, nobody's competing for a job

Lovie: Any true freshman that we feel can help us win games will play

Lovie: There might be a couple freshmen that fit that role

Thanks for the info, Dan. Gotta say, I am really excited this year. Looking forward to laying down a foundation. I just got done watching the first game I ever saw in person (Illinois 23; Colorado 22, 1990). What I wouldn't give to have that sense of excitement around the program again!

Does anyone know if the PC is available anywhere online? Looked and couldn't find it.

Also, I have to point out something Lovie said about staying healthy. With depth issues on the O-line, that is going to be crucial. 2 bad injuries and we are screwed. Hopefully Lovie's less-frenetic pace in practices (something many observers have pointed out) will help keep our kids healthy.

Hey, look! A PC where our head coach doesn't embarrass us!

Seniors

We have 16 senior starters on the depth chart. That counts for a lot. Counts for basketball too, a starting lineup of seniors beats a lineup of underclassmen every time. I loved the comment in the practice videos where the player said into the camera, "We're coming right at you!" Illinois will be the team no one wants to play. Now if the student body will just show up. The alums and the Marching Illini will be there.
