And Charles Barkley is probably shorter than Leron. Having hops helps, but you just gotta want it.

Barkley was 6'6" and Rodman was 6'7". Height isn't a determining factor in rebounding ability, it's attitude, and I look forward to having that attitude in the O&B.

You don't get the nickname Savage by playing soft, especially in the B1G.

I'd still like to see if he can be savage without getting 4 fouls in ten minutes.

He's got a reputation, and I guarantee the stripes haven't forgotten it.

He was a freshman that averaged less than 15 mpg the last time he did anything memorable on the court. Can you name another freshman on another team from two years ago that played a little dirty? His reputation will linger if he shows that side again but I don't think the sample size was big enough to influence the refs.

It did last season.

But your point stands. Maybe they'll have forgotten.

Barkley is 6'4, not 6'6. He's admitted as much

Anyone see the new "freedom of movement" rules for this season. Black might have some foul issues if the refs hold true to the new rebounding ones.

Here's a great video if you want to understand the rules. Some fairly serious changes IMO.

Hard to know how much of this will actually be implemented. Even the examples show refs blowing calls under the old rules!

I don't expect Black will have more issues than other bigs. Verticality is important for bigs, but it will really depend on how things are called. I think certain defenders and teams are used to crowding, and that will be hard to break. Also, there are guys who habitually travel, and if they really do enforce the rule as they claim, it's going to require a lot of adjustment. Bigs should be used to the restricted arc --it's just going to be a bit bigger.

Lotta stuff changing this year.

Man the verticality from the floor being a foul but not from the air is tough. One of the most important rules on defense for a long time has been don't leave your feet.

I do like the little back nudge from the rebounder being a foul. That only has a place in old man rec league ball where the game is played below the net. Elite D1 athletes should be able to do better. I did find it interesting though, what if the player boxing out isn't strong enough to hold off the guy behind him? Calling a foul on the guy behind is a tough loss just for being stronger.

I watched the video.

I realize they all but say as much several times in the video (reduce physicality of play to encourage freedom of motion), but they're dialing back the ability of post players to be post players.

Makes me kinda uneasy.

They'll be plenty of bad calls this season, that's certain.

The crowding rules are overdue IMO. The low/hi distinction on space to make a play will take me a while to get used to, and probably drive me nuts when they blow the call.

One problem that always happens and particularly with these new rules is the inconsistency in how they are enforced. Usually it's called significantly more often early in the season and then the refs revert back to allowing more contact once conference play starts. The talking heads may claim, "the players have adjusted" but that's not often the case, IMO. And there's also the case where different conferences/crews call them differently as there's no centralized control over officials.

I think you might be surprised at how quickly bigs adjust to the verticality issue. As a coach I'm sure you know how difficult it can be at times to teach someone to not leave their feet under the basket when the offensive player elevates. The natural instinct is to elevate as well. Changing the rule to allow the defender to elevate as long as he stays vertical and keeps his arms up enable them to play to their natural instincts. After all, isn't it kind of silly to allow one player to jump but not another? :D

I try teach my guys to take charges unless they are the super athletic 6'5 kid I had a couple years ago who blocked 7 shots a game and came dangerously close to quadruple doubles on multiple occasions.

But in all seriousness, teaching a kid to stay on the floor while contesting the shot is an all over the floor principle. Don't jump at shooters, drivers etc. Now there is one place they HAVE to jump.

Big Ten preview:

8. Illinois: Illinois is hoping to stay healthy and make a run that could save head coach John Groce’s job. Point guard Tracy Abrams gives leadership while Malcolm Hill gets help from guard Jalen Coleman-Lands and center Mike Thorne Jr.

Preseason accolades, however meaningless, are still nice to see. We're all expecting a huge year out of Malcolm. Maybe I'm drunk on Kool-Aid, but I am seriously wondering if Malcolm enters into NPOY talks at any point during the season. I'm not saying I expect him to win it, but I'm beyond hyped to see him this year. We've all seen the recent pictures of him. He's a senior who has made massive improvements to his athleticism at this point in his career. He was already the best player on an absolutely depleted team. He will return as the best player on a more than competent surrounding cast (insert the assumed "if healthy" here).

Since we're about month away, I'm starting to go all in on the preseason hype. Thorne will impact the game in a major way, even if he only plays brief spurts of minutes. If Tracy can give us a percentage of his junior self, it will still be an upgrade. Malcolm can play the 3!!! To have a weapon like JCL from beyond the arc is invaluable. I was ecstatic to get Leron as a recruit, and I think this is the year he starts living up to his potential. He will give us everything we were missing last year. And the bench? Maverick will be one of the better back up 5s in the league. Finke has a cool new haircut that combes seems to love, and has a year of heavy experience (and Fletch) behind him. I'm cautiously optimistic about Nichols based on what I've read on this board. And we have a whole host of freshmen becoming sophomores.

The talks about Groce being on the hot seat will be laughable 6 months from now. This team is going to ball the hell out.

The last few years have left me jumpy. I log on and see Hills name on the front page, but no story. My mind was freaking out thinking it was an injury.
