You don't even need to have the schools or NCAA pay players. Just need NCAA to make it legal for kids to have their own sponsorship deals.

This such an easy step to help alleviate the problem that it probably won’t ever happen because people in charge appear to be morons.

I have been told that Tom Crean will not be in the mix to be the interim coach at Louisville. @WHAS11

This plus there were several jokes (at least I assume they were jokes) about Crean taking the Lville job and now this:

"Louisville booster wants former Indiana head coach Tom Crean to replace Rick Pitino"

Booster wishes to remain anonymous

I see some positives with this, but you still have potential of shoe cos. bidding on behalf of sponsored schools.

Sent from my VS500 using Tapatalk

How about we let them but the money stays in a trust and is only accessible after graduation.

At the moment the top players go to college until 'they are eligible/good enough for the draft.' If you want them to actually be students, this decision process needs to change. Lets separate the kids who want an education from those who are marking time until the paycheck.

Proposal: If you enroll in a college, you are not eligible to play in the NBA until your college class graduates (4 years).

.]

I like it. get 're done, NBA. (Hah.) (I still think the NCAA rule should be that if a kid goes pro early, his scholarship remains tied up until he would have graduated. You get five one-and-dones this year and next, you're going to be playing for a couple years with only a couple scholarship players.)

+1

NCAA just needs to get out of the way, but it's probably inconceivable to them.

Everyone knows (or should know) that this stuff happens all the time, everywhere...

I think it is just a matter of how much effort the FBI wants to put into this.

Still don't see why the NBA doesn't make a farm system and do everything just like the MLB.

Why should they when they've got everyone from the shoe companies to boosters to agents all paying their prospects for them.

Sorry if linked already. Love him or hate him, I found it interesting.

That guy is HILARIOUS!

“What am I gonna do with $200,000? After I've bought a car and paid some bills, I'm stuck right where I'm at. So $200,000 ain't gonna do nothing.”

Yup, every time $200 large falls into my lap, I think to myself, after I spend it, I'm right back where I started, so what was the point?

Can't fault logic like that

That we still have serious people doing the "these are the guys who do it right" thing means there is very little hope in college sports.

HAH - just read Bacon's bio. Teaches at NW and UM. Figures.

That's a bad idea. It would incentivize college coaches to lie to their players and tell them they aren't ready for the NBA and should stay in college.

Poor Kansas hasn't yet gotten the ink on their $191 million Adidas deal. I'm gonna guess that they just lost a lot of money.

From Sporting News (last paragraph):
"Adidas-sponsored University of Kansas told the Associated Press Thursday it is conducting an internal review of the program. The school recently agreed to a $191 million deal with the athletic apparel company but associated athletic director Jim Marchiony told the AP nobody implicated in the investigation was part of negotiating the 14-year-deal. The fourth-largest shoe and apparel deal in the NCAA has yet to be signed and could change following the FBI’s college hoops investigation."

"....until basketball and football players have what baseball and hockey players have had for more than a century, a viable minor league for those who want to be paid and don't want to be students, giving those athletes no option other than college sports will never work very well."

I think this is the best hoped for outcome. I HATE the idea of college players being paid in any fashion even if its above board in a 'free market' fashion/highest bidder. Is that what we signed on for as enthusiasts for college sports? Not me. If your coming out of highs school and you want to be paid for your services go to the minors/pros. If you want to be a student athlete and get an education while playing sports, go to college.

I am repulsed by the idea of universities in bidding wars for high school players in an open fashion as suggested. That would be the end of college sports for me.

I have always thought this was a good idea. But recently I am questioning what that would actually mean. If the NBA does this, they would need to seriously upgrade how they do the G league. And that would most likely be more $$ for guys in that league to keep them around to be developed. I'm guessing a lot of talent would roll the dice on going pro and making money, rather then College and not getting paid. Careful what we wish for I guess.

Players are protected by the fact that they can get feedback on their games from the NBA itself, completely disconnected from their coach. If they NBA thinks you're good enough, they will tell you, because they want good players on their teams.

It's possible the coaches themselves are in the dark, and not doing anything wrong. The programs/boosters are another matter. Every situation is different. It could be some recruitments are totally above board, and some are not. I tend to think the closer you get to the top-25, the more the black market takes over.

For clarity, when you say "top 25", are you meaning top 25 players or top 25 programs? I'm guessing players, but thought it was worth a question

I agree with this, but i think the best point of exposure is going to be in College basketball. Unless you get the NBA network, you don't have access to D-League games. but how many channels carry college basketball? I count 3 (ESPN, BTN, FSN) carrying Illinois games this year.

I also think the signing bonus would carry some weight for people as well, and i think you could increase that with a year of college. I believe that was a part of the reason for the one-and-done rule, to protect the NBA's money somewhat in that regard.

Like I said, I think the D-League COULD be that, but its got a long way to go.

Sorry if someone posted this but its been reported to be Padget according to ESPNU

not sure if that is official though

getting there.

All signs pointing to David Padgett as Louisville interim coach. Guess who repped Padgett when he was a player? Yep, Andy Miller.

Couldn't agree more. But it seems you and I are in the minority for actually wanting college athletics to be about college first and athletics second. And the cynical "there's too much $ involved so will never happen," while potentially true, is a flawed argument in principle. Ultimately, the schools don't really get the $ (which I don't understand), it stays within the DIA (which is why you can afford to pay Harbaugh $9M/yr while making a fraction of the revenue). It subsidizes the other sports, pays for some fancy gyms, and that's about it. If the schools really wanted to change it, the financial incentive to not do so isn't as strong as some make it out to be, imo.

Participation in women's sports would still be available in my scenario. Noting would be changed

I'm no lawyer, but pretty sure Title IX is (among other things) about gender equity. Paying men and not women will not fly. Revenue aspect of that is irrelevant wrt to the law.
