Maybe so, however the Illini face planting after the Wisconsin game did not help. Lovie tries to rely on his past when his name was somewhat relevant, and that does not sit well with HS Coaches or players. He has not recruited well since he has been here and the staff he surrounded himself with is not great with recruiting, minus a couple. Lovie does not get a pass, as he has run out of those here in year 5. I have my doubts that a miracle turnaround this year sparks the recruiting trail for the Illini due to Lovie's approach and inability to even close. Now beat OSU!!
This may not be a popular opinion, but if they were to key him go this year, that would be in extremely poor taste. In three of our five games, we were down how many players? We went through how many quarterbacks? When we had our full compliment of O-Lineman and our starter....we looked pretty darn good. They're causing turnovers, they're running the ball....looks pretty good. In a "normal" year, with a full slate of pre-conference games...one could argue that we'd be 5-3 right now(assuming 3-0 non conference record). I don't think anyone here would have a problem with that.

In regards to recruiting, I'd admit that, by rankings, this class doesn't look to be rounding out well. That said, with no football season in the state, we're not seeing "late bloomers" or development on any of these kids. It's a crummy situation for these in state kids.

Lastly, it seems that some believe that the Illinois name is considered to be a job that people just can't pass up. To say the least, you'd have to be drinking the O & B Kool Aid AND have the O & B glasses on at the same time. We went down this road with Zook. We were going to multiple bowl games and after a .500 season(which included a bowl game), he was fired. How did that work out for us? Hint....not too well.

Here, we have Lovie. He takes us to a bowl game last year, we're at 2-3 this year having won two road games....in a pandemic year and this is unacceptable? Have we not learned our lesson?

I think that we're lucky to have this guy, the kids love playing for him, he's an upstanding guy, we're winning games and the record year over year has continued to trend upward. People want to start over, withstand all of the transfers that will follow, bottom out(again) and hope a wing and a prayer happens?

After all of the chaos that he(and all coaches) have had to endure this year....I'd be disappointed in JW if he took that stance. However, if we win 2 games in 2021....that's a different conversation.

Just my take.

He has been provided one excuse after another. We beat a poor Rutgers team and a poor Nebraska team. The wins are great as you said, road wins, but again, what do we do to capitalize on those. His reluctance/arrogance to change his recruiting style and hire the proper staff is what hurts him the most. Recruiting will not be any better under Lovie. We cannot continue to give him passes, year 5 and we still have the same issues. Eastern Michigan last year, the fallout after Wisky....time for a change, barring a miraculous turnaround. Talk to some local High School coaches in Illinois and it will give you an idea of how Lovie is thought of as a HC and recruiter. As an older fan, I just get tired of the excuse train is all. Now I lay low until the OSU game to see what we can do.

Where was this take 2 weeks ago? I don't think you should let the temporary high of a 2 game win streak outshine his overall body of work at Illinois.

The 2 wins was good to prevent a mid-season firing. It also helps the state of the program look not quite so pathetic to potential coaching candidates.

And next year it will be "look at all the underclassmen he had to play".

Both teams now 3-0, and they face one another a week from this Saturday in Buffalo. Winning coach gains a leg up on the other for the Illinois HC job!!

Kent State - averages 44 pts/game
Buffalo - averages 53 pts/game

Assuming each coach could bring 12-15 transfers to Champaign in 2021. Those players could then replace the MAC level recruits on our existing roster.
Buffalo won this game 70-41!!

Check out the offensive stats for Buffalo. RB ran for 8 touchdowns.

I find it simply freakin' incredible that there are actual legit posts on this board advocating for us to hire another coach out of the MAC.

I mean, are we supposed to write off an entire conference in coaching searches just because Beckman was a disaster? Are we saying no to anybody who was an assistant at Ohio State (Beckman and Lovie). I think we'd all be pretty happy with Matt Campbell's 25-19 in conference since he got to Iowa State from the MAC.

I'm not sure what you expect, Illinois is likely not going to flip a coach from a different P5 school. So then your options are a non P5 school, a coordinator, or a retread coach.

It's not like the MAC hasn't produced any good coaches. Most of us would surely rather have a PJ Fleck or Matt Campbell right now.

Might want to study up on the list of former head football coaches from Miami of Ohio just for starters.
Ummmm that is verging on ancient history. Unless you count Lance Guidry, who coached one game as an interim HC and went on to a 21-12 record at McNeese St., the last Miami HC to have an above 500 record after leaving is Dick Crum who left after the 1977 season. I think Sid, Woody, Ara and Bo are unavailable. I like Lewis and Leopold, but not going to base my argument on the “cradle of coaches,”

The op was that we should not consider a coach from the MAC, presumably because we hired a buffoon one time from the MAC and therefore we should never, ever consider a MAC coach. The long history of excellent coaches from the MAC suggests this might not be wise, especially since we're seldom in any position to be picky. Point was to have a bit of understanding of history before dismissing an entire conference.

I do like your idea of hiring someone who is deceased. That's one route we haven't tried yet.

Sounds like Tom Hermann may be available at the end of the session.

let me tell you from ground zero, if these ut people had their way he would be gone yesterday.

things I’ve heard in the last month
1) urban was in the area looking at houses
2) UT is about to fire Hermann and offer 60m for 5 years

I don’t follow UT at all so Idk what has been officially reported vs what is word of mouth. But I know a couple people who are very well tied into the UT community, and I generally get any ut info from them in casual conversation.

I know what your point was, just not sure going back to the 1960s was the way to convince original poster. As I said in my post, I like the two MAC coaches that have been mentioned most often

I still think Miami's amazing history is a good place to start. You are certainly correct that it was a long time ago in the sports world. More current examples: Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, Brian Kelly, Matt Campbell.

If we were in a coaching search this offseason (I don't think we will be), I too would hope we would consider both Lewis and Leipold. I'm not totally sold on either for almost opposite reasons but I honestly think we'd be lucky if either returned a call.

If we are open to the MAC, how about high school? There's this guy in Arkansas that onside kicks and never punts. 17 years as head coach with a total record of 203-29-1. His school has been to 14 semifinals, 11 championship games, and won 8 state championships. He was has been named USA Today National Coach of the Year, coached in the Under Armour All America Game, appeared in multiple television stories including HBO Real Sports, and a 30 for 30 Short - Kevin Kelly.

Video

Until recently, I was living in Texas. I watched a lot of the Slowhorns and they are currently coached by the dumbest coach in college football. He makes Harbaugh look like a Tom Landry. Hermann could not coach a flag football team in a grade school playground. Rather have Lovie than this clown

I want a young energetic guy who can coach kids up. There are coaches at smaller schools that bring it night in and night out. JW will need to make the right call then the right hire. I believe he can do that

Not happening this year. I'm not saying it's the right call, but with the 2 wins and cancelled game(s) it's not the "no argument" decision it looked like it might be 3 weeks ago.
