Archbishop Molloy- where Brown plays- is actually in NYC- so that would make no difference. I’ve seen a bunch of NYS rankings- none of them have Griffin sniffing close to #1.

Don’t care about ranking. He’s a shooter that makes shots, a missing piece this year.

I think the point here is that he is not rated properly.

Let’s take a closer look at Alan and how he did with competition equal or better than anything in the State of Illinois, and you can decide for yourself what to think.

It calls to mind Mike Epstein to an extent. Enormous production against the very best high school competition on an elite team. He was voted the best player in Florida (or perhaps it was just South Florida, football talent hotbed either way), but you still wouldn't have taken him over the multitude of 5-stars available. It was a high school honor, though one that spoke about his production and qualities as a player.

The difference of course is that Epstein jumped off the screen on film (plus had a multitude of Power Five offers), as well as the unavoidable skin color subtext in his case.

I wish Griffin the best and if he's as advertised as a shooter there's always going to be minutes for him. But he is properly rated at present.

Official 217Sports 2018 Class Ranking

Ago Dosunmu - :chief::chief::chief::chief::chief::illinois:
Five Chiefs and a Block I. Because five. And Illinois.
Tevian Jones - :chief::chief::chief::chief::illinois:
Four Chiefs and a Block I because he's long like an I.
Alan Griffin - :chief::chief::chief::chief:
Four Chiefs because four is more than three.
Samba Kane - :chief::chief::chief::shield:
Three Chiefs and a Shield because he'll protect the rim. Eventually.
Giorgi Bezhanishvili - :illinois::illinois::illinois::illinois::illinois:
Five Block I because he has five "I's" in his name.

The science and analytics behind these rankings is irrefutable and indisputable. Because I just made it up.
Discuss.:D

Ranking system I can definitely get behind. By far the number one class in the world.

Balanced class with huge upside. Step 1 recruiting gets an A. Next step is development.. I have no faith in freshman but probably because we haven't a record for development. LB's progress and TF's year give me hope. Still puzzled by MS's year after much praise by BU. Was his talent misjudged or was his recruitment a PR move to raise confidence in the staff. Always looked a step slow to me but believe he has scoring ability with a team playing a different defense.

I know we all need to temper our expectations for next year but sometimes I wonder why. Next year we add a 5 star guard with TF who was an All B10 freshman. How many B10 teams do you guys feel will have a better backcourt than us next year?
I wouldn't be shocked either if Kipper is our leading scorer next year. He gets fouled often and shoots FTs very well. We just need one or two more guys inside to pop.

This is a guard dominated game now and if we have shooters and long rebounds who knows. It's not like it used to be. The three point line needs to be backed up but with our guards I'm glad it's not yet.

Good data above on Alan Griffin against legit competition.

Frankly, I couldn't care less whether 247 or Rivals or whoever updates their rankings. It doesn't make him any more or less valuable of a prospect.

What's probably elevating his profile in some circles (such as the site that ranked him tops in NY State) were his performances late in the season. He essentially carried one of the better HS teams in the nation down the stretch. That 31 point performance against Moses Brown and a very good Molloy team was an eye-opener, and then his run in the NY playoffs was a great way to end the year.

Regardless, he gives us some length and the ability to hit outside shots......that will add value to this roster. Beyond that.....meh, couldn't care less about whether he's #1 in NY or #7 or #10.

He really gives us a great shot at his brother also if he does well with us, as well as future recruiting ground to stand on in NY!:chief:

You don't NEED to temper your expectations. But you'll get slapped around by the Realism Mafia and labelled a Koolaid Drinker if you aren't careful.

Anyone else surprised Trice is that far down on the list? I like his highlights. Seems to have some hops and a nose for both the basketball and the basket.

Because he can't make free throws and has no offensive game, except put backs on rebounds. He's perfect if you have a loaded team, and you need a guy to come in a get a couple of rebounds, but that's not us at this point.

Underwood wants guys that can score, rebound, pass and make free throws.

You can make a living on rebounding, defense, and put backs - Just ask Dennis Rodman. I'm not comparing him to Rodman, but I'm just saying there are plenty of folks with free throw deficiencies and limits to their offensive game who are playing professionally.

I can take a punch! Lol..seriously though, I think we will have one of the best backcourt next year and also that Kippers way undervalued by most people.

I agree, but you need a winning team surrounding you. Dennis always had winners around him, allowing the team to take that risk.

At this point, we can't.

We need a player who can rebound, has an offensive game, and can make free throws when it counts.

I'm not surprised by it. I think high flying dunks are over rated. He is not a good shooter and awful from the free throw line. We just watched the final four. How many players threat of a mid range shot didnt at least being guarded outside.

Isn't that Ebo next year more or less? Plus he is kind of new to the game and likely has more potential so I hope we pass on Trice.

Illini fans should know the downside of having offensively challenged players by now...

Kipper's habit of taking the ball to the rim and then turning his back on the rim and D and/or throwing up a wild shot has to be fixed. I really like the potential, and hope he can pull it all together game after game.
