My hope is that Groce is enough of a salesman to get Smith to take us seriously where at some point he's in a room with Whitman and asks about the elephant in the room....and Whitman's response, however he has to frame it, gives Smith enough confidence that should there be a new staff, it will be one which will develop him to his utmost potential and Smith commits.

I don't know how that happens....but if Smith goes elsewhere because we are in limbo and proves to be what we think he can be, it would be really disappointing.

Prepare for disappointment cause that first paragraph ain't happening.

I think the best case is his recruitment stays quiet, long enough, that we get another shot at him in March/April. Probably a long shot at that.

I know...just grasping at straws on why to be optimistic. Cause even if by some miracle we win out the regular season, I've mentally moved on from Groce.

Frazier's senior stats this year are 27,6,4.5 and 3 steals while shooting 50% from the floor. No love :)

Not to mention, TF is the main focus of Wellington's opponents. Doing it against double teams on a consistent basis.:chief:

It's too bad a guy like Smith is blowing up right at this time; fans can't be this vocal about firing a coach and not expect to concede at least some recruiting mojo. It doesn't exactly help the coaches' cause when they go out and try to sell the program to a recruit. If Smith is interested, they either convince him they're not going anywhere, or they're keeping ties open for the next stop, if, in fact, they do move on. If there is a next staff, they'll probably be in too late to work Smith.

Jerrance trying to stick it to us again

Actually Jerrance relying on the Illini to find those sleepers - he obviously has not shown the knack for finding his own players unless they are a top 50 type of player.

With Goodwin out for the year, Smith has a very good chance of being Illlinois Mr. Basketball. Why would anyone think bigger schools are not going to get involved? This is not Snacks 'sticking it' to us again, it's Snacks and a bunch of other schools getting in on a high level PG who just happened to become available and blow up at the same time. Especially when they can use the rationale to Smith that the fans want the coach recruiting him at Illinois to be gone after this year (as I Bomb pointed out).

... What were Mark Smith's POY & Mr. Basketball odds when the season began?!?!? The table is set for the Edwardsville star guard.

With injured Althoff star Jordan Goodwin out of the POY & Mr. Basketball picture, this race will get even more interesting....

Mike, have you ever seen a breakdown of who votes for MR. BB? The best I found is it is media and coaches, but not very specific.

Jerrance is very well connected in Illinois and the HS and AAU scene, so he has known Mark Smith. Kansas does not recruit many sleepers, so unless a player is highly ranked, or projected to be highly ranked, or starts getting into POY or Mr. Basketball discussions, they will not receive much interest. Even for someone like Mark Smith, receiving interest and getting recruited at Kansas is still far from ending up with a scholarship and getting a roster spot. None of the big name schools need to get on "sleepers" early on.

nope. I think it's mostly media but I've never seen any specifics as to who although I think anyone who writes about high school basketball or gets credentials to the state tournament gets a ballot. Wikipedia here just mentions "the voters" but it does provide a list of past winners and if Smith gets it this year it would be insane for any school who can get him to listen to not jump in the scrum. I think if he chose today it would be us narrowly over Northwestern. A month from now, who knows?

Seems it's sponsored by the Chicago Tribune in conjunction with the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association and voters are statewide coaches and media. Last year, at least, Charlie Moore was first on 36 of 85 ballots. I still don't know who exactly does the voting.
(One interesting sidenote from last year is that Matt Chastain finished tenth, ahead of DaMonte Williams, Devin Gage, Nojel Eastern, Evan Gilyard and Christian Negron.)

Also, just throwing this out there.
For anyone who has been following Henricksen and MOB's twitter the last week or so. It appears the CPS is totally realigning the Chicago Public League starting next year, including adding a Super Conference.

With a potential 10-team league featuring Simeon, Young, Morgan Park, Curie, Kenwood, North Lawndale, Bogan, Uplift, Orr and Farragut, there would be no debate over the state’s best conference ever again.

Another CPS source says that the "super conference" games might be played at the DePaul arena. Treasure these last few days of CPS hoops.

So, if this happens and if --and that second one is a big if judging by the last 20 years -- DePaul can get it together and hire a decent coach, there could be another dangerous northern school, this one with a built-in recruiting advantage, much like we had when the State Tournament finals were held in Champaign every year.
It's not going to get any easier.

I've been hearing frightening tails of depaul becoming relevant again for 20 years.

Ah, the ones that got away. What could have been…

<http://writingillini.com/2017/01/25/illinois-basketball-class-2017/>

I was surprised by how many highly ranked players had Illinois as one of their 3 or 5 or whatever schools

It's pretty unbelievable how bad they've managed to be for so long.

That Super Conference idea is cool though. They could make a big show of it on a weekend, play a quintuple header!

I might go check that out if there were Illini targets and/or commits involved.

Maybe Keatts or Martin will stop by for a quick visit? ;)

Can you imagine the "behind the scenes" rumor mill meltdown that would take place if Keatts suddenly showed up at Smith's games? Ha!
