I do not think it is a good indication of a coaches ability to pick 2 or 3 players here and there and point to there improved play over 2, 3 or 4 years as proof or disproof of the coaches merits. There will be many 18 year olds that will show great improvement by age of 21 even if they only played pick-up at IMPE. A good coach raises the level of all the ships, I mean players, over time. Any 4th year player under the same head coach should have a very good idea of what is expected on offense and should be able to be in the right position most of the time and play serviceable minutes of defense that make up for physical limitations because of experience and technique. This is where/why I am sorry to say Coach Groce needs to go.

Down Big Ten, actual parity in NCAA this season and still not a lock for tourney in year 5. Time for a change.

The conference is actually pretty competitive this year, there's just no elites. Every team besides Rutgers is top 100 KenPom. The more discouraging thing for me is that we weren't all that competitive against the top teams of the conference, despite those teams not being truly top level squads.

It's a weak conference this year, imo. And yes, I agree we looked like bad vs the top teams and IU. Just very frustrating considering this being a veteran team.

I think Cuonzo or Keatts could take the same group of players further than Groce. I would take either one!!

I don't know about that. Cuonzo has 5 star talents at Cal and he is just as much in the bubble as Groce. I would roll the dice on Keatts though.

From what I am hearing... There is a very, very good chance Smith comes to U of I if Illinois makes tournament and Groce stays. Next 2 weeks are huge to what happens to this program.

If this is the case announce he is staying right now and get Smith

The people acting like the last 3 games mean nothing what are you attributing the better play to? Do you think it's just luck? I think quality point guard play explains it. Lucas has helped on offense but even more on defense

Curious here, too. If Groce had gone 11-2 non-con and 10-8 in the B1G this year (probably safely in the tournament), but the team continued to be prone to stretches of hero ball, sloppy defense, and middling effort, would people be saying, "this team should have won 25 games and contended for a Big Ten title! Groce needs to go!"

I have big questions about whether Groce is the right coach to lead this team into the future, but if he makes the tournament it will be considered overachieving based on preseason expectations outside the Illini fan base. I honestly want JG replaced with someone like Archie Miller or Monty Williams, but if he wins the next 3-4 games I have no real argument against his retention.

Is Groce such an abysmal coach that he'd bomb even with a well-rounded roster stacked with top-75 talent and plenty of ball handlers? My instinct is that he'd do fine - not as well as some other coaches, but I think he's probably an okay enough coach to win a lot of games under favorable circumstances. I think that's a dividing line right now: some fans think he's such an awful coach that he'll fail regardless of talent/roster composition, while others think he could string together a run of 25+ win seasons given the right personnel.

FatGreg, your last few posts are right on.

People don't seem to realize that there are 13 other teams in the B1G doing their best to win - 25 plus wins a year just doesn't happen very often. Even if you are Tom Izzo and have your team going deep into both the BTT and NCAA tourney regularly, you get there at best about half the time. He has 12 in 22 years (7 final fours). Beilein has 2 25+ game winning seasons in 10 years, Crean has 3 in 9 years, and Thad Matta has had 7 in 13 years. Note that these figures represent total record and not regular season, so BTT, NCAA and NIT games are included.

If getting a new coach costs us Smith.., i'm okay with that.

I am not! Somebody blows this class it will set us back, we need top players and we have them in the young players and the recruits. Nobody can tell me we wouldn't win big with Lucas, Smith and Frazier.

That's fine, like I said my opinion. I watch enough to see it's weak. Thanks.

More decent teams than ever, we have 13 decent teams, if Nebraska is the 13th best team in the league that's the best 13th place team the league has ever had, the top is obviously down

I share the same deep sincere Fear of Losing a top class -best we have had in several years and now over a possible coaching change conversation.

Coach Groce currently has this team playing well and his use of freshmen players is a bright spot to coaching.

I say Groce has earned a chance to coach the best recruiting class he has ever assembled next year. All that hard work is going to pay off trust me. No one out works John Groce you would be amazed how hard he works and cares.

That is called Leadership by example he brings a level of intensity to everything he does as a coach and his team is responding to that level of leadership. :illinois:

I absolutely agree and think he needs a chance to coach this group, finally some playmakers and we are on the upswing

I do not think we will win big with those players. I do not think what Groce is doing is working here.

I absolutely think we will win with these guys and Lucas and Nichols, Black, Finke, and JCL. That group would be the best combination of players we have had since Groce. Last 3 games have all been very impressive wins

Mediocre, yes.

we have a three game winning streak, which is nice, but lets not forget that steak consists of wins over Northwestern, iowa and Nebraska... not exactly murderers' row there. The body of work for this coach is substandard to what is expected.

Make the tournament? That should be enough to keep Gorce - that was THE determining factor.

Besides Groce has figured out that there is something called proper subbing. Which, I think, was the REAL issue all along.

if Groce is coaching them .500 big ten basketball is the ceiling.

Agreed. I think we have an ample sample size to see what he is as a coach right now. That's not to say that he can't learn and adjust to have success somewhere during his career.

IF next years team can play great D, from the very start, I think we do very well. The offense should come naturally.
