Dream Scenario:

Archie Miller
Gregg Marshall
Randy Bennett
Rick Byrd

Would be happy with

Frank Martin
Bob McKillop
Ben Jacobson
Roger Powell
Tommy Amaker

Could live with
Roger Powell
Stew Morill
Greg Kampe

Rick Byrd is a good guy and credit to him for sustaining Belmont with his style of 3-pointers and bad defense.

So the standard for the next head coach is can't be any worse than Groce? Your opinion is your opinion but mine would be to set the bar way higher. Guessing Whitman's bar will be much higher too.

One thing is for sure. At least Whitman isn't married to the former College Assistant/Mid-Major success model that Mike Thomas rigidly used to bring us Beckman and Groce

Never said can't be any worse than Groce. I really think highly of him. I just said the way are team is playing right now it can't be any worse. You can set a bar as high as you want I'm just saying I don't believe we are getting a big name coach to come to Illinois anytime soon no matter who the AD is. I'm saying we need to go after an Illinois guy or a successful mid major coach

Mid-major coaches with outstanding pedigrees are very well known among those who pay attention to the coaching market. Stick around this thread, it'll be a fun time.

+1 thank you. A successful mid major coach like a Gregg Marshall would be a great hire in my opinion.

Gregg Marshall is not an unknown! He is a big time coach who I would consider a homerun hire. As I said earlier, give Marshall a blank check and take care of his buyout.

I said no more QUESTIONABLE mid/low major coaches. No one in their right mind would consider Marshall questionable. Now a guy from Ohio U who had one decent season, that's questionable.

I've been one of the biggest Geoce supporters there is. But from what I'm seeing so far, if he don't write this ship and turn us into a typical MSU season(losing early and really coming together late) he's gone. In that instance, do what needs to be done to keep our recruits in the fold. Cuonzo Martin looks better and better for us in such an instance.

Yeah, we will definitely do better than Groce.

I really did warm up to Groce after he got here and I still think he's a wonderful representative of the program and the University, so there's no saying "I told you so" on my part, but there was no denying at the time of his hiring that his resume was very unimpressive for someone getting a job of this stature.

Two things you want to avoid:

1. A guy who's only in the picture because of an in the moment NCAA tournament run

2. Someone with "recruiting potential" who hasn't proven they can be a difference making coach.

Groce was a big 2-for-2 on those red flags.

I like John Groce. But lets face it, he is little more than high energy with subpar coaching abilities. 29-43 B1G record and no NCAA tournament appearance 3 years and counting?!! If he makes the tournament this year then I'll sing a different tune, if not then he needs to go.

I love JG as a person. He's as passionate about this program as anyone you'll ever meet and a fantastic representative of it. That said, it's become clear that he's in over his head here unfortunately.

I was never a JFG guy. I wasn't rooting against him, but I needed him to show me something before I bought in. It seems like too many people fell in love with him simply because he wasn't BW. Unfortunately, it allowed many to overlook something that's been obvious since the beginning. He's in over his head.

Is Cuonzo Martin a Keady disciple? If so, we've been down this road before with Weber.

He is a Keady disciple but that is the only similarity between him and BAM.

Well, that similarity includes the commitment to playing dreadful, ugly basketball. There's no sugarcoating that with Cuonzo. You can win that way, but you won't be aesthetically pleasing while doing it.

I think Groce is a fantastic person and was really hoping he could win here. But since it seems that will not happen......

I have a feeling Whitman will not even have the hard talk with Groce until he is 99% sure he can land one of the names on his short list.

I have no doubt that Groce will land a nice mid-major job, or maybe the next Big 12 spot to open up. ;)

And as far as some of these names go, they just legalized here in Nevada, but isn't it still illegal in Illinois?
