Minnesota 40, Illinois 17 POSTGAME

3 penalties for 33 yards.

That is actually massive improvement. Good on the coaches and players.

Can't have the turnovers. Total difference without them.

Feel bad for Wes Lunt. This has to suck for him.

As for the qb position it seems like Minnesotas qb has been around forever. But I'm still not impressed w the qbs in our league. There are some pretty good lines.... .

Dline gets sucked into delays and counters constantly With 3 potential nfl players? I don't know if it's a new coaching staff and system so they are slow to figure it out or if we are just bad?

There's a third option no one seems to want to consider. The defensive coordinator hasn't really ever coordinated a defense before, has he?

Agreed. At some point it does... about 2-3 years from now.

Respectfully disagree with your timeframe but I'll try to keep quiet knowing that I should not expect anyone besides Turner to be able to run a pass route for 2-3 years. Gonna be a rough 2-3 years.

Zach Grant. He's the new Dudek. I'd throw to him every down. I had hopes for no. 4 but he has not had a good season.

Presumably the head coach is at least helping him do that job though. He's learning by watching one of the best is he not?

I thought we played our assignments somewhat better yesterday than we had in previous games, but this is a very legitimate question at this point.

Hardy Nickerson wasn't "qualified" for this job, point blank. He is a big name in the game of football, a great person, and someone who Lovie really believes in as a coach, and I am willing to give a lot of trust to that due to the coaching infrastructure built around him (which will hopefully continue to improve).

But you're lying to yourself if you ignore the possibility that in two years the conclusion is gonna be "Hardy just wasn't cut out for big-time coaching". Most people aren't.

I genuinely hope it works out, but it wouldn't shock me if a change was made at that spot, and if that's going to happen, better sooner than later.

So now the tally from this board's discussions, is that Nickerson, Ligashesky, Williams, and McGonigal are gone. The first season isn't even done yet.

Even though we don't like it, the first season is a mulligan season for coach hires. Lovie had to pry people away from jobs long after the carousel stopped spinning last March/April.

We can hire amazing assistants with our salary pool. However, even money can't pry some folks away from a job they just took, a contract they extended, a sense of loyalty to a school that they don't want to leave in the lurch, or even just kids smack dab in the middle of second semester of grade/high school.

We should see some staff turnover after the NW game and, hopefully, at that point we will be more impressed with the names we will hear.

Too early to say on Nickerson. Just a thought to have out there.

I never thought for a second, at any point, that Williams and McGarigle would be here in 2017. Those two were just the available placeholders for when the carousel opened again, and the fact that our defensive back 7 has been a disaster makes it that much easier.

To believe that those two are really core to the plan is to believe that Bill Cubit, with no money and no credibility at the helm of a dumpster fire, hired two assistants at key defensive spots who represented the very best Lovie Smith would want and be able to hire with double the budget, despite neither having any connection to him at all. As opposed to the obvious explanation of coaches Lovie wanted not being available in March and the decision being made to keep their power dry this season and make the move in December.

As for Ligashesky, having an NFL special teams coach fill one of the assistant spots and do just that was an interesting experiment. But keep in mind, he wasn't a very good NFL special teams coach, our special teams are awful, and he's a non-recruiter. Not gonna work.

We need 2-3 more experienced, quality Power Five recruiters on this staff. It's clear that that aspect was undershot initially. Those spots have to come from somewhere, and the choices look pretty obvious.

This isn't panic mode. This is build mode.

I have a feeling we'll wind up with a pretty solid 2017 class. Everything I read says Lovie is the best recruiter on staff & has done well sealing the deal thus far. The man has been available to recruit off-campus for 1 week so far.

As more guys get pulled in for OVs, Lovie and Garrick hit the road full-time and the coaching carousel inevitably loosens some commitments, this thing will fill out.

I'm with S&C. McGarigle and Williams were never in the long term coaching plans. To be honest, I'm not sure Butkus was either.

Some guys committed now probably won't stick, but I'm guessing Lovie and Co. will be in on (and land) some nice prospects on signing day.

Keep getting better every week. Keep playing the young guys. It'll get there.

Generally agree with all this. I do have to give props to Williams for identifying and promoting Nelson and Green, our freshmen safeties. They've made their share of mistakes but they seem to be involved in the majority of the action.

Personally, I've been down on the receivers which is Hayes-Stoker. But the reality is that we've had several key injuries, a very unstable QB situation and a serious shortage of talent. Looking at Hayes-Stoker's bio, he looks like a very well qualified coach and we're probably lucky to have him. I'll try to quit complaining about this area and just try to be patient. This is all going to take some time.

Couldn't make it to the game. I know we got hammered but more importantly, how did the unis look?

I watched on the tube. I don't see the fascination with the grey uni's. Faded grey uniforms with a graphite helmet (looked like black automotive primer on TV) and silver/chrome :illinois:'s just looked horrible.

I agree that the auntie didn't look good on tv. The matte blue looked black or dark dark grey. We need to add matte orange to that grey ghost look.

Your Aunt plays for the Illini!?!?! Sweet!:thumb:

Walk-on backup long snapper. :thumb:

Also, how in the world did my autocorrect change "Unis" to "Auntie"? I've never used the word "Auntie" in my life. (until now of course)
