2017 Basketball Transfer Thread

Devil's Advocate: you could say that the staff pursuing Moore more aggressively may indicate them having been politely told by the Smith camp that doing so is wise.

Cal's Charlie Moore will transfer, per release. Long line for this one.

As someone said on another board, recruiting is not like a buffet (I'll add unless you're KY). If someone of the caliber of Charlie shows interest, you grab him and worry about the possible ramifications later. If Smith was so hyped on Illinois, he'd be here already and not playing footsies with Izzo and Cal.

Of the five guys I mentioned previously (Lucas, Frazier, Moore, Smith, Dosunmu), Moore and Smith are the two most dissimilar from each other and who would most obviously compliment each other in the same lineup.

I agree. But there are FIVE of them. And you left out Monte.

Ok, so of those six, three will probably be on the floor at a time, so dedicating 3/5 of your scholarships to those positions would be wise. 3/5 of 13 scholarships is 7.8.

(We're kind of backing into a pet theory of mine here, which is that 13 scholarships is too many and is driving both the concentration of talent among blue-bloods AND the exploding numbers of transfers. But that's a conversation for another day.)

Crazy

People here are crazy. You take Charlie Moore if you can get him. If we had him on last year's team, we'd likely have 4-5 more wins and been easily in the tourney, possibly a single digit seed.

As much as I'd love to get Moore, I believe he is Mizzou bound until proven otherwise. I'm actually a bit surprised some of the national pundits have mentioned us as a likelihood when the coach that convinced Moore to go away from home in the first place, is now close to his home. I hope I'm wrong, because it would be so nice to have a player like Moore.

Of course, maybe he realized the same thing that Jordan Mathews realized.

You can vanquish one - and only one - message board hobby horse. Do you choose:

- treating recruiting as if you were drafting a fantasy team

- evaluating coaches as if they were constructed via attribute points in a video game ("this guy's a 90 recruiting? whoa, only 10 left for in-game, bummer")

It is way more fun to pretend we can get whoever we want, and draft a fantasy team.

Absolutely Brad Underwood should take both if that's even an option. And I also think you take whoever jumps first if either and then worry about the rest.

I was talking about Smith's perspective. We have assumed all along that playing time at Illinois would be something in our favor when weighing our situation against MSU and UK. It's starting to look a little crowded with lead guards if Moore comes aboard. Granted, maybe Smith doesn't care who the competition is or perhaps it doesn't matter because Moore has to sit out. But... there is evidence Smiths are monitoring the situation...

Well I been called a lot worse then Crazy but I would rather we pass on him. He has to sit out a year, he does not play D, at least not in one game I watched , we have a lot more BIGGER needs, If we miss on Smith and who knows who else rather have the scolly for next year myself. I really didn't want him out of HS either though

Who knows what it means, but any way you slice it its a good thing for us right? It means we are right in the game and they are on top of the situation at Illinois. Who knows maybe it makes them wrap it up earlier than expected.

I'd be cautious with Moore. Chin will likely give us a shot, but I'd guess we have a better shot with Smith. Smith dragging this out for weeks is frustrating though. It's tough to sit on your hands while a kid visits other schools.

Moore is intriguing. He could play with TF, Da'Monte, and even Smith, but I don't think you could play him and TJL together. They're both facilitating guards that need the ball in their hands (although Moore is more of a score-first guy). For reference, here's how CM and TJL compare as freshman:

CM: 12.2 PTS, 3.5 AST, 2.9 TO, 41% 2PT%, 35% 3PT% - 26.8 USG%, 13.6 PER
TJL: 4.8 PTS, 3.1 AST, 1.6 TO, 42% 2PT%, 38 3PT% - 15.9 USG%, 10.9 PER

Moore had the ball in his hands from the start of the season at Cal. He also took a ton of shots (you could argue too many, CM: 349 FGA, TJL: 115 FGA). He has a scorers mentality, as opposed to TJL who is more of a set up guy.

If I were BU and co. I would have Chin make some calls to Irvin and others to gauge interest. If the interest is high, then I'd think about pursuing, if not, no harm done, we move on.

Moore is going to Missouri to follow CM IMO. One good thing is he takes up a scholarship position for a year while not playing.

Yeah, he very well might but he's played a year in the Cuonzo/Keady offense and has to be aware of what Evans did in Underwood's. I'm sure he knows Chin (and probably half the guys on our team) so he wouldn't be walking into a situation where he knew nobody.
Definitely not saying these are deal makers, but it does give me hope it's not just a straight transfer to be with Cuonzo again.
But if he's serious about being with his father every day, who I understand is still struggling with the stroke therapy, DePaul or -ugh- NW might be better choices for him.

Seems like its past that already.

What I read somewhere was that it's more an issue that his Dad can't fly because of health reasons, making him unable to see him play on the West Coast.

Chicago to Columbia, MO is quite a schlep, I've done that drive.

My wild speculation is that this is either all a pretext to follow Cuonzo, or Mizzou won't be in the picture at all. I don't forsee a UI vs Mizzou recruiting battle here.
