So is this late push comparable to last year? Obviously it isn't over yet, but I know a lot of people felt that we needed to close like last year in order to keep up the appearance in regards to recruiting.

This isn't a perfect comparison, because I'm not sure if there is ranking inflation from 247/Rivals/ESPN, but this class should be on par, or slightly better, than last year's class:

2017 :illinois: Recruiting Class
Cumulative Points: 185.24* (Actually is 183.92 after removing Lawson, who never made it to campus).
Total Recruits: 27* (26)
National Ranking: 46* (49)

2018 :illinois: Recruiting Class
Cumulative Points: 158.79* (If Illinois adds Verdis Brown, Reuben Unije, and Dayven Coleman, jumps up to 179.99)
Total Recruits 16* (Last I heard, Illinois is planning on finishing this class around 24)
National Ranking: 62* (Would jump to 39 with above-mentioned commits)

Another potential boost would be if/when 247 provides a ranking for Kerby Joseph. Wouldn't be a big boost, but a nudge regardless. TL:DR version: If Illinois is able to get Brown, Unije, and Coleman, it is very likely this class will be slightly better than last year's. Comfortably better if they also get Craddeith.

A REALLY interesting tweet from Joe Fotu:

https://twitter.com/4TWOz/status/941351939597578240

This would have to be if reference to Merlin Robertson:

https://247sports.com/Player/Merlin-Robertson-85411

Does anyone know if Merlin has ever visited us, unofficially? This seems too good to be true.

Whoa...

What's the connection between that tweet and Robertson? Besides the geographical connection? Could it have to do with Dylan Hall, the 2019 CA TE that was just offered?

Thanks for the breakdown. I don't particularly like having to wait until the end to get commits, but if it works...

It should be interesting here the last few days before signing day.

That it should, but, remember, this is the early signing period. Silly season/musical chairs doesn't really begin until January. FWLIW, am guardedly optimistic the staff will finish strong.

The Poly reference and the fact that Robertson retweeted it.

I'm not getting my hopes up but it's interesting....

His highlights are unreal:

I am getting my hopes up

I think we are well about the 50/50 line right now, but as well all know things can really change fast in recruiting.

I also think this class is going to round out to be better then last years as far as the ranking go. But again if Lovie and staff find those gems like B Williams and Gay in this class who knows how good it could be

Has he ever visited us? I would be more confident about this if we had at least had him on campus before.

According to this article from September of 2015, he had an Illinois offer, which means that his offer could date back to when TB was still the Head Coach!

I can't find much else that connects us to him so this really comes out of nowhere.

The kid is indeed a beast, but I would put my money on USC.

I know nothing. But my take on the tweet is that he is going to the Polynesian bowl and there are a lot of potential recruits.

And anyone that retweets it, I would take to mean they are Polynesian.

Having said that, the people commenting are the people that I search for and trust their info.

But I think we would hear more about the potential recruits if there was great news on the horizon. I hope I am wrong.

Both kids from Junipero Serra are Hardy Nickerson guys. He has an 'in' there but neither of them are signing here in December.

Serra H.S. is an historically high-quality program. I believe that they have won two State Championships over the past ten years in their mid-sized school division, and have dozens of kids to P5 programs. The pipeline to USC has been strong in recent years, including kids like Adoree Jackson, Marquise Lee, George Farmer, Rasheem Green, John Houston and others.

Damn it would be nice for the Illini to have a football factory like this sending us 2 or 3 kids every season. :(

Well that changes things. I just thought he was randomly liking it just because it was a Polynesian Bowl thing. Apparently he actually has some interest. Although, it's yet to be seen how much interest.

A certain 4 star LB looks like he is visiting again this weekend as well. Maybe 3 times a charm?

Is this an unofficial visit? I was assuming one of the two visits he made during the season was official?

He was on campus at least twice this Spring as well. It's amazing that we can get a guy on campus this much but not get him to commit.
