I can't read the article, but the Stepinac tweet linked above claims its for "New York State"

The ranking is for the State of New York. Griffin played for Stepinac High School in White Plains, a suburb just North of New York City.

Archbishop Molloy- where Brown plays- is actually in NYC- so that would make no difference. I’ve seen a bunch of NYS rankings- none of them have Griffin sniffing close to #1.

Well, I'm very happy to have him as an Illini no matter if he is # 1 or not....

This class is great and the addition of CR would make it awesomely great !

Tate definately said Ramey is visiting Thursday. Either way, the Illini should land either Ramey or Feliz by Monday. Another point Loren made was that Alan Griffin has to be better than a 3 star if he is the best player in NY State.
I think best player and higher ranked means two different things. I think that Jalen Brunson was the player of the year in college this past year, but if I have the number one pick, I'm taking Bagley.

If Ramey doesn’t commit before this weekends visit from Feliz he will be out of luck.
If he wants to be an ILLINI the time is now.
From a class balance stand point I would be very happy with Feliz.

+1

Does anyone really think that class balance means anything now? There are very few really good players that stay at one school for four years. I think this class, if they all sign could be the most important class in many years as it could return the Illini to respectability and help future recruiting.

Until Illinois starts getting regular players going pro early I do think it makes a difference. Right now we have SOOOO many players that will be Fr/So next year.

If there are a bunch of transfers or declarations it doesn't matter, but you can only plan for what you know, not every possibility that might happen.

Not for the few dozen or less who can reload with great classes year after year. For all the rest, yes is very important and having this balance and talented Seniors is a big reason why parity exists at the level it does now.

I think the point here is that he is not rated properly.

Let’s take a closer look at Alan and how he did with competition equal or better than anything in the State of Illinois, and you can decide for yourself what to think.

Griffin’s team Archbishop Stepinac won the Triple Crown in the State of New York:

2018 NY State ‘AA’ Federation Champions
2018 NY CHSAA ‘AA’ City Champions
2018 NY Archdiocesan ‘AA’ Champions

Team finished ranked #11 in the United States for all high school teams.
In the Northeast United States they finished ranked #5

Stepinac vs. Molloy (Queens, NY) (Moses Brown, UCLA commit and Khalid Moore, Georgia Tech commit)
2/6 Stepinac W 89-76. Alan Griffin had 18 pts.
3/8 Stepinac W 88 to 84. Alan had 31 points.

Stepinac vs. Iona (Rochelle, NY) (Bryce Wills, Stanford commit and Souleymane Koureissi, Richmond)
1/5 Stepinac W 82-78, Alan had 26 pts.
2/2 Stepinac L 67-75, Alan had 24 pts.
2/20 Stepinac W 75-58, Alan had 16 pts.

Stepinac vs. Long Island Lutheran (Brookville, NY) (Frankie Policelli, not committed)
1/7 Stepinac L 72-79, Alan had 22 pts.
3/23 Stepinac W 76-72, Alan had 18 pts.
2/20 Stepinac W 75-58, Alan had 16 pts.

NY CHSAA Archdiocesan Championship vs. Cardinal Hayes out of the Bronx, Alan had 29 pts.
NY CHSAA ‘AA’ City Championship vs. Christ the King out of Middle Village, NY, Alan had 20 pts.
NY State ‘AA’ Federation Champions vs. South Shore of Brooklyn, NY, Alan had 28 pts. Alan was awarded the MVP of the tournament.

Class balance doesnt prevent you from having great seniors. There's over 2 transfers a year per team. It's not important. If we have 6 freshmen now, they aren't all going to be seniors on the same team together.

Yeah, wasn't really talking about us, just in general about class balance and its effect on the landscape of CBB, but yeah I get it. I hope we have 6 Freshmen if Ramey is #6. Other than him, Feliz and a grad transfer would be fine.

Good data above on Alan Griffin against legit competition.

Frankly, I couldn't care less whether 247 or Rivals or whoever updates their rankings. It doesn't make him any more or less valuable of a prospect.

What's probably elevating his profile in some circles (such as the site that ranked him tops in NY State) were his performances late in the season. He essentially carried one of the better HS teams in the nation down the stretch. That 31 point performance against Moses Brown and a very good Molloy team was an eye-opener, and then his run in the NY playoffs was a great way to end the year.

Regardless, he gives us some length and the ability to hit outside shots......that will add value to this roster. Beyond that.....meh, couldn't care less about whether he's #1 in NY or #7 or #10.

On Griffin, I think it's a matter of being the "best player in NYC" vs. the "best prospect in NYC". With Griffins production, accolades & being the best player on the best team in the state that is where the rankings comes in.

Kind of like how Jordan Goodwin was widely considered the "best player" in Illinois even though Tilmon was definitely the "best prospect"

Totally understand your point. But I'd say that Goodwin has thus far proven to be the better prospect as well :)

Look a Nova the past 5-7 years. A model of class balance. 2-3 move on at the end of a good year, and everyone else comes back.

I think various viewpoints is part what makes this board good and bad. So I'm not going to say Griffin or Ayo are the best players in their home state or are overly athletic.

I will say that Jones, Ayo, and Griffin have proven they belong with the most elite talent in the US. They can shine at times going against this talent, but you are never left wondering if they belong against these players.

Giorgi played with top talent and against talent, I'm think he is at the cusp of saying he can be in a game of top 50 players and not know that he is top #250.

These players fill a need and have tools that will fit a system. Some of our shortcomings last year was poor shooting, average athleticism, size, finishing at the rim, defending the rim/interior. With this class, BU has gone a long way in addressing these issues.

This has me extremely excited no matter who else comes on board!:thumb:

Official 217Sports 2018 Class Ranking

Ago Dosunmu - :chief::chief::chief::chief::chief::illinois:
Five Chiefs and a Block I. Because five. And Illinois.
Tevian Jones - :chief::chief::chief::chief::illinois:
Four Chiefs and a Block I because he's long like an I.
Alan Griffin - :chief::chief::chief::chief:
Four Chiefs because four is more than three.
Samba Kane - :chief::chief::chief::shield:
Three Chiefs and a Shield because he'll protect the rim. Eventually.
Giorgi Bezhanishvili - :illinois::illinois::illinois::illinois::illinois:
Five Block I because he has five "I's" in his name.

The science and analytics behind these rankings is irrefutable and indisputable. Because I just made it up.
Discuss.:D
