If a coach wants to become successful at Illinois, he needs to be an excellent recruiter, and be able to recruit against the best of them. If he can't, we'll be looking for excuses until the end of time.

If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. This is recruiting, this is how the game is played. JMO.

Somehow we have to get in the sweet spot which has given Wisconsin and MSU success. I believe those programs to play within the norms of college recruiting. SLU IMHO is heading the way of Memphis, Fresno, etc..

Groce is not naive, he knows how the game is played. Every time we lose a recruit (and I do not believe that we have lost JT yet), people come out of the woodwork with statements presenting as as Mother Teresa whereas every other school cheats, etc. Recruiting is tough, recruiters push the envelope, but it is not that every recruitment involves a bag of cash.

Groce needs to recruit at a higher level than what he has been recruiting so far, with fewer positional gaps. If he can get players recruiting against the best of them, he will be successful. Otherwise, there has been nothing in his tenure at UI so far that makes me think that we have the next Izzo or Bo Ryan in our hands.

I swear some people really don't need Twitter. Pickett says to shh and people go on and comment about money and SLU. It's an absolute joke and don't get why people can't just let the kids make their choices.

Among this chaos regarding the "big fish"......

Those who committed to Illinois AND jumped at the first opportunity to affirm that commitment should be commended.

Congratulations to Javon, DaMonte, and Trent. Proud to have those young men on board!

I have a feeling Pickett is going to have far more of an impact on this program than many now are expecting. Welcome aboard, Javon!!

Unfortunately it represents game threads and the national news, too. There are more pages after a loss than after a win. The news wants to tell us what's wrong with the world and not what some are doing right.

How could it possibly be good?...hes not signing for a reason...so there it is..we continue to recruit like some MAC team....either compete or not...there is no integrity in college basketball recruiting...UI getting paid millions from BTN and other broadcast media....by what metric would you think players from disadvantaged backgrounds would not wonder why they are on the outside?.......and blue bloods have been getting away with it for so long that no one even cares, especially Dickie V and the stooges who worship their "tradition"....tape a $1000 bill to my forehead and Im taking the Prom Queen home..after a couple of proms I have a tradition too

Name on of our recruits that have signed are mac level. Nothing like being alittle over dramatic right about now. I guarantee that none of these players are even close to MAC level talent. And since they signed with Illinois I know your not saying Mac Irvine

That is really the shame here. The JT news has taken precedence over the other three loyal kids that signed with the beloved. People focus on the bad, not the good. I love all three of the signed Illini! :thumb:

Yesterday on the Tay and Jay show Jeremy Werner and Derek Piper made it clear they believe we're going to lose him to SLU. Just listen to the podcasts.

I am curious to see what JFG has to say at his press conference

Don't expect much. He can only talk about signed players, so he will focus on the 3 players who signed their LOI. He can't talk about Tilmon, and if asked about additional recruits, he will probably give a general answer that we are always recruiting, if the opportunity presents itself we may sign additional recruits, etc., etc. He won't/can't discuss Tilmon or other non-signed recruits.

So if JTilmon doesn't come here is it going to be because of a qualifying issue or something else?

Given academic privacy issues, unless a recruit or family make a public statement, there is absolutely no way, or fair to the recruit, to know/discuss the academic status of a recruit with the admissions office.

But signing an LOI does not require a recruit to have qualified or have resolved academic issues. There have been many recruits with academic issues who had signed LOIs, some of them were able to overcome academic hurdles, some not. But there is no prerequisite on qualifying for signing an LOI.

I always assumed that it was understood rule that coaches would not continue to actively go after recruits that had given a verbal to a different school. It would be nice if ALL coaches would do that... Once a snake, always a snake. :tsk::tsk::tsk:

And yes, I know that coaches need to continue to recruit players even after they give their verbal until that LOI is faxed in. I'm sure Groce wasn't ignoring JT the last few months.

Rant over.

Besides that, I am really excited to welcome Damonte, Trent, and Javon into the fold. Congrats on joining the Illini family!!! I believe all 3 are program-changing recruits, and I'm glad they made the choice to attend the U of I.
