IF it is Underwood, I'd be happy. Not falling over myself to purchase season tickets happy, but happy.

There are maybe two semi-realistic guys I'd take over Underwood. Archie and Bryce Drew. Archie would have me jumping for joy. The other two would have me feeling good about Illinois hoops again.

My primary concern with Underwood is recruiting. I'm not somebody that demands Illinois locks down the state, but Underwood's first class at OSU doesn't look like much on paper.

That said, if he's a good enough coach, he can win (see Wisconsin). His teams certainly play a fun style. I'd be curious to see how much his system was strengthened simply by Jawun Evans.

Long story short, would definitely be a good hire. Will T. Boone let him walk?

What you don't know is than Dan is actually a PhD student in the Psych department and we are the focus of his thesis.

Should probably be noted he took over a team that went 3-15 in the Big 12 the year before.

Recruiting is the obvious questions with him.

And inherited one of the 2 best guards in the country.

The extra deep flight tracking seems like a waste of time when you can pay Scout $10/month.

Regarding Underwood, it feels like some people want to win the press conference more than they want to win basketball games.

I don't even want to accept the premise that we're going to poach T. Boone's coach, but he's as clearly both as anyone we've mentioned. Terrific coach.

(Don't tell him that Dan actually tried this, and after watching us prattle on and on and on, went clinically insane. Now he haunts these boards ala Phantom of the Opera)

There was ample reporting that OK St and K St were Underwood's two dream schools. I guess I wouldn't be shocked if he just played us to get a raise out of t boone

That's hard to fathom. In a down year Indiana and Illinois both far outdraw UCLA.

Not really. Most sports in LA, aside from the Lakers and USC football and maybe the Dodgers when they are good, don't have great attendance. There is so much to do in LA besides sports. That's why its baffling that San Diego moved there. Especially after the Rams moved back.

It was a breakdown because his committee determined that the data was fabricated. No humans could actually act as they are presented on this board.

I didn't know much about Underwood. Been reading. If he's our guy then I'm on board. I want a good coach more than a splashy name. Plus he has a Gene Keady face and a hot wife I guess...

You're assuming the only value Walker brings to the table is Tilmon. I think that isn't true. He's great at recruiting and has many contacts.

There are a million reasons why making Walker a requirement would be insane. If someone is your number one option at head coach and you are willing to pay them 4million a year to do their job, then you better trust them enough to make the decision themselves. If walker is that important that he trumps the head coach, what sort of message does that send to the new coach and the players. To undermine your coach from day one would be ludacris. If walker is critical then just make him hc, otherwise any other top coach should be able to figure out if they feel he is important enough to keep or not.

Right. This thing has a bad odor to it.

If Whitman is desperately casting about for any P5 coach this is gonna get real Hurley real slowly.

See this Underwood stuff 2 ways:

Whitman doesn't wanna wait for Miller, Williams, etc to make a decision and is moving to someone who has mutual interest. Aka, not left holding the bag.

Or, it's a play against who Whitman really wants. You gonna make me wait? K, gonna go after someone else then. Either they bite, or hopefully Whitman gets someone he's comfortable with.

High stakes poker with these top guys and they have a lot of suitors. So you have to exact some sort of leverage against them. Best way to do that? Show you have options too.

Oh good, a guy that couldn't get a head coaching job until he was 50, that's a "respected" X and O's guy, that has no proven recruiting ability, and is the opposite of the coach we previously had.

Oh, and he's by far the cheapest choice on the market of all the names out there.

Welcome Bruce Weber, Jr, everyone.

Yep. Groce won the press conference.

And Underwood would actually be a big splash hire.

But facts.

To be clear....

Underwood is definitely not my first choice. For one, I have a hard time believing he would attainable. 1. He is real good. 2. Pickens has some serious cash. 3. He is a Big 12 guy and the K-State job is his dream job.

But to say that we would be anything but blessed to have him as our coach, or that we are shooting so much higher, is dumb.

I like Monty, Archie, both Drew's, Bennett, Buzz Williams, Marshall etc... If we get Underwood or any of those other 5, it has been a very good search.

Other way to look at it - Underwood and Drew would have been guys on anyone's list last year. Maybe we're not starting from scratch.
