I grew up with Lee Hall on my TV. Hall is excellent by every measure, but I've been wowed by just how much Mattson breathes high school and college sports.

Lee sits back and coasts while Jim works his tail off. He is his own camera guy and gets to virtually every school within a 75 mile radius on game nights. ..just insane...

If Loren Tate is wrong, go easy on him. If he IS wrong he's going to get one hellava introduction to the speed and hatred that the social media interwebs can apply. Try not to be one of those people. I hope he's right.

Go :ah:

Loren Tate, one half of the long-time "Terrible T's," has been pissing people off since before you were born. I suspect he can handle some tweeters. He's got nothing to apologize for. Like others, I suspect he sourced his comment the old fashioned way - someone in the Athletic Dept. whom he trusts told him. At this stage in his lengthy career, he really doesn't know how else to do it. I doubt he'd be trying to cash in on unsourced rumor, but we'll see.

He truly is amazing that he is still at it at this age - he was a fixture of home-bias Illini reporting since my childhood, and as a Cubs fan, a mostly hated source of Cardinal-bias at the Gazette for years.

We don't get the benefit of Chicago media, but damn if Loren Tate isn't enough to take them all on by himself on our behalf. At least I'm sure that's how he sees it some days. He bleeds Orange and Blue, and some day we'll all be worse off without him. And I say that having been annoyed by his comments many times.

No question, but the list as a whole reads like the list for a guy who was a reach, which he wasn't. Smith averaged 27 pts and 17 rebounds for an outstanding AA basketball school. He was clearly a B1G level recruit. I think the list says a lot about how recruiting was more local vs. national in the old days.

That's exactly it. Much more regional and local back in the day than now. Not really any summer AAU as far as I can remember. Recruiting budgets weren't as large. No private jets to fly across the country to see a recruit. How we landed Derek Harper from FL back in the day, I'll never know... LOL

Snuck into the bakery over in Edwardsville last night and got a pic of the cake...

Woot woot!

I didn't come here to party
I didn't come here to stay
I came to leave with somebody. . .

I only came for the cake

I was sitting around a TV with my family. I don't remember why they were all in town. That might have been the first F-bomb I dropped in front of my parents. Took me almost 30 years before it happened.

I was at the office (when I was still on the East Coast) and pre-poured celebratory drinks for everyone on my team. I'll never drink before a commitment ceremony again.

I could not agree more. I grew up reading and listening to him and still listen to the WDWS podcasts.

For people that didn't see my earlier post - his source for the article is almost certainly a coach. Listen to the Sportsline podcast yesterday and judge for yourself: Link

He's not just guessing or basing it on some dude who saw a cake or Mark Smith wearing an Illinois jersey.

Still, this is recruiting so minds can change. He mentioned a couple of examples yesterday. Cliff told Groce he was coming the morning of the announcement. For the old timers who remember Russell Cross, he did the same thing to Henson before announcing for Purdue later in the day.

Congrats to Trent!

Thanks for posting that and definitely congrats are in order for Trent. Whatever happens in a couple hours, we are already ahead of the game for guards next year (not in any way trying to take anything away from MS). That list of young men on the first team for Florida HS bball is very impressive and it's really cool that Trent is part of that group.

I'm pulling for Tate on this one. And I have a gut feeling that he did it the right way, and in no way do I believe that he would just toss out a story without solid info to back it up. I feel that alone gives it some credibility.

Chicago media coverage of Illini sports is not only poor in quality, it's often so biased it's offensive.

Go :chief:

I don't do twitter so has anyone on the team besides Trent tweeted anything remotely positive to get our hopes up?

Kipper following Mark Smith is the only "Twitter activity" other than Trent that I have seen from the team.

I still think Jim Turpin and Loren Tate was the best announcing tandem for Illini basketball. Show's my age, I guess.

How did you find this? Do you actually drink this? By the way, back from self imposed timeout when JT backed out. Though been lurking. No cup tonight.

There was a time when my job required me to have a fairly deep working knowledge of bourbon-based cocktails. And yes, it's quite good - impress your friends at your next day-drinking opportunity.
