For 5th year transfers I'm pretty sure A is the only criteria. Transferring closer to home would be something like the Ahmad Starks situation from a few years ago where you haven't completed your degree but are looking for a waiver to transfer without a sit year.

Correct. And the hardship waiver is no longer an option, so "close to home" is not relevant for any transfer.

Thanks for the clarification!

Can a new coach take away a recruit's offer, even after the recruit signed the NLOI?

I really don't think BU would do that because I think all our recruit's fit well in his system and we have a couple open spots still. But let's say we didn't have any rides left...could BU release a couple recruits from their NLOI and bring in his own recruits?

No.

Your second part is correct. The player would have to request a release. It's a one year agreement that the school must honor.

Skilled in some areas maybe. Running team from point?.. Don't think he is any more skilled then TJL. Seeing floor?... Don't think there are too many better then TJL. Passing?.... Dude... Doubtful at best.
Defense?... We would have to wait and see. but proof today.. TJL

Now if your talking skill at finishing at the rim?...Smith.
Skill at 3 point line?.... Smith
Skill at the eye test without watching game?...Smith

JMO but its all open for discussion.

Doubt you have seen Smith play much if you are doubting his vision and passing skills.

Yes. Michael Orris was released from his NLOI by Groce. But it would be at the player's request.

The players are also seeing how the new coach views them as players fitting into his schemes. Whitman met with Damonte and family way back during the recruiting phase. If that same commitment is there I would expect Damonte to enroll at Illinois. Damonte was looking darn good before the injury. Damonte and M Smith together eould form two big multifacet guards.

Thoughts on how Verge would fit in B-Wood's system? Not the likelihood just the fit

I've pondered this too. Wouldn't hurt to tell him if he can't qualify out of h.s. he'd be welcomed as a juco transfer. Help him get everything straightened out so it could happen. Kid sounds like he has always wanted to play for UI just not sorry if he's going to have the classes for it..

FYI on Da'Monte

#Illini commit Da'Monte Williams told me he's "gonna wait it out", see what new coach Underwood is like before deciding anything.

Underwood reached out to him w/ call but Williams declined to share details. Very unfamiliar w/ Underwood but said it was "good pick up"

Seems entirely reasonable and prudent. If we're working on Smith, that's a lot of guards, especially if each of those envisions being a lead guard. As we know, you can have 2 or 3 guards in college on the floor at the same time, especially if they can play defense, but I can see someone wanting to hear from the coach that there's a plan and an good opportunity to see PT sooner rather than later.

Someone should give Mark Smith a copy of the first round tourney game to watch Thomas Walkup. That could be Smith in this offense. Side note, Smith reminds me physically and athletically of Josh Hart from Villanova.

Thought the same thing. Could play anywhere in the system and cause matchup problems.

I think he fits well. Any guard who can turn the corner and create/finish will fit. He seems energetic in the open court which I also think Underwood would like.

It's funny to see Missouri fans on that tweet talking about him going there when we'd probably block that school anyway. It's like they just became fans or something

If you want to dumb yourself up a bit, go check out the TigerBoard. Other than it being the horrific "thread" message board, its quite comical. One thread asks "Do you think we can win 24 games next year." One of the responses is, "Ya as long as we can secure the Porters, Tilmon and Mark Smith I think we can easily win 20+"

I do not think we would, but hopefully it does not come to that.

Cuonzo is not a good coach. He's had NBA talent at Cal and hasn't won anything.

Also Tigerboard is the most unreadable message board ever. Talk about a headache.

Not very encouraging comments by Monte

Shouldn't be surprising. He has no relationship with Underwood whatsoever. I can't blame a kid for wanting to get to know the guy that will be his coach before re-upping his commitment. If anything, Frazier's quite confirmation is the outlier.

Off topic, but I never realized how impressive the IllinoisLoyalty community was until I ventured over to some other school's boards. WOW.

We've talked about the best case scenario for next year's roster. Worst case is that Tilmon and Da'Monte decommit, Jamall Walker goes to Mizzou and brings Tilmon and Mark Smith with him, JCL bails and transfers to Creighton or something, DJ Williams transfers to DePaul, and we go into next year with a skeleton of a team. I'm guessing that won't happen, but I suppose it's in the realm of possibility.

My guess is it ends up somewhere between those two extremes. It would be incredible if we could keep everybody and even add Smith, but I don't think that will happen.
