Fair enough and thank you, Ernst was recruited to "fill" a need for the Clones, they were his first major offer, why can't Bruninga be ours? Get them both, I would love to see them grow...3 years and 4 years pt here?

Understood. We disagree on Bruninga, but if he ends up at UI, I'll certainly support him.

Fair enough, Wooten is the stretch in that one....Bruninga would be a red shirt, Ernst would be a starter and better than the Maric option someone else suggested.

Frazier/Williams are locks so...

With 4 others: Badocchi, Ernst, Johnson, Smith is my revised...had forgotton the Johnson option, thanks:chief:

While I am not saying I am against recruiting Ernst, I think it's a big statement to say a guy with his JC numbers (not at all impressive) would leap frog Finke as a starter. I am sure he would find time in the rotation and a lot depends on who else we sign in the frontcourt, but I believe Finke, Black and Kipper will be filling major minutes at the 4/5, so unless we sign a frontcourt stud, I think whoever is coming in will be off the bench to spell Finke. Heck Finke's numbers were every bit as good as Ernst and Finke did it in the Big Ten and those numbers will only go up with Mav and Hill gone.

The point is WHEN Ernst got his FIRST major offer, NO ONE other than Iowa State was offering, and if they were, they were not HOLDING the offer for him. That is how he ended up there after his ACL injury.

In regards to Ernst, many feel as if Bruninga would not be a good offer for the ILLINI....the situations are similar really, with exception of the injury.

Both - Rated low by most, both recruited mostly by same type of schools, both have similar types of games

One has already been recruited by Underwood, the other?

One is already thought to be a great choice for us, while the other is not? Why not, if Bruninga goes somewhere is injured, goes JUCO, blows up, commits to Xavier then wants to come here, is he a great choice then?

People on here crack me up with rankings, level of kids, caliber of play (so thought) when most of us don't really know what the ILLINI need anway.

Point is if a scholarship is there, why not take a flyer on a kid like Bruninga?
If all pans out, he MIGHT end up being as good as we all think Ernst would be for us right now?
This is a fair point assuming you are not talking about play style.

To me Bruninga looks to be a 4 even if he keeps growing while Ernst looks to be a 5

Well, context matters. I don't know much about Iowa State's class balance/commits/etc. but if we can get to a place where Bruninga is a luxury/fill-a-need type of addition, great! I'm not sure we are anywhere near that position right now, though.

With Bridges returning to MSU (most likely), have our odds changed any with regards to Smith? I see it down to us and them, I can't decide if the needle moves our direction or theirs with this news.

I am all for taking a flyer on him if we cant find or land Bragg and others, heck I would still rather take a flyer on a kid out of high school then take a 5th year player.

I honestly do not see the big connection/influence of Bridges on Smith given that Bridges is a SF and Smith is a PG/SG. I also would not count UK out yet.

I agree with this as well. And I also would think the opportunity to play with Bridges would be appealing.

First off, Ernst when recruited by Iowa State had mid major offers: Ernst, who averaged 16.7 points and 12.6 rebounds per game as a senior at Clinton, had garnered offers from a number of mid-majors including Northern Iowa, Illinois State, Drake, Bradley and Stephen F. Austin among a number of others before committing to the Cyclones.

Secondly ERNST was recruited by SFA NOT Bruninga? Underwood would have been recruiting him...

Did you even read the links before commenting?

The Bruninga Bromance is strong with this one.

Appealing it is, but the appeal comes with less playing time, less scoring opportunities, and most likely not starting.

It all depends on what the kid wants.

I remember that our "new" Coach Groce was the key to the turnaround performances of Ibby, Shaw, Langford and Henry. :)

Yes, you can bet Izzo is selling him on how much he'll improve playing against the guys on next year's MSU team in practice and he'll still get some minutes. That team next year could easily make the FF. Then sophomore year, he'll be a main guy and still have studs around him.

because Bridges played the PF this year so moving to SF moves Lankford to the 2 taking a lot of the playing time for the 2 away . Smith will have a harder time seeing the floor vs the talent at MSU then at UofI

Besides the obvious of how great of a player Smith is, I would be so excited to have him, being a kid that has always loved Illinois. Pair that with Frazier's loyalty and excitement for the school and DaMonte's connection, it would be fun to have a team of kids with so much passion for the university.

I don't know about that. Given that most of our returning talent (TJL and JCL) is at PG/SG this is a similar situation. I think Bridges returning will have more of a potential negative effect on Tugs Bowen to MSU than on Smith.

There is a high appeal for someone like Smith at PG/SG to play for Izzo and MSU alongside Bridges.

Agreed, ONLY if a spot was open, maybe a preferred walk on offer?

If we burn a scholarship on Bruninga things will have gone very, very badly in recruiting for 17. It would signal we missed on lots of more talented targets, and frankly, if that is the case we are better off waiting and using the scholly for the 18 class. Don't see a scenario where a scholarship is extended there.

Yeah and he changed his prediction to Creighton as well.

Maybe we should make a late push...We are better than Creighton right? Bowen by all accounts wants to be the MAN, wherever he goes...he would be highest ranked player here, play a position of need, get plenty of minutes...jus sayin

Would have taken either one over Tate, maybe Williams, and certainly Thorne!

NOPE... Thorne -- 1 year of scholarship (originally) and before injury -- was good. 2nd year of scholarship was gravy

Tate -- maybe -- he played a position of need... we just needed him to be the backup...

We are talking about fringe / lower rotation guys... that take up 4 years of scholarship.

Unfortunately, that is probably the same value proposition for a lot of other places.

But I really can't see Bowen at MSU with Bridges returning.
