I understand the love for Smith but another big man is way more an urgent issue. Who is going to defend our basket and rebound when Black/Tilmon needs a break? The poor positional balance of Groce's recruitment is a key reason leading us to this hell. AJ and DJW are good talents but they cannot see the floor because we have too many wings. If Groce gets Smith, I believe at least one of Smith/Fraizer/DaMonte will head out in their soph or junior year because of PT distribution. And we will keep seeing terrible interior defense.

With Goodwin out for the year, Smith has a very good chance of being Illlinois Mr. Basketball. Why would anyone think bigger schools are not going to get involved? This is not Snacks 'sticking it' to us again, it's Snacks and a bunch of other schools getting in on a high level PG who just happened to become available and blow up at the same time. Especially when they can use the rationale to Smith that the fans want the coach recruiting him at Illinois to be gone after this year (as I Bomb pointed out).

... What were Mark Smith's POY & Mr. Basketball odds when the season began?!?!? The table is set for the Edwardsville star guard.

With injured Althoff star Jordan Goodwin out of the POY & Mr. Basketball picture, this race will get even more interesting....
I'm sorry, but I don't agree with the fact that Jordan Goodwin is out of the POY and Mr. Basketball picture. I think he should still be in it. He's played the majority of the games this year, so I think he deserves to be a candidate.

I think you are reading and interpreting that incorrectly....Jordan Goodwin is not playing the rest of the season. I think he's still a POY candidate and well deserved but I think that is what the post meant was Goodwin is not playing the rest of the season not out of the POY race.

Sure he could still be a candidate. There will be a bunch of them. But he will have absolutely 0% chance of winning the award because of the injury.

The Mr BB award has always given a lot of weight to players whose teams make deeper tourney runs.

It's pretty unbelievable how bad they've managed to be for so long.

That Super Conference idea is cool though. They could make a big show of it on a weekend, play a quintuple header!

I might go check that out if there were Illini targets and/or commits involved.

It would be great for the fans and the CPS, but bad for tons of teams and a lot of players who would be classified as 'minor-league'. According to MOB and Joe Hoops on No Shot Clock the coaches are also against it --actually 8 of the 10-- are. Think about coaching a team in a league where 9 of the 10 teams are in the state top 10 (2A-3A-4A) and the tenth was and is now 18th in 4A.

But I admit that even though these days I pretty much restrict my high school hoop addiction to Aurora or the Fox Valley, I'd hop the train for a quintuple-header downtown like that.

No one knows anything for sure, but Curie coach Mike Oliver has heard teams would stay in the super conference for 3 years.

But I agree with you -- pro/rel is what has kept the Public League so interesting all these years. You get games between 7th and 8th place teams that are virtual wars as they try to avoid getting sent from Red to Blue or Blue to White. But 3 years -- that's a kids' entire high school career. The real good ones are going to keep those 10 'super' teams super for a long time.

If Mark Smith was worried about playing time at Illinois he ain't going to Kansas.

Not necessarily true. Mason moving on, Graham and Svi will probably leave. Newman and Vick their only real backcourt players going into next year at the moment, well plus combo guard committ Garrett.

They'll pull in high 4 star or 5 star talent at his position every year. Heck his senior year he could very well be on the bench behind a freshman. Albeit, it could be one of the most talented freshman in the nation. Very risky going to Kansas if PT is the biggest concern.

FWIW, they're starting backcourt the last 3 years were rated lower then he will be when it's all said and done.

Counterpoint, maybe Mark Smith is just really that good.

Just a thought but what is to say... he won't be on the bench his senior senior yr at Illinois as well with some talented 4 or 5 star guard coming in..

If i'm not mistaken Illinois is considered a high major.......
