So now the tally from this board's discussions, is that Nickerson, Ligashesky, Williams, and McGonigal are gone. The first season isn't even done yet.
Too early to say on Nickerson. Just a thought to have out there.
I never thought for a second, at any point, that Williams and McGarigle would be here in 2017. Those two were just the available placeholders for when the carousel opened again, and the fact that our defensive back 7 has been a disaster makes it that much easier.
To believe that those two are really core to the plan is to believe that Bill Cubit, with no money and no credibility at the helm of a dumpster fire, hired two assistants at key defensive spots who represented the very best Lovie Smith would want and be able to hire with double the budget, despite neither having any connection to him at all. As opposed to the obvious explanation of coaches Lovie wanted not being available in March and the decision being made to keep their power dry this season and make the move in December.
As for Ligashesky, having an NFL special teams coach fill one of the assistant spots and do just that was an interesting experiment. But keep in mind, he wasn't a very good NFL special teams coach, our special teams are awful, and he's a non-recruiter. Not gonna work.
We need 2-3 more experienced, quality Power Five recruiters on this staff. It's clear that that aspect was undershot initially. Those spots have to come from somewhere, and the choices look pretty obvious.
This isn't panic mode. This is build mode.
