I know it's not the best league, but I think Joe Dooley at Florida Gulf Coast warrants some attention.

Former assistant to Self at KU.

Probably. Unflinchingly defending coaches against losing (as opposed to "moral" issues) is how media members retain access to the coaching profession.

I don't think he did it necessarily to defend a coach. He did it to try to make a point that Illinois does not have a winning tradition, that we are a traditional middle of the pack B1G team, and that we should have been happy to have Weber, and that we could never realistically pass IU, MSU, tOSU, and Michigan in the B1G hierarchy.

Tim Doyle tried to say the same thing on BTN, but we all know he's just another butt hurt former NW player whose teams never stayed within 25 points of Illinois during his entire career there.

Minnesota just got a little delusional about their basketball program. Big mistake by them.

Anyone else remember how Gottlieb said we needed to 'know our place' when we fired Weber? Anybody think he'll have something to say about us again when we make our next coaching change?
Tubby deserved to be fired. Minnesota's mistake was hiring Lil Pitino. If they'd have spent real money on a real coach, they might be in a better place.

As for Gottlieb, his family is pretty tight with Weber from what I remember. Dougie still defends Bruuuuuuce on Twitter regularly. So no, I doubt he says a thing about Groce getting fired. Coach Ladder is a miserable failure at Illinois, and (most) everyone knows it.

Trolling large fanbases is also something a media member who wants attention is wise to do.

"Know your place" stuff around coaching carousel season is web traffic gold.

Boy did he love tOSU back when they are on that great 5 year run. They were one of the programs he claimed Illinois could 'never surpass.' Loved to refer to them as "The" Ohio State University and called them an 'elite, elite program.' I wonder what he'd have to say about them now. Their depth isn't good but there's no way you should be tied for the second worst record in the league when you have a future lottery pick at PG with solid pieces around him.

Off topic, but love Kendall. :)

Not a bad name to bring up as he learned under a top 5 coach for 10 years and has done well in 4 years at FGC he is 83-44 overall. If he goes to the tourney again this year he may get a look at some higher mid-major schools I would add him to the list!!

I'm really not a fan of bashing coach cliches or metaphors that they try to use to motivate their team. Several teams around the country do it. If they are losing, it's laughable; if they are winning, it's genius. Let's be honest here, if Groce brought out this ladder philosophy in year 1, we would have worshipped it! I get our frustration, but let's not pretend Groce is on the same level as Tim Beckman, who I believe once tried to turn OSKEE into an acronym?! Classic :D

The ladder is universally panned. And it's dumb and desperate. So yes, it deserves to be mocked.

Not saying that I agree wtih this, but just something I found!

If John Groce is Fired at Illinois, Who Could Replace Him?

I saw this article last week no way I hire Kelsey this guy is only 76-52 in four years and never been to the NCAA tourney? I know they beat Illinois in November and they are 16-5 so far this year but this guy is a few years away at least. The only name on here that made sense was Keatts.

"Match the success of Bruce Weber?" Wow that's a good one. Not saying Groce would have been the answer but I'm pretty sure if you handed Groce the keys to a top 10-15 program, he could at least keep them there and not lead them to the epic free fall from grace that Weber led us on. Groce was after all named the recruiter of the year in 2006 and helped land several other Kentucky-esque classes at tOSU.

Illiniboard isn't bad, and McColley (despite faults) is often worth a skim. But other internet bloggers are pretty much universally awful.

I mean specifically related to coaching carousel stuff.

I could produce an article on candidates for Washington or NC State or Mizzou that's better than that.

What about Tommy Amaker? I know he was a disaster at Michigan but he seems to have found his groove at Harvard going 188-100 in 9 years. If he makes the tourney this year that will be 5 out of 6 years for the Ivy league that is really good. I can't remember that far back but did he recruit well at Michigan?

Oh there's definitely wider audience for that. Fire it up

The problem with your statement is that if Weber had more success the last few years at U of I he wouldn't have been fired. Weber was a good coach he just couldn't recruit well enough. Groce seems to be the opposite he can recruit he just can't coach.
