Someone who works for SB Nation is saying Illinois is talking about offering $4.8m/yr to Tony Bennett

Well, 24 million over 5 years sounds like a plausible offer from a round integer standpoint

Cuonzo takes the Mizzou job means Illinois was going after him....IMO. No way he takes Mizzou over Illinois unless Mizzou was going to pay him more. What's scary is if Cuonzo was really offered 3.5 per year.......

Gregory was one of those guys that's great at a place like Dayton, but was just god-awful terribad at Tech. If you thought Groce's in-game adjustments were lacking, Gregory sets a new low standard.

He wasn't even that good at Dayton, in retrospect. Both Oliver Purnell before and Archie Miller after far outshined him in that job.

Gregory is just a guy. I think you could put Groce in that same category.

I don't really want Cuonzo here, but I don't want him at Missouri A LOT more. That will be a recruiting nightmare for us.

Zo is NOT worth 3.5 mil. 2.5 would be more in line with his actual worth. I would love to see us pony up 4.8 for Bennett.

Here’s what I know, Illinois is talking about offering $4.8m/yr to Tony Bennett, they aren’t talking about offering half that for Cuonzo

The legend of Cuonzo the recruiter is starting to slightly outstrip reality.
There seems to be a perception that any other coach at Mizzou wouldn't be a recruiting threat. We've been spoiled by the Kim Anderson era I guess.

What do you think about Geno Auriema jumping to the men's side and coaching the Illini? I've often thought if he really wants to be thought of as a great coach try coaching the men. Not sure it would be a good idea but I've wondered about this for quite some time.

I wrote a post about him being my dark horse (albeit somewhat tongue in cheek) but the knock on him is that he is probably too old, he's around 63. Not to be ageist but we are probably looking for someone younger.

Sterk is not going to be very popular at the next AD convention.

Put me in the minority that isn't as concerned about Cuonzo going to Mizzou. There are multiple pages of concerns about his coaching/development, but now we think he'll be successful if he goes to a rival?

Knock on him? Geno Auriema is a guaranteed HOF coach, arguably the best women's coach ever. If he ever takes the risk to venture over on the other side, it would be for much more stable situation, and a name program. It would not be for a total program rebuilding situation like UI. It is more a knock on us than on him. Not happening.

I know once I post this I'm going to get murdered here. I know Bennett is a good coach and a winner but I don't want to watch his boring style of play at UI at all. I think some of current recruits might leave because their style doesn't fit Bennett's at all. Take it easy on me.

The legend of Cuonzo the recruiter is starting to slightly outstrip reality.

While I agree, it is plausible that he ends up with a roster that includes

-Charlie Moore
-Mark Smith
-Juhwan Harris-Dyson (top-150ish 2017 kid currently committed to Cal but from the east coast)
-Jordan Brown (#5 player in 2018 - from California, but has a great relationship with Zo apparently)
-The three current underclassman Mizzou players worth a crap: Jordan Barnett, Kevin Puryear, and Terrence "Terrance and Phillip" Phillips

Probably won't happen exactly like that, but they'd be very talented very quickly if it did.

He will be successful at getting recruits. Some of them will be recruits that we wanted. He will not win nearly as much as he should with said recruits. IMO.

Right, sadly you only get so much incompetence from your rivals.

The peak era of Illinois basketball happened during the Mike Davis era at Indiana, the Quin Snyder era at Mizzou, the Tommy Amaker era at Michigan and the Steve Alford era at Iowa.

Not a coincidence.
True, but the other peak (late 80's) was during the Knight, Davis, and Frieder era. I personally think the 89 team faced better competition than 05, and to me that makes them better.

But your point still stands.

Tilmon, Pickett could fit. Smith could fit. Damonte and TF probably don't. All returning players however, do.
