and so it goes being an Illini fan of our two revenue sports..........we spend more time talking about hiring a new coach than we do talking about our team

history repeating itself every 3-5 years in both sports on a fairly regular basis.

Groce's first two seasons and now Lovie's first season are the only ones since the Rose Bowl where a big chunk of the year wasn't spent discussing firing the coach and hiring a new one. It's unbelievable how often we've found ourselves in this situation.

(Just how unbelievable coming tomorrow ;))

when you live in the area I do, you find that you end up living among lots of other B1G alums, ND guys, and even lots of other Power 5 people from various schools. I am so sick and tired of guys innocently asking me whats up with our football and basketball programs.

These guys aren't bustin my balls, they just are curious as to why we suck so bad at both these days . I really don't know what to tell them. The ole "our AD [insert RG or MT here] sucks" excuse isn't cutting it anymore. Its JW's mess to clean up, and he needs to get it right or we will sink into the black hole oblivion that was Northwestern from 1972-1992.

He sure would. But first you said you'd love the Rev, who is a far cry from a successful mid-major coach, not even a head coach. Then you said you'd take either a successful mid-major coach or an Illinois guy. The right mid-major coach is not in question; taking someone so obviously unqualified because he's an Illinois guy is a bad idea (again, IMO).

I hear ya. I just hope all turns out well in the future whoever the coach may be.

Think we've been in it already for the past 10 years :(

While not a dig at Groce, this qualifies as being done with the coaching, imo.

"It’s awfully early to be giving up on this season when the Thanksgiving leftovers are still fresh in the fridge. But the onus is on this team and this coaching staff to make us believe otherwise.

I no longer believe what I’m told."

This team was off the rails last year and I got bounced stating that a few players should be going elsewhere as well as the coach. Oh well.

Whitman should be contacting Ben Jacobson. Buyout is $3.6M. That isn't much to rich donors. Contract is only $900k/year. Give him $2.5M/year. No brainer. Question is whether he would be interested. Sons are 12 and 10 yrs old and right now he is only a few hours away from his hometown, Bismark, ND.

As a current UNI student, I'll see if I can find any "inside info" on Jacobson and his loyalty to the program. I have multiple classes with one of his players.

Thanks for doing some legit digging.... interested to see what you find out. He has been there a decade, and in that time I'm sure he has been contacted multiple times. Iowa State would have been a job that made him ponder (close to home and a legit program). It is amazing in this day and age that he hasn't left with all his success and that low of a salary. I'm guessing he loves being a short drive from family. Champaign would probably make his drive home 7-8 hours versus 3.

I highly doubt Jacobson is going to tell his players "yeah I'm not very committed and might leave for a good offer." So I wouldn't expect to hear much.

Yeah, I don't expect any concrete info. Just curious about a player's own thoughts that are most likely pointless but will give this board something to discuss ;)

Bismarck is a good 8-9 hours from Cedar Falls. Add another 5 running hard from Champaign. He seems pretty entrenched there and honestly I'd prefer us to try to get a guy with P5 success. We've had enough mid major coaching the last 10 years.

He is entrenched there and has had plenty of offers. 10 years of sustained success at a school that had no history of success is an awesome track record. Getting a coach with power 5 success that isn't a retread is a complete pipe dream. List some realistic options.

Jacobson took over a program in very good shape from Greg McDermott and as far as I can recall he hasn't been the focus of any P5 coaching search.

He signed that big extension almost immediately after their Sweet 16 run where they beat Kansas, and was mentioned as a possibility for Minnesota when they hired Baby Pitino and Iowa State when they hired Steve Prohm, but wasn't offered either job IIRC.

Also, he's not from Bismarck, he's from Mayville, ND, a tiny little town that coincidentally also produced Lute Olson.

Wow, he's fed up. Saying he's done w/ JT and calling out JCL's one-dimensionness and MM and MT's defensive ineptitude seems pretty harsh for Tupper this early (not that any of it's not the gospel truth). No dig at Groce though, other than maybe saying sit JT and play TJL.

I think he went a little too far with that. As frustrated as everyone is (including me) , itd be nice to let Groce finish out the non conference to see where everything is at. I honestly think Groce needs a little more time to find the right lineup to put out there. I cant blame him for being hesitant to put Lucas in after all that missed time. That being said, his substitution patterns have always been awful, so I dont expect anything to change.

McDermott was successful but never won more than 23 games or won a NCAA tournament game, which is nothing compared to Jacobson. As far as job offers, there isn't anything concrete about past job offers, but that isn't surprising as there wouldn't be if he didn't seriously entertain them. Scouring the internet it is apparent he loves Cedar Falls because it offers him a low-key place to raise a family, which is analogous to how he grew up and a low-pressure situation, which is also congruent with raising a family. I have also gathered that he has ambition to at least have a chance to win big (he has referenced Brad Stevens, Mark Few and Greg Marshall as coaches that have had a chance at winning at the highest level at a mid-major). My conclusion is that he may listen to a dynamic athletic director at a university that has a small town feel that may be just close enough to his roots....that offers him up to $3M per year.
