And I think most people would rate our overall recruiting fairly poorly in that span.

We had complaints about positional balance but not many on about overall talent. The 2013-15 classes were really solid while the 2016 class got us a 4 star pg and Kipper.

Kiir won't commit before going to VCU unless the whole "early playing time" line was a ploy by his camp. VCU offers the best chance for that and will be major players for him.

Recruiting is fluid.

He would play just as early here. Would he start odds are against it but he would get easy 10-20 mins if not more

Eh? This discussion started with how Crean had been recruiting in state, he's been around longer than 5 years so not sure why you're arbitrarily setting time frames.

Irrelevant to the topic.

Oh, THAT was your point?
1. My point was that 5 years is an awfully long time in college basketball. Programs can completely change (both good and bad) in that span, and thus, in my opinion, any recruiting victories from 5+ years ago don't really hold any sway.

2. I agree it is mostly irrelevant, but when it happens consistently, I don't think accusing Painter of being a recruiting snake oil salesman is that far of a leap. He potentially only got several guys on campus due to false promises.

3. Yes, the Swanigan part is built off of my original post in this discussion. If you subtract Swanigan (a player they very nearly missed on), their last two recruiting classes (2015,2016) look downright awful. They've gotten Ryan Cline and Carsen Edwards (I'm not counting Weatherford, since he redshirted and transferred already).

Kiir, There will be playing time his freshmen year. We will have Black, Tillmon, Finke as our bigs. You can possibly add DJ as another big.

If we don't get two from Kiir, Epperson, Wilkes, Kijab spring is going to be interesting. Possibly a 5th year big to deepen our PF/C position.

I think it's more likely that Kipper would fill a PF slot than DJW.

I don't think we have as clear of a path to playing time as VCU; I never quite trust Verbal Commits, but I like the format of their scholarship grid...but if you take this at face value, VCU would have 2 senior 4s & 2 freshman 4s that he is higher ranked than... so conceivably he is probably 1st big off the bench in 2017 or at least has a fair fight to earn that position & even then the one of the Srs. is a 2 star that may or may not be any good...In 2018 they are down to 3 bigs all in Kiir's class. For us we have 2 Junior 4s & Tilmon in 2017, so he probably pencils in as the 4th big in playing time, nothing changes in 2018. He may get 10 minutes, the 20 minutes or more seems like a stretch. (We may both also eat some of the big minutes with another wing/stretch 4 as well, but that is a level deeper than I'm willing to dig).

Another way to look at minutes is Leonard played 8.2 mpg & Egwu played 9.8 mpg as freshman, both were higher ranked, however both also were also behind a more experienced center as opposed to another freshman...so I'm guessing 10 if he is at all ready, if not Finke or Black spend more minutes at the 5.

well im just looking at it as we have 80 mins between the 4 and 5 and as of right now we have 3 players for those 80 mins. with fouls and all the things that happen 10 mins seems almost a given. mins at the 5 would be Tilmon Finke Kiir mins at the 4 Black Finke Kiir who knows really what the coaches are telling him but if we can add him I like our front court for the next 2 years

I think we are splitting hairs regarding playing time, all schools are trying to fill a need at the PF position for a reason. Freshmen year there might be a small advantage at one place over another, but by year 2 it becomes more open.

Kipper is thicker than DJ, but DJ has played the 4 already as a freshmen. At times DJ has acquitted himself well at the position in fact. Whereas Kipper is more a 2/3, Groce has mentioned possibly playing him a a SG. It goes beyond physical measurables, Kipper skills would best utilized at the SG/WF position.

Kipper is definitely going to need to be versatile to get time in the rotation but I'll be shocked if Kipper plays the 2. By the time he starts playing, JCL will be back playing heavy minutes, maybe even close to 30 mpg. Same with Hill at the 3. Despite Black and Finke at the 4, there are still question marks with that position and is the most likely spot for him to earn minutes IMO. If Black and Finke show promise, as most are expecting, earning minutes will be tough there as well. DJW and Kipper will be battling for the same minutes, while Jordan, and maybe Austin (people hate to hear this but watch, he'll be able to provide a solid 5 mpg if needed) will be battling for the few minutes left at the 2.

It might be more likely that Hill plays some at the 2 if Jordan doesn't meet expectations. That would make more minutes available at the 3 for Kipper and DJW.
