Just some thoughts...
Last night, I was watching parts of the Wisconsin and Ohio State game. There was a break in the broadcast, and the analysts were talking about the stats of Maryland's freshman. Sounds like the turtles have a good core of freshman, as when you combine their ppg, they are averaging about 25-30 a game. What you can take away from that is, it's not just Melo you have to guard. But Jackson and Cowan can have a big night if you don't defend them.
It also depends which Illinois team shows up. If the Illinois team that beat Michigan appears again this Saturday, I think they'll win. If the team that played Maryland on the road shows up, chalk that one up as an L.
I think one of the vast differences in this upcoming game is Maryland's frontcourt is better than Michigan's. They'll be more physical.
Getting Mav involved early is key. Some mid-range action from he & Leron to draw Dodd away from the hoop would be nice to see.
Win this one, and we can get back on track.
It was 16.Yeah, but we also beat them by 20. I think we only have to be up by 1 to win the game.
But that is how you beat Michigan. Michigan is a really good offensive team. They shoot well and don't turn it over. You beat them by crushing them on the boards and exposing their crappy defense. The Illini did exactly what you are supposed to against Michigan.
Maryland is a much different game. They are way better on defense so you won't shoot 60%, but on the flip side they haven't been as good as Michigan on the offensive side. Overall they are a better team then Michigan, but as the poster said you only have to beat them by 1.
Groce: We did some good things. Still concerned about defensive efficiency.
Groce: We still have to find a way to slow opponents down better than we did the other day. Offense covered that up.
Groce: Can you count on shooting 63 percent every night in this league? Probably not.
Groce: For us to move forward and continue to grow, we have to defend harder and more consistently.
Groce: D.J. Williams back with the team.
Groce: Not going to address the matters anymore with D.J. since it's personal in nature. Williams available tomorrow
Groce: Young guys sometimesread their press clippings a little bit more than vets. We need to try to keep them focused, even-keeled
Groce: JCL hasn't had full offseasons. But he's getting better every day, defensively and when to use the dribble.
Groce: I think JCL has figured out how to slow the game down a little bit with the dribble. More undder control.
Groce: Te'Jon gives more athleticism laterally and Kipper is just an athlete.
Groce: Kipper ran wrong play 3-4 times. He knows that. He's working hard and cares. Can live with that w/ his effort
Groce: Leron can fin ways other than scoring to impact the game. Enthusiasm, effort, energy and rebounding.
Groce: Great to be home in front of our fans. They were great for first two B1G games and know when to get loud.
Groce: We know the fans that have stuck with us through thick and thin an we appreciate them more than they know.

We have an advantage on about every team we play: our Depth. We have to utilize it. We can wear teams down, and we can rest guys and avoid lags that other teams cannot.
please site your source.Analytics tell a different story. The numbers indicate that depth generally does a few things...depth limits the impact of injuries and limits the impact of foul trouble. In college basketball, the numbers don't support the notion that depth provides advantage re: opponents fatigue.

I don't see any teams playing 5 guys for 40 minutes each. If your depth is of higher quality than your opponents, then you gain an advantage in those minutes played by non-starters. My belief is that our non-starters are better than other team's non-starters. Therefore, we have that advantage. When we rest our starters, there is less of a drop off then when our opponents rest their starters. I would call that an advantage. And again, this is just an opinion. Ny eyes show me this.
If you're a running or pressing team, then depth can give you an advantage -- but Illinois is neither. I think the part of the reason we played great against UM is because the rotation was shortened. And while our non-starters might be better than other teams', if they're using basically using an 8 man rotation with starters playing 30 minutes (see Maryland's last game against IU) and we're running 10 guys out there, our non-starters are playing against their starters.
I would like to see a show of hands from everybody who said the Illini would win 0 or 1 or 2 games in the first seven games in conference and how they think we already won 2 given the tough schedule.
It was 16.
My point is that it's unrealistic to think we are going to shoot 64% against Maryland and it's also unrealistic to allow them to shoot over 50% from the field and expect to win.
This years BT has too much parity. I just hope this is the year the Illini catch a hot streak for 4 to 5 games no matter the opponent. I would prefer if it started now! Like what I'm starting to see from the likes of JCL, MAV (Who I have always been critical on, "jokes on me"), and KIPSET. Sports is all about momentum.
