A couple of CBs went out way for Tutu Atwell who is currently committed to FAU:

He's only 5'8 and listed as an Athlete but I wonder if this could be the 2nd QB in this class?

He look so quick and fast on his tape I want him with the ball in his hands from any position. Looked up his track times here. https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=9300130#/L0

He runs a 10.84 100 and 22.21 200. Certainly fast, but not super fast by southern speeds, especially Florida. Might be small enough and "slow" enough to fall through the cracks to us and I'd be elated.

Fall through the cracks? What cracks? A 5'8 155lb athlete who is committed to FAU and his offers are not anything special.

For the big ten, his speed is special. It's extremely obvious what Lovie is prioritizing above all traits for skill guys. These are also the kinds of guys who move up on signing day when bigger programs lose their plan abc guys.

Illini already have commitment from a small slot receiver prospect, Carlos Sandy. Do we really need another small receiver?

No it is not FiveStar. It is good but the real heavy weight of the conference are in southern speed area code. 10.50 is still not exceptional when you get under that  that you are looking at elite speed. TOHS, MICH, and a few from PSu, Mich ST and alike but look at the numbers at the combine every year.
Takeittothehoop I think I would be looking for another slot guy as well really only have Dudek on the roster now. Frankly Sandy is one of my less favorite gets so if better option cames along of which there is about a half dozen I would have to look at how this team is filling out. One more thing there is only one burner on the team at receiver Unless Smith is as well. Just not sure on him. I would like 3 or 4 on the team every year . You know injuries and alike

The 4 teams you mentioned are all big ten east teams. I should have been more specific in referring to our division as I was in a previous post. I am in no way comparing him to tosu and mich guys. But looking throughout the Midwest, a 10.84 100 has you in the top 8 in every state, winning in some. The south is insane so if you're not sub 10.5 you need not apply as you say. I think for our division his speed/quickness combo can help us win games.

I still don't get why you aren't high on Sandy. I think he's going to be great.

One problem with that is we don't only play teams in our division. We what play 2 or 3 games a season against the eastern division. Plus should we start earning bowl games then it can be factor again. As a step forward it might be a very mild improvement but to be where we would like the team to be we need to aim higher

I had to go back to my notes on Sandy it has been awhile since I saw his tape. liked his hops, ability to track an and to adjust to the ball , that he wins battles against bigger defenders. However he needs 20 # of lean muscle added , his routes need to get better, which is standard. His speed to me slightly better than good to me. And needing 20# often comes with the loss of some speed so that is question to me. I felt the same about his quickness and burst. I would like to see more burst from a guy his size.
Net results what is he like after he gets to the playing weight he needs to carry for the conference. If he picks up what he needs to and adds speed which is also possible from s+c then he is what others expect. To me he is a bigger gamble then guys I believe are already much closer to being Big conference ready.

I agree in the big picture we need to be able to compete with all teams in our conference. I just think the first step is gonna be to compete/take over our own division first.

Baby steps. Win the B1G West in a couple years (and start getting an appearance in the championship game) and then we can get to "where we need to be."

Let's start with outpacing the weakest division in all P5 conferences.

I don't follow football recruiting nearly as much as hoops recruiting. Nevertheless, my take is that your take is spot on. We are bringing in a better caliber of players. Not the level we'd all like, but better. Win some more games than expected, hugely upgrade our player facilities and good things will happen. Turning around a really poor football program is the ultimate long game.

Lovie is already drawing better than we had in last 10 years. His presence will be enough to get recruits in, winning will bring in the big dogs. :illinois:
