I don't blame Tilmon for requesting to get out of his contract, but this is a poor comparison. Underwood's contract allowed him an exit by paying OSU $3 million, which UI will reimburse.

And NCAA rules allow for Tilmon to ask for his release from his NLI. which recruits have every right to ask for, especially when there is a coaching change.

Tilmon has every right to ask out. If it wasn't for the retweet nobody would be questioning this decision. Should he have tweeted no but he is a kid. The coach who recruited him is gone let him explore his options. This is his life. While he is probably gone there is a small chance he stays. Either way we should not be surprised, this is what we expected when the coaching search began. Let's see how this staff can round out this class.

Then why reaffirm your commitment in person and then retweet your commitment? Only to walk back on it?

I think we have every right to criticize that, kid or not.

Yeah I am in this boat. I am not going to go after the kid on Twitter or IG, but I will certainly say on here that the kid did not handle this right at all.

I preface this with a this will never happen. However, it's too interesting not to at least dream about.

Mohamed Bamba the #3 Player in the nation who is still unsigned is a New York City kid who goes to school in Pennsylvania. Antigua as we know is also an NYC kid and coached high school ball in Pennsylvania. Recently Antigua started following Bamba's High school on Twitter. Almost certainly nothing but one can dream.

Ha, I have no idea what you are implying but I enjoyed it.

Curious to know what the series of pics are referencing.

Bummed at today's news. Curious to know how Underwood will fill glaring void at the 5 (not to be interpreted as I'm suddenly anti Tilmon now).

I know people are really excited about Kiir as a possibility to replace Tilmon. A lot of people feel like he is this immediate great fit in the system. There are some concerns. Kiir is raw. BU wants skilled guys to run this offense. His ability to run the court in transition is great. He can certainly get points that way on rim runs and tip ins. However, when we're in half court offense, what can he do? Can he step out to the 3? How is he with his back to the basket as he will be after he roll-posts? I'm sure he'll set great screens for our cutters, and Groce was recruiting him for pick and rolls, which he will get the opportunity to be in multiple times per possession. But what can he do from the elbow? Can he face up? Can he hit the elbow j? Can he make a move and score off the dribble from the elbow? The offense runs better when the guy at the high post is a threat to score, is kiir? If not, how long will it take for him to get there?

Honestly, yes, some of these questions were also posed on Tilmon. But he has a higher base level of skill than Kiir. Kiir will be good offensively in transition, screening, and has great potential defensively, but ultimately I don't know that he's the fit we all want him to be, as quickly as we need him to be.

Anyone else hear that Tilmon had actually asked out of his NLI before Cuonzo "visited his sister" and it wasn't granted thus the Insta post to help force the our hand?

Sounds like the ideal Mizzou rumor.

I like this article. He seems like a pretty strong Louisville lean but if we can get in there, ofter decent playing time.

And then we add:

"We also believe you will excell better at Illinois and strive to become greater. If you follow family you will strive to be as good as them; At the U of I, we believe you can strive to be even better than them"

Most here are happy with our new coach, who had a contract to coach another team but left that job to come here. So to be upset at a young man who is doing the same thing is kind of 2 faced. Till he picks another school I hope we still try to land him, but I hope we can go out and find the best players who want to be Illini. TF Da-Will, and J Pickett all want to be here, and I am very excited to have all 3. I would love to see us add 2 bigs. I would also like to hear coach's view on RS as I think both Da-Will and Pickett would both be good fits to RS but for different reason. I want Williams 110% healthy and football kind of shows us it might be better to sit a year and give it time. Pickett everyone compairs to Hill, and just think how nice it would be to have Hill comeing back as a 5th year sr, along with the countless guys we have seen sit and sit and sit but never RS only to have a good to real good last year, year and a half.

What rules are you referring to? One may ask out of the NLI for any reason, which may or may not be granted, but that's quite a bit different than having an exit clause in the contract.

The NLI is actually very specific about this:

Coaching Changes

I understand I have signed this NLI with the institution and not for a particular sport or coach. If a coach leaves the institution or the sports program (e.g., not retained, resigns), I remain bound by the provisions of this NLI. I understand it is not uncommon for a coach to leave his or her coaching position.

Maybe Tilmon finally saw video of BU's playing style and is unsure he wants to run that much. Maybe JG just got a job and JT wants to check it out. Maybe he just wants to be honest about checking out other schools and was feeling guilty about leading us on. While disappointed, for a kid his age it's understandable. Much better than the CA hat trick on national TV.

Lets lock up Okoro now so we can forget about Tilmon. I bet Antigua is gonna fill that hole with a JUCO player or something. I hope JT has some success wherever he goes but I wish these kids had a little more integrity these days!!! No way in hell my kid pulls this B.S. I was taught my word is my word. If your not 100% sure about your decisions then dont make a decision. I guess the ol school is out, new school shadiness/no honesty is the new norm. I'm done, good luck JT.

Dont stop recruiting Tilmon hes open and he may just hit it off with Antigua. Go hard after both Mir and Tilmon. Regardless of what happens to Tilmon I still think we get Mark Smith.

He never really seemed sure from the beginning about where he wanted to go. Maybe Underwood's style doesn't appeal to him. Perhaps a grind it out game (like Missouri) is what he's looking for. Aside from being passé, it's practically unwatchable. That style would hardly prepare you for the NBA.

Just a comment on 5 Star or Blue Chipper recruits in general. They leverage for every little bit they can. Part of me doesn't like this, another part of me says to treat them like professional athletes. Coaches and universities benefit plenty from getting star athletes on board. On this particular case, the young man gave his word multiple times.

I was thinking the same thing. However, if he wants his release from his NLI from Illinois, just tell BU he doesn't think he'd be a good fit with his style of basketball. Don't throw out the smoke screen via Instagram when a couple days earlier he recommitted to the Illini. Let's hope this doesn't start a domino effect with the other recruits. Finally, Cunzo Martin sniffing around when Tilllman was signed sealed and all but delivered doesn't set will with Illini fans.
