Per Jeff Goodman (and Jeremy Werner) Cleveland State needs a coach. Maybe Thomas already has his new guy - Groce.

Cleveland State expected to part ways with Gary Waters, sources told ESPN. News conference tomorrow. The grad... http://es.pn/2nbr4MI

Gary Waters is Gone. Who Will Coach Cleveland State?

Jerrod Calhoun, head coach, Fairmont State
Look up either “Rollie Massimino coaching tree” or “Bob Huggins coaching tree.” Realistically, either statement would be accurate for Calhoun. The 34-year old head coach at Division II Fairmont State has two advantages: Cleveland State roots and a reputation for building a winning program...

Jim Groce, head coach, Illinois
Groce has big advantages and disadvantages in the coaching race. The biggest ad? He’s the coach Thomas hired at Illinois after a wildly successful stint at Ohio. With the Bobcats, Groce notched a Sweet Sixteen appearance that including beating Michigan, which probably made then-football coach Brady Hoke a bit uncomfortable.

The disadvantages? Well, first is that he’s not exactly available at the moment. The Illini still have Groce under contract as of now, so he still has a job to do. Also, even if he gets bought out by Illinois, he may be a bit rich for CSU’s blood. If either scenario is a deterrent, consider one of his assistants, Dustin Ford, as a viable alternative.

Billy Donlon, assistant coach, Michigan
Patrick Tatham, assistant coach, Maine Red Claws

Undoubtedly, there will be additional names that pop up during the search process, but one thing is likely clear to Thomas and Cleveland State: The program needs a boost, and the next head coach must bring it in a big way.

OK one thought. What if we loss to Michigan and get a NIT bid. We win the NIT than what? JW keeps Groce?

Never heard of Jim Groce. Maybe we should add him to our list of candidates.

Calvin,

Your "dumb luck" analogy is spot on, sometimes you get lucky and you can't figure out why.

Kim Anderson wins a D2 natl championship, goes back to his alma mater where he is beloved. Falls flat on his face.

Bo Ryan wins 2 D2 natl championships, goes to UWM where he is middling, gets the job at UW where he is literally their 5th choice and builds a mini dynasty.

On the surface, these two choices are not that different.

Not that it's relevant but you're off on your Bo Ryan history...4 D2 national championships. Brought UWM back to life. He was hired after UW's first choice, Majerus, turned down the job.

Very different on the surface.

I laughed at the WILDLY SUCCESSFUL stint at Ohio.

I assumed it was an intentional error used for comedic effect. The device seems to have worked. Jim & John Groce have about the same stature w/i the coaching community.

Just to be even clearer, his 4 national titles were with D3 UW Platteville...

Maybe they meant Jim Croce? Probably has in in with a certain recruit from the South Side of Chicago that stands about 6'4.

I've heard about this guy. Think his name is Leroy Brown. Purdue is after him too. Heard he carries a razor in his shoe.

Another Illini connection to the story, Gary Waters was once on Guenther's short list of candidates and Guenther was apparently very impressed with him.

We should start a GoFundMe for Cleveland St. to hire Groce. Who's in?

Groce has got a name. If it gets him nowhere he'll go there proud.

Sorry, that's all I got. The Rutgers game just about killed me. I see another Beilein wipeout of Groce's team; it's pretty much been boyslaughter by UM the last 5 years. They'll be done a bit after noon Champaign time; team back in time for Thursday night cocktail hour at the bars. Really have no interest in the NIT right now, but will probably watch anyway. There's more experience for TJL and Kipper et al, and MH's run at Dee's points number. Whatever.

Right now there is not a coach available that wows me. Is Bennie Lewis or Landon "Sonny" Cox still around. How Sergio McClain, what happen to Kenny Battle. Steve Bardo or Kendall Gill interested.

No offense to anybody specific.......

but I keep reading posts that there are no available coaches out there that "wow" them or "excite" them.

Why does anybody need to be wowed??

If the coach WINS, that is all I need. I don't care if he is a great X's and O's coach, or a great recruiter, or what mix of talents he has. JUST WIN!

Big name, mid-major, assistant coach........none of those things matter if the next Coach WINS.

You either trust Whitman to find the right guy....or you don't. After the last 10 years of Weber and Groce, I can't believe the arguments on here. Find a good basketball coach that WINS!
