I think there's no question now that Lovie is back. Not just the win, but he seemed much more engaged on the sidelines. That ain't a guy planning to quit.
Yes. Only question is why it didn't happen sooner.Do we think Lovie taking more control of the D made the difference today? Do you think he was deferring to Hardy and that was part of the problem?

This is what would happen if the man hired to fire you was worried you'd beat your in-state rival.Man it would be weird to be fired like 3 weeks early.

Minnesota just fired their DC. That's what happens when you give up a double nickel to Illinois.
Dunning Kruger and the Peter Principle. Look em up.Not sure how PJ has been able to get to where he is at, but this won’t be the last coach he throws overboard before he and his over the top personality go down as well.
Tough to say why we had been operating with a different approach and how that was operating through the coaching staff, but it wasn't just play calling that was different yesterday.
Yes we blitzed more, but it wasn't like we hadn't blitzed at all previously. What was really noticeable was that our D-linemen were coming off the ball low and hard and the linebackers were getting downhill and attacking their gaps. And everybody was recovering and swarming to the football at a much higher level of awareness and effort than in previous games.
Personnel may play more of a role than we realize. Tony Adams and Nate Hobbs were back, and as soon as they sat back down to put in the backups late in the game there were a couple late coverage messes.
Calvin Avery also had a monster game, which if that is the new normal we're in great shape.
Reading through other boards it seems Minnesota fans have wanted this for a while. Arkansas fans complained about very similar things as the Minnesota fans. Idk if this one is necessarily on Fleck. Not sure how PJ has been able to get to where he is at, but this won’t be the last coach he throws overboard before he and his over the top personality go down as well.
No question until someone questions whether he'll be back after the next blowout loss.I think there's no question now that Lovie is back. Not just the win, but he seemed much more engaged on the sidelines. That ain't a guy planning to quit.

If they are questioning whether or not Lovie will be retained then they don't understand how big of a buyout he has if he's fired before January 31, 2019.
It's $12 million if he's fired before January 31, 2019 which is why him getting fired this year was never going to happen. They could have gone 0-12 and Illinois wasn't going to pay him that much money to go away. If he resigns then I think he owes Illinois money.
It drops to $4 million if he is fired before January 31, 2020 but that is more doable. It's still a lot of money but if he can't get to a bowl game next year then Illinois needs to move on.

Find a way to get the defense back to what we saw last year and they should be able to get to a minor bowl game with the way the offense is playing. I don't care how they do it. Get graduate transfers, JUCOs, whatever. You have to show recruits that this program is improving otherwise no one will want to come here and recruiting isn't that great right now anyways.
I think you can stick with Lovie at DC and save some money that way. People forget that Lovie was the DC for last year's Indiana game since Nickerson missed that game for health reasons as well. If Illinois had a remotely competent offense for that game then they could have won as they were just trading punts in the first half. Go out and hire two ace recruiters and let them coach the LBs and the CBs/NB.
Next year's schedule looks tough with Michigan and Michigan State on the schedule.
Yeah, there is no excuse for next year why we can't find 6 wins at a minimum, especially if we are where we should be with respect to the rebuild. I think we should be challenging the middle of the pack B1G teams next year and SHOULD be able to sneak out a surprise victory or two against teams that nobody thinks we should beat. While Michigan and Michigan State are tough and their presence makes a bit of a mockery of the "parity-based scheduling" idea the B1G office has been claiming, I don't think describing it overall as a "tough schedule" is right at all.
There are pretty much four absolute layups there. If you can't find 6 wins on a schedule like that, you're probably around the high 70's in advanced stats at the absolute highest, in layman's terms you aren't very good.
It's true though that 2020 is even easier still.
If Lovie doesn't work out, Guentheresque scheduling will not be an excuse for why. The B1G West is as soft as any division in the country and our non-conference schedules are very favorable for the foreseeable future. The bar is not that high.

The one coaching change I wish didn't happen is Mike Phair. I thought he was crushing it at the college level. I doubt he would be on his way back, but any thoughts on this?
No more clutching at shiny objects for "buzz" or whatever.
