Argh! The legend of Jerrance Howard continues. He is not in the same stratosphere with Yates and Collins. Who did Jerrance ever get us from Chicago? Henry. That is his CPL recruit. From the area Abrams, Egwu, Shaw. Who else?

Yates and Collins were bringing in the top guys. The McDonalds All Americans. The top all staters from there.

Walker has brought more talent to the program than Jerrance did. Heck, Jay Price got better players than Jerrance (Leonard, Paul).

I totally agree with your premise, though.

Thank you! Someone else finally sees through the Urban Legend that is "Snacks".

That is why I suggested getting Coach Irvin's input for an assistant coach for the Illini. If he is sincere, I think he would suggest a great assistant that most, if not all, would accept and respect.

Cheers.
See I have an issue with consulting a Chicago coach about a staff hire. Politics or not, being at the beckon and call of Irvin isn't a good idea either.

Seems like Underwood already has a strong presence and respect in Chicago, based on Irvin's comments after the hire, so we should build off that.

I'm all for hiring a coach with Chicago ties, if he's qualified and the right fit for the job.

Underwood has a lot to sell recruits. Style of play, previous success, player development, etc. Groce never had that pedigree.

it was at least vaguely reported awhile back that the weekend with certain players was what turned him off to Illinois. I'm a Smith fan and was disappointed he lost interest so suddenly. I know you probably don't want to divulge who those certain players were, but can you say whether they are still in the team going forward? Depending on our transfers, who IU hires, how he likes BU and his system, etc., it would be interesting if he could somehow end up back in play for the Beloved.

Yeah, I'd rather not mention any names, not to be mysterious or anything, but it could have just been a personality thing. It sounded like the arrests were probably just as big of a problem with the family as a whole. He was very high on Crean and his offense but as for being back in play, I have no idea.

Not an insider on most situations, but some intel on this:
1) I can't confirm or deny the personality dispute with players - hadn't heard that angle before now.
2) The arrests/team culture hurt us with both Brunson and Smith. With Brunson, it went all the way to the initial commit of DPaul whom the Brunson family knew was a bad egg. With Smith, the arrests and culture.
3) While the player personality aspect may have been a part of the souring during the official visit, I was told specifically that it was a non-coach staff aspect that really turned Smith off. Ironically, it is an aspect that others find appealing, but for Smith, it played a big part in his dislike of the program. FWIW, not sure if this person is still involved with the program or not. I believe he is, so I'd make it pretty much 0% chance Smith would reconsider Illinois.

It's all coming together. Keep the class intact, add Mark Smith and a 5th year big, and away we go. Somehow add Jeffrey Carroll or Brian Bowen and we're looking like a top-20 team next year.

TigerBoard now thinks they're in play for Kevin Knox. Can't keep a "good" message board down.

I'm not hoping on Bowen, just keep the original 4 and add Smith and I'll be happy as a pig in mud.

Meh. I'd rather see Jerry Meyer admit he switched his CB pick solely to get clicks instead of his previous excuses.

Not sure that's entirely fair. It's rare to fire a coach and keep all your recruits. From the outside, it's not unreasonable to think Missouri had a real shot.

Sure but why Mizzou? Cuonzo had not been recruiting Tilmon and Walker was already staying put. Why not the other schools that were among his top choices? I really do think that was just pot stirring.

I'm also just a person who isn't a huge fan of the business model of following around high school kids for recruiting info. That probably makes my opinion of Meyer pretty biased, in fairness. It's obviously big business, but it just seems somehow... wrong. It's why I don't pay for any of the paid sites and instead just subject myself to this roller coaster. Haha

Maybe 3rd-4th in the B10. I stand by that. I don't see top 20 at all. Hope I'm wrong.

I thought I read Carroll was going back to osu if he didn't go pro?

That's the deal with every Illini coach. I think it's good that a Fire guy, Davon Dillard, played for Underwood last year and saw a big uptick in minutes and stats from his freshman year.
Personally, I like the Irvins and enjoy listening to them. I'm sure they're not the cleanest guys when it comes to recruiting --almost nobody in Chicago is -- but they do look out for their kids which is what it should be all about. Unlike say Sonny Cox who was about as sleazy as they come and was all about Sonny.

ps - Jeebus, if I'd known all the Irvin haters and conspiracy theorists were going to be up in arms about it, I wouldn't have even put it up.

And there it is. Why would he encourage kids to place in Groce's "system". We've hated it for four years.

This guy's entire life has been basketball and he knows a good system when he sees one.

He did say he likes Underwood's system.

That is what he said, but he's testing the NBA waters and doesn't have to make an official decision for quite awhile. He could always decide to transfer after he graduates. Easier to say he's coming back at this stage if he's actually on the fence.

You realize that most years 3rd-4th in the B1G is Top 20.

Not saying that I agree we will be there, just that it is essentially the same thing.

The pressure is on for a Chicago guy. There's really no excuse.

In my opinion, there is an excuse. I'm tired of all the Chicago politics and if Groce could get Chicago kids and pre Kansas Self was able to land some, then Underwood can, too, without bending to their every whim. He needs to get an assistant coach HE wants whether or not they are from Chicago and if the Irvins or whoever else don't want their players to come here then that's fine. I want Illinois to win ball games so ultimately, I don't care where the players come from.
