Illinois 62, Penn State 56 POSTGAME

I’m late to the party and I haven’t read all the comments so forgive me if this is been discussed. A lot is being made of chambers saying Ayo goes right and then he burned them for the game winner going left. I think forcing him left is the proper game plan against him. The difference being, especially on the 2 plays in the tweet from the main page, is what you make him do after the initial force.

The first play in that tweet he lobs to kofi for a layup. Problem there is not with the on ball defender. It’s with the help imo. If you’re forcing someone to their off hand they’re usually gonna do 1 of 3 things: pass, pull up, or cross back to their strong hand. You sit on those 3 options and force them out of control to the rim, you might have something. On the floater the defense forced him left then let him get back to his right hand for the shot. If you’re truly forcing someone you gotta sit on that takeaway hand.

Easy to say, hard to do. You sit on his left, he fakes right and crosses you over and you're left in the dust....game over.

On that last play (and it's freaking genius if it was on purpose) is the "sort-of" screen Trent sets right before Ayo makes his move.

I'm guessing BU knew they would be overplaying Ayo to force him left. But the defender is only shading him at first. Basically saying, "I'll give you your left, but I'll be able to stay on/in front of you as you drive left to the hoop."

Once Trent goes up to (maybe?) set the screen/fake screen you can see the defender not just shade but angle himself as if he is about to have to fight over the top of a screen. To do this, he has to angle himself even more to make sure Ayo won't be able to rub him into the screen and get around him for the easy lay-up/assist.

In the 1 second where the PSU player on Trent probably said "SCREEN LEFT" to the player on Ayo, and the player on Ayo started the motion to re-position to keep from getting stuck on the screen, Ayo makes his crossover.

It's a thing of beauty. The PSU player is still reacting to the idea of the screen when Ayo pushes in for the almost untouched drive to the hoop. I'm guessing tired legs had something to do with the defender not being able to react quick enough but it was so BANG, BANG, BANG that I don't know if he would been able to recover if it was in the first 10 seconds of the game.

I think it also helped that Ayo made a motion like he was about to go right to sell the idea of a screen. The PSU guy simply had no chance with all this stuff working against him.

One of the first things I noticed when I moved to Florida is you no longer see the farming ads. Back in the day it was also State Farm Insurance.
Phosphate and State Farm are modern commercials...you ever heard of Chesty Potato Chips? The food its fun to eat!!!

Certainly, was more of a tongue in cheek comment and daydreaming of how dominant we would be if we could combine the two(or even something close on O). Same with the fantasy of our potential offense if AYO stays next year and Miller still comes along with the shooting of transfers Hutch/Grandison.

Not sure Oklahoma States offense ever had a 7'0", 280 lb center anchored in the middle and this team isn't a particularly good shooting team. He changed his defensive philosophy and has tweaked his offense to best suit his roster.

I for one enjoyed seeing the team wear their jerseys, not some other old, dead basketball players jersey from a bygone era. These kids need to establish their own identity and that comes in part from wearing their own jerseys to play their games, not last century's games. Just my humble you know what.

That was fun. Thanks for sharing. (And having complained about the camera work on the other video posted, I should mention I liked the camera work used here a lot better. I can see players movement in relation to one-another's much more clearly.)

From across DC this afternoon, agree to disagree about this. I'm delighted that they've resurrected those late '70s script jerseys this season and use the '80s/early '90s jerseys regularly, particularly the latter in orange (which Lou began in the late '80s; before then they were strictly home white and away blue.) Indiana has never had a problem with "old, dead jerseys," nor has UCLA, Kansas, UNC, and Duke (by and large), and I respect that these programs haven't constantly rebranded themselves as other schools have. Michigan's Block-M jerseys from the 60s and '70s are still the best ones they've ever had. The script Ohio State jerseys from the late '70s and '80s are still the best ones they've had. Purdue had much better jerseys in those years than they've had since, particularly when they wore gold in the '70s. Ditto MN and Iowa. Wisc and NW togs were always dull and uninspired. MSU: can't be arsed to have an opinion.

Frankly, I don't care for the current Illinois hoops jerseys and lettering style. Happy to mix them up to please the fans, however. Would be happier if they wore the old designs much more often than they do. I suspect the DIA marketing people know something about this that we don't, and that we'll see those script unis regularly. Could do without seeing navy road unis more than once in a great while. I've never been a huge fan of orange but orange basketball unis are strong in a way football ones aren't. IMHO. As a romantic, middle-aged dude.

This 30 something woman agrees. Those 70 script jerseys are absolute fire

Here's some of what I'm talking about. I want to see Kofi rocking the Gophers' Mychal Thompson's Bahamas necklace c. 1975. I'm so old that I actually saw the guy play in person wearing it (with his sidekick there, Flip Saunders.) And I want BU in Jim Dutcher's checked trousers. With a matching sports jacket having a six-inch wide lapel. All in orange. A man can dream.

And is that #32 Levi Cobb stuffing Ronnie Lester in Iowa City while modelling those sweet orange script Illinois unis?

Wish I could find a photo of these orange script unis in color. Love me some Derek Harper:

There are a lot of things to hate Rick Pitino for, but for some reason I have it in my head that his rise to prominence is why coaches no longer wear flammable team-colored jackets anymore. It wasn't just Lou who wore them, it was pretty much everyone, and it was hilarious.

The proliferation of plaid slacks and jackets among coaches in the '70s was truly hideous. Lou's outfits were actually sedate compared with, say, pre-Adidas red sweater Bob Knight (and, yes, I do believe that's Gene Bartow with him below. Thank goodness he skipped town and gave way to Lou.) I can't recall Lou wearing a plaid jacket. Orange, yes. Plaid, no. Please don't prove me wrong about that. My illusions are all I have left.

And God bless Larry Brown. His mid-'70s stint as Nuggets head coach (in the old ABA) yielded this fabulous outfit that I still remember from Sports Illustrated as a kid. I seriously recall a photo of him in overalls on the bench chewing on a long blade of grass.

Sorry to bust your bubble but, here's Lou from the 1979 basketball poster.

bold: This doesn't make much sense in terms of script. What's "old, dead" and bygone is the material used.
