I'll add to Mark Smith's story with this highlight. I counted 3 maybe 4 dribbles from half court to the rim. How many players can do that? https://twitter.com/mark_smith_13/status/816730975149445128

I couldn't open the video so I can't see the angle he took but it's not unusual for D-1 level athletes to do it in two dribbles. The HS staff I work on has actually stolen a speed layup drill from everyone's favorite replacement candidate, Archie Miller, where he requires his guys to score a full speed layup from the half court/sideline corner in 2 dribbles or less.

Not to reply my own post like a d-bag, but after posting I was finally able to get the video to open. 3 dribbles but the first one looked more like it came off the move to get by his man. 2 more from there. I love how he attacks the rim to dunk the ball. If he doesn't end up here I might vomit. Really can't believe how bad I want us to get this kid despite not knowing who he was a few months ago.

Depends on a lot of different factors - including and most importantly, the coach. Most coaches already have loyalties to assistants and bring along their own staff. On the other hand, if the person lacks the clout, JW might convince them to keep Walker. Plus there's a lot of other situations in there...

I definitely do not disagree, there's also the factor of wanting to completely remove any of the stench from the previous regime (like when jerrance wasn't retained by groce.) I'm just pointing out that if there were a head coaching change in a year where there is a high level of roster turn over, there is a better than normal chance that the lead recruiter on a monster incoming class would get considered for retainment.

Depends on the coach, obviously.

It's a well known drill, we use it at AAU all the time. It teaches players to "push" the ball forward on the fast break away from their body, while maintaining control. They have to do it in 2-3 dribbles. From the half court/sideline corner they can't do it in less than 2 dribbles, however, (i.e., in 1 dribble) because it ends up being a floater more than a true layup.

The Greek Freak is indeed an athletic freak, it looks easy in 1 dribble, he even has to duck to avoid hitting his head on the rim, but he has the longest stride in the NBA. He can cover the length of the court in 3 less strides (10) than the average NBA player (13).

John Calipari said Derrick Rose could do the entire court in 2 dribbles. Some sick athletes floating around that NBA. Unfortunately not enough on our team. Bringing the point back to smith I think he's definitely a step in the right direction. From people who have seen him live, how long are his arms? How is his lateral movement? Does he's slide with his hands wide or handcheck?

I've thought about this, too, and I'm okay with that one holdover. He secured the Tilmon commitment and is probably the reason why we made Ramsey's final 13. Hopefully, Fletcher would stay, too, but I'm digressing in the recruiting thread.

True story, I saw Jamie Brandon take off with a foot inside the foul line and dunk at Leo HS as an 8th grader

Mark Smith named MVP at Salem Invitational Tournament. He had 27 in the finals game.

Want Smith pretty bad. All of the skills, and bringing it consistently his senior year. Have to wonder if we're still a favorite though. Nothing but negativity around this program right now.

It's not, but The Central Illinois Sleeper is a tale as old as time on this board, so this thread would be incomplete without the latest Bruninga news.

Tarise Bryson(ISU) MVC player of the year 2001-Decatur

Clint Cuffle(Evansville) Avg 16 ppt and 5 rbd Junior year- Riverton

Ravonte Rice- we all know him

Carlton Fay(SIU)- Double digit scorer for 3 years-Hennepin

Tyler Sebring(Elon) Averaging 14 ppg and read as Soph- Normal

James Kinney(San Jose St) 17ppg career- Champaign(originally recruited to Ohio by John Groce)

Nate Miller(Bowling Green) 14 and 7 as senior to lead team-Springfield

Jeremy Crouch(Bradley) All conference MVC- Pekin

There is a ton of them really depending on definition of sleeper.

Those are mostly Midmajors who would not make a big difference in the BT, IMO.

Taphorn from Northwestern is also from Pekin. Gets playing time on a good team.

Yeah I tried to stay away from guys who had big Conference offers but who made a substantial impact at a lower level. Central Illinois usually produces a few D1 players per year.

I targeted guys without major offers who had an impact at lower levels. I know many wouldn't have made an impact at Major schools but it was exercise to show that there have been Central Illinois Sleepers that arguably could have played up a level as Ravonte did.

Rockford, not Central Illinois, but Fred VanVleet is probably the biggest recent "didn't play in Chicago and got overlooked" miss, right? (maybe the only "really regret that one")

That seems unlikely. I can't imagine it is all that common to keep a member of the previous staff when coming in unless the new coach is forced into it. That would likely leave a bad taste in the new coach's mouth too.

Why would you consider keeping any coaches from a staff that was fired for underperforming?

Coach McClain was a completely different scenario. Coach left and continuity of a talent roster.

Ayo and Morgan Park at Simeon (Kezo, Horton-Tucker, Clements, Messiah Jones) tonight for another Battle of Vincennes. Always a great game even if Ayo ends up being the only guy we recruit from the 2 teams. Scheduled tip is 5 CT but with city traffic and the CPS being the disorganized body it is and forgetting to send buses to schools on time, can never be sure about that (and let's hope they get all the baskets over the floor cranked up correctly.) After Simeon got upset at Bogan last week, they're number 2 in MOB's ranking --the Trib, JoeHoops and CSN Power Preps Top 20 all kept them at number 1 -- and MP is 6th.

Jacob Epperson a legitimate high major option in 2017

RIVALS' REACTION

While strength gain is in order for Jacob Epperson, his passing skills, motor, and touch from 15-feet and in have made the Australian import a fine late target for the high-major rung. We value his ability to get up and down the floor and could see the La Lumiere product becoming a solid high-post frontcourt weapon in the years ahead as it seems as if the likes of Creighton and Illinois are right up there with him.

Illinois: “I haven’t really watched them too much but I like how they get up and down the floor, it’s sort of my style of game.”

This has to be a positive, right?
