This isn’t true. He has been a knockdown shooter in games. Sure his percentage went down during B10 play but that doesn’t he wasn’t that for at least part of the year.

He was the #1 three point shooter in the nation in the non-con.
The problem was that once the conference play started and the opponent D could sag off of the others, AJ couldn't get the openings he needed to continue to score. If we have more offensive from others, we'll get more from AJ as well.

Draining threes against East Nowhere State is one thing. If you want to call him a knockdown shooter, he needs to do it in conference play. Last season, he absolutely killed it in the nonconfence portion of the schedule, but in conference play, he hit his threes at a rate of 32.6%. That is not enough if your game is built around the three-ball, and it certainly isn't "knockdown."

I checked BTN listings for about 5 days after this game (basically just scrolled through) and there was no listing for this game. There was a program called something like, Student U which I presume is a student production which these BTN+ games are usually. But that is all it says. No indication of what the program is so it could be that. But I doubt it. Last year BTN did not re-broadcast any Illinois BTN+ games. I don't think they do that anymore. But maybe Illinois wasn't a priority and they broadcast other teams' BTN+ games. I don't know, I just know, or pretty sure no Illinois BTN+ game was re-broadcast on regular BTN
BTN sucks!

Nah. You are changing the definition mid discussion. You said (paraphrasing): he needs to show it in games and he has only shown it in practice.

The reply was he has shown it in games and your response was the games he has shown that ability are not good enough. That is not a fair argument.

I feel like he also forced some things in conference play, largely because he felt he needed to. Hopefully, this year he will only need to take what the D gives him and with Ayo and Trent able to penetrate and kick he will get more cleaner looks.

That's a fair point, but I'd argue my core point still hold. He needs to do it consistently in games, for a whole season, and against our top competition. He hasn't shown that yet. I hope he does this year, but he hasn't so far. For that reason, I don't think we can count on him with any certainty to be a true weapon for the whole season. We can only hope that it finally all falls into place for him, and it might. Based on reports of his work ethic and attitude, it couldn't happen to anyone more serving.

For the record, this was my original point. It hasn't all come together yet for AJ, but if it did it would be really huge for this team.

Completely agree. Throw the semantics about the argument aside he hasn't shown he can be a knockdown shooter in big games when the scouting report on him is out there. Elite shooters find a way to get them off. I want nothing more than AJ to be a star of this team but we haven't seen it yet. Him being a quality 3 and D guy with 3-4 boards a game in B1G play changes this team big time.

WSE need AJ to become the next Luther Head. Three and D and a little athleticism......

I agree with you that AJ hasn't shown elite shooting in conference but I think Paign also makes a good point. By the time they got around to conference play, everyone knew how to defend us and our opponents could sag off too many players. With our increased athleticism, I think that happens less this year even in conference play and AJ get more looks. Plus, you know he's been practicing shooting all summer and fall with a hand in his face.

Like seeing Adonis teach. Kane does have some happy feet though..
He needs to clean up the footwork for sure. But I would guess anyone working on new movies like that would. But I was impressed with how quick Kane was on a few of those moves. Get the footwork down and he could make some slower bigs look silly on that quick spin move.

Ha, that was the first thing I noticed. Great that he has a mentor that seems to understand position and moves, but getting those things into muscle memory is gonna take a while...like multiple seasons.

Can't speak for AJ obviously, but when your team struggles as much as ours did, you tend to push it, and that's my 2 cents as well. I think it's normal for a player who knows how to play within his game to go outside his comfort zone and see a drop, only to come back better. Fun fact, Luther head varied pretty widely over his career, but as a senior shot 41% from 3. I think AJ will benefit from more buy-in, better looks, personal improvement, and more scoring options from guys kicking it out. I find it hard to predict what this team will do, but I think we'll see a noticeable improvement in running BU's system.

I really have a bad feeling about tonight. The Illini always are the best in bringing out the pessimist in me (not that it's very hard).

My understanding is that these scrimmages are not usually strictly 40-minute true game type scenarios. Who knows.

Nobody got hurt, that's the important thing. That's the important thing for tonight too.
