Wow. Nice scout. Sounds comparable to 2018-19....and that start didn't go to well. Hoping our roster is in a better place this time around.
BU said he wanted the team to get old and we certainly are on that track. Three frosh, three sophs, three jrs, two redshirt jrs, two srs. (assuming Ayo gone) Should make getting off to a fast start much easier. Has talented frosh but experience at the same positions, which he hasn’t had before. Should enable much more varied offensive and defensive schemes. With multiple scorers it may be difficult for opponents to prepare.

Maybe BU meant chronologically, if so both Hutch and Grandison turn 22 in April.

Looking at scheduling for next year looks like we going to have a stretch 6 big games in a row. Nov 27-29 we play 2 of Florida, Iowa St or Oregon. Then Big Ten/ACC challenge is Dec 1-3. Then early Big ten is Dec. 5-6 then Dec 8-9. Then we play Arizona on Dec 12.

Seems like a good year to bring back the United Center game against a big time opponent. If we do well with the games above we could be a top 10 team by the end of December, which is when the UC game should always be scheduled.

Don't know if a transfers thread needs to be started, but former target Landers Nolly (VaTech) will be transferring.

Unless BBV, one of the two sit outs, or a grad transfer comes in that can succesfully guard the 4 position, I don't see us taking a major leap. Maybe another offseason for Giorgi will help too.

DMW is probably going to start, and given his late season offense, I'm all for it. BU was committed to playing him when he had 0 pts for like 2 months. If he's scoring at any clip, he's getting minutes. Frazier is a probably starter too, I foresee regression to the mean for him--at the very least. Assuming Kofi stays, he's your 5. So that leaves two starter spots open.

I'd love to see one of the above take that 4 spot. But I also dont think BU is afraid of starting 4 guards. Betting now, Griffin takes one of those spots. It's hard for new comers to crack rotations, and BU has shown a stubbornness to trot out the old guard more often than not (whether or not that's a net positive or negative is another conversation all together.) Assuming that's true, I don't think Curbelo or Miller crack the starting rotation, but I still think Miller has a better shot since his skillset is more desired. He might be next year's Griffin, and Curbelo next years Feliz.

Not having freshman instantly start is a good thing. This team is deeper and more talented than we've had in almost 15 years. Good problems ahead determining PT.

What would you define as a major leap? This season was a tale of two halves. We started so slow and then figured it out.

So if next year we simply maintain what has been built and avoid the slow start, wouldn't that already be a major leap?

Can we maintain the kind of late game heroics Ayo provided? Doubtful.

To me, this team had the talent to beat anyone in the B1G any given day. I still think we underperformed. Our shootings gotta get better, we need someone to stretch the floor. I think a major leap would be a top 15 team next year. We're losing a lot of experience, it's unfair to expect the sit outs and Miller/Curbelo to fill all of that right away. It definitely could happen, but this team isn't primed to take a leap without some guys performing outside their expectations. No reason to think this team next year couldn't be better, I think they will fall very close to where they were this year.

Ayo will still be closing out games, one can hope

Not sure everyone’s view but I expect Kofi to be truly dominate, Alan to match Ayo’s offensive numbers, and better team three point shooting. Defensive improvement would exceed my expectations.

This year's team had a propensity for playing tight games, and a surprising knack for winning them. They also seemed often to play and shoot better on the road. Those were my perceptions, although I admit I didn't see them in action much. In Ayo they had a guy who seemed to thrive on pressure and get better at crunch time, like Larry Bird. Replacing that intangible quality will be a huge challenge. I'd like to see the team develop in such a way that late game heroics aren't needed so frequently. Kofi with a year of experience under his belt, and Giorgi returning to the prior year's form would help immensely, as would Trent finding his outside shot.

There is formidable talent coming in and there will be a new dynamic, different chemistry. It's unreasonable to expect the young guys to adapt seamlessly (or even as well as Kofi did this season), but we always can hope.

In the end, the 2019-20 Illini had a unique makeup, with the whole being more than the sum of its parts, IMO. Perhaps that is the manner in which they were most unique. On paper, player-by-player, they weren't particularly imposing. Taken together, they morphed into something unexpected and special, and they thrived on pressure. Over the years, I've become accustomed to Illini teams seeming to wilt under pressure, and to fall too far behind to reasonably allow for a comeback. This team was different: resilient and generally effective under pressure (even pressure that they may have created themselves . . .).

Maybe Coach Underwood had something to do with that. I don't know. I'm eager to see how next season's version develops and what kind of mindset and toughness they display. Replacing

Oops. I accidentally posted. I was just going to end by saying replacing the toughness that Feliz brought to the squad will be a tall order, too. But we now have a platform and foundation to build on, and a number of returning guys who have tasted success and are hungry for more.

Really awaiting to see from where the offense will come next season. Ayo and Feliz were the only two who could be counted upon to score when the opponents defense was motivated to get stops....and now they are gone. No one on the team...ever for that matter....will be able to do what Feliz did off the bench virtually every night. It kept the long droughts at bay most of the time. There is really no go to guy. Maybe Griff can learn to do something other than shoot open shots and Trent can find his drive game and finish like Feliz more often...we sure need that. No one can do what Ayo did but hopefully we may have a bit better shooting from the arc....which is scary to count on night after night but eventually has to be there in order to compete in today's game with the elite teams. Can Damonte learn to finish hard at the rim? Never seen it so we don't know but he has the athleticism to do so. Lot of solid talent but those two missing pieces will be huge holes to fill. Giorgi is a big key if he can find his game and make a step up.

Bottom line is that it promises to be an intriguing season. BU earned his salary last season and will be challenged again.

LOL...after posting I read the above post(s) which pretty much says exactly the same thing with different words.

I can confirm this. Last night I spoke with one of my Iowa buddies who’s in frequent communication with the players. A certain guard (been there forever) is fed up with Fran and thinking of other opportunities. Duke and Auburn were mentioned.
Sounds like Conor McCaffery /s lol.
Which also sounds like Christian McCaffrey, no relation
