One of which is Porter. Absolutely no way goes to Mizzou with the trash roster they have now. Can't imagine he would be anywhere close to the first domino for them. Like I said if he is leaving UI it's likely for a better program/situation that he is already familiar with.

the one big rule of recruiting is that it's fluid. nothing is ever certain until it's announced. everything until then is smoke and mirrors.
that's the reason everyone jumped on your absolute statement. remember we are dealing with high school kids here trying to make one of the biggest decisions of their lives. they change their minds quickly and frequently. any "concrete news" you might hear could change tomorrow no matter how good your source is.
that being said, i think most people here take all "concrete news", whether good or bad, with a grain of salt.

...You didn't even know the LOI release rules granted by the NCAA.. U of I will block Mizzou guaranteed. Letting a signed recruit slip away to a yearly rival? Not happening. If he goes anywhere it will be to a blue blood or SLU.
I don't get all the angst. Everyone seems pleased with the coaching hire so whatever comes of that is what will be. If Tilmon goes to another school, the world keeps spinning for Illini basketball. If he goes to Missouri and thinks that's the best thing for him, good luck to him. I think that's a bad decision but I'm not him. I think Missouri will still be terrible with or without him. And if Porter goes there too, I think they'll still be bad. And it isn't like Porter is going to care about classes, graduation and team wins and making the NCAA tournament. He would be there only because there are no good professional alternatives. Just wait and see how things shake out and relax- if Underwood is as great as everyone seems to think....everything will be fine.

In my opinion Trent Frazier is the most important signee because of how he fits Underwood's system and he's the only one to come out and state he's still committed to the U of I.
2. Tilmon based on perception of a high four star and some say a low 5 star player,
3. Williams based on a legacy recruit.
4. Pickett which he could turn out to be another Malcolm Hill who knows.
You can't restrict players when released them from the LOI. The choice is to not release him and make him sit out a season before picking a new school, or releasing him and he's free to go anywhere else.
If he had enrolled at Illinois and was transferring, then you could block his destinations. Although that's been getting so much negative press recently that most schools will not block too many destinations. And it's moot in this case because Tilmon hasn't enrolled yet.
There's no benefit to being vindictive in this situation, so if Tilmon wants the release, it will be granted. Too much negative backlash otherwise.

Thank you 5*, for the 411. I was also wondering if we might start seeing competition from UWV or SC, given the coaching tree, but I don't know what those guys use in their systems now. Any thoughts on that? Who else uses the spread offense?

If we refuse to release he has to sit out a year. Or an agreement is made that we will grant a release IF he chooses school a,b, or c.
Maybe this isn't the "nice" thing to do but if it has to do with a rival and Zo recruiting dirty, then why not fight fire with fire?

That's the long-term problem. The short-term problem is that the national media would flay us upside-down and then feed us to the dogs (when does Game of Thrones come back?).
That's not exactly true. As I said before, directly from posting from the NCAA, a school can allow athlete who has signed a LOI to reopen his recruiting & not issue a full release until the student decides on what school he wishes to attend. The school, then can grant the full release, or not. That is the schools option. Therefore, a school can block a student from going to a particular school, unless the student wants sit out a year & lose a years eligibility. I do not thin Illinois would do this if Tilmon decided to go to Missouri, but they certainly could, if they wanted to.

You guys are correct. Blocking a student a student-athlete is not the way to handle that situation. Deportation, on the other hand, is definitely the way to go.

That would be an incredibly bad look for Illinois Basketball. I know it's tempting to tell a kid "you signed with the school, not the coach" and restrict them, but you simply can't do it. The player will leave anyway, you'll take a significant PR hit, and it will hurt future recruiting.
If Tilmon wants out, you let him out. End of story.
Gee, where have I heard that before? Oh, I know. This board, about a zillion times already.
And it's still 100% correct and an unshakeable reason why we shouldn't lock Tilmon if (God forbid) he opts out of his LOI.

Kentucky also wanted him. His struggles this year are due to his knee injury. He is diabetic so recovery is more challenging for him than most players. Prior to his injury, he was easily a top 5 big man in the B1G. Iowa State was #4 in the country when we played them and they had no answer for him before he got hurt late in the first half. Really unfortunate how things turned out for him, because I think many of us were expecting him to be the force that he was prior to his injury.
Even if, for the sake of argument, it could be 100% proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that Cuonzo and Miznoz illegally contacted a signed recruit (which I know we would almost never be able to prove) we would still release him or risk the wrath of the media and STL people? Wouldn't that set a terrible president and create a free for all on SIGNED players? "Look guys, there's no penalty for trying to poach another team's players so why not keep pestering them. Maybe you'll get them so why not try?"
I think I said repeatedly Illinois wouldn't do this, but for those who say, they couldn't, they are WRONG. According to NCAA rules they could, IF they wanted to.
No, what I posted is true. You are correct in that you can choose to negotiate the particulars of granting the release, but there are no provisions in the release process to block a school.
If Illinois had actual evidence of tampering from another program then they might think about trying to use that but would have to weigh it against the effect it might have on future recruiting in the area.
Hopefully it is all moot and Tilmon suits up as an Illini.
If some shady move won us a single additional ballgame, I would be all for it, because I am a bad person.
The problem is not that it's morally wrong, it's that it will be counterproductive.
For one, there will be national media outcry and we will cave and let him go anyway. Even if we don't, he might well transfer anyway and sit the year. Even if he doesn't, we'll be entrapping against his will a player who, lets be honest, seems super flaky to begin with. The idea that that is a cornerstone of the future seems specious at best. And even if Tilmon turns out to be a success on the floor, the whole imbroglio will damage our standing in St. Louis and among high school coaches in the state at the absolute worst possible time, when they're making their first impressions of Underwood.
And just as an aside, athletes in the St. Louis metro area all know each other. And not just the basketball players. Lovie Smith's next two recruiting classes will rise and fall to a great extent based on the work we're able to do in the St. Louis area. Having the DIA screw a kid they're all friends with is pretty much the worst possible idea.
