Tilmon, Pickett could fit. Smith could fit. Damonte and TF probably don't. All returning players however, do.

TF could fit in a Perrantes-like role, but I agree he'd be better utilized getting downhill off high ball screens nonstop. He's a good shooter and passer, though.

I know once I post this I'm going to get murdered here. I know Bennett is a good coach and a winner but I don't want to watch his boring style of play at UI at all. I think some of current recruits might leave because their style doesn't fit Bennett's at all. Take it easy on me.

My thoughts exactly! I live in ACC territory so I see them a lot on t.v. and his coaching style is B-O-R-I-N-G. Worried that would turn off a lot of blue-chippers who want to run-and-dunk.

You aren't alone, I actually wanted to post this same thing last night. But then my Dominos pizza showed up...

With that being said I would still be thrilled with him being hired because I know we would become stable again at least

Oh how I miss Monical's pizza....

Am I the only one that misses the Braggin Rights Game being on primetime impossible to get tickets for and without a doubt the biggest game nationally on the night it was played. I want mizzou to be good it doesn't mean we can't be better. I hate the game being on at 11 am on espnu

Put me in the minority that isn't as concerned about Cuonzo going to Mizzou. There are multiple pages of concerns about his coaching/development, but now we think he'll be successful if he goes to a rival?

His player development is not all that relevant, we are not in the same conference and only play them once every year. But he is a very good recruiter and would be even more dangerous as a recruiter in the midwest. Taking recruits away from us would be a very negative development, even if he does not develop them. The important thing is that those recruits will not be ending up at UI.

Same with Travis Ford. Whether he succeeds on the court or not is not all that relevant, we do not regularly play them. Yet, he is already winning some competitive recruiting battles against us.

Idk why, I just have this Gut feeling that Bennett will be our next coach. Idk why, but everything I've seen shows it. Anyone else think it's legit possible?

Yes, and I really hope it is. I'm more interested in rebuilding a winning program than "slow" basketball.

FWIW I'm a big fan of solid fundamentals and tough defense so Bennett's been at the top of my list.

Bennett is definitely considered boring out here in Virginia. Which is a good reason he could be scooped up. They don't appreciate winning as much as style and I am a big fan of his teams. Would love Illinois to get him and we can start consistently winning and being boring again. I couldn't believe how apathetic this area was when UVA was a #1 seed in the tourney. I mean...a 1! Oh how I long for those days again.

Right, sadly you only get so much incompetence from your rivals.

The peak era of Illinois basketball happened during the Mike Davis era at Indiana, the Quin Snyder era at Mizzou, the Tommy Amaker era at Michigan and the Steve Alford era at Iowa.

Not a coincidence.

I know they all seemed horrible at the time but Snyder is doing a great job in the NBA, Amaker has taken Harvard to new heights, Alford has shown himself to be very good since he left Iowa.

Like what? Bennett is preparing for his NCAA game at Virginia, so not much is happening until he is out of the tournament.

Personally, I do not think it will be Bennett.

His player development is not all that relevant,

He constantly changes jobs and receives the short-term bump in recruiting (new coach, connections to the area, selling playing time and a program on the rise, etc.), but he needs to develop those players to win. Once the short-term bump of being a new coach wears off, he needs wins to continue the recruiting. He has never had to recruit at the same place for very long. I think it's a big mistake to think that recruiting and player development are binary models.

Exactly. I would love a slow, boring, non entertaining great basketball team more than a fast, entertaining, exciting bad basketball team.

We will appreciate you Tony! :chief:

Not the style of play I want either...but the guy wins and winning is fun. :shield:

I think Illinois ends up with Keatts or one of the Drew brothers. Just a guess on my part

Even his short-term buzz at Mizzou on the recruiting trail hurts us.

It's exceedingly similar to the PJ Fleck situation.

I read today that JW was at the Board of Trustees meeting this morning, in closed session. It's not implausible that, though we may not hear about it for a while, he already has his man. I know nothing of BOT affairs, but I doubt that the AD regularly attends.

If we were winning games who cares if we get 5 stars... Seriously give me number one seeds with a team full of 3/4 stars instead of first round NIT exits with 3 5 stars...

So like.... do we really want Tony Bennett?

Back to back 30 win seasons in the hardest basketball conference with an E8 and S16 app? Yeah, Ill watch some 50-40 games if it means we are a one seed.
