I am not a huge Coach K fan in general. It's weird timing right after a big loss. But... he's not necessarily wrong. The NCAA needs to be constantly evaluating the situation and being transparent about it with its constituents.

If the Big Ten got a little clever, I would think you could sort of create a handful of smaller bubbles and have a handful of teams stay in each one for a few weeks and essentially play round robin style, then shuffle the bubbles up. That would seem to mitigate a fair bit of the risk without requiring them to rent out Disney World.

You are 100% on the mark about what they should do.

The problem with this however is that it completely shatters the notion of these players being "amateur student-athletes". At least to the extent that the notion hasn't been shattered already.

Coach K isn't dumb. He knows he just got embarrassed on National TV. Why in the world would you let your players play if you think it's usafe. Coach K is a weasel and he'll do anything so save his reputation. Canceling the season while he has one of his worst teams in recent memory would save his basketball reputation.

Leaving aside for the moment the issues associated with amateurism, does this actually threaten that, though? Classes are going to begin online again next semester. In fact, I would bet that most of next semester looks a lot like this semester. There will be online options for these students to maintain their student-athlete status.

The only issue I really see is that the NCAA could technically get their undies in a wad over impermissible benefits, but that would be pretty petty and tone deaf (which is why I feel it's certainly possible they could do it).

Sure but he didn't actually say anything about thinking it contributed to the loss, right? I mean, I am sure he (and everyone else in the business) is unhappy that his young team hasn't had any exhibition games to sharpen up and the schedule they do have is subject to random cancellations, but every team is dealing with that, including us. I just didn't read his comments (this time) as an excuse.

I read it as an excuse because of the hypocrisy. He just let his players play. "I would just like for the safety, the mental and physical health of players and staff to assess where we're at." That is a direct quote. If it's all about the players safety, why let them play a team from the middle of the country? Coach K is full of excuses, but he usually has to good of a team to use them.

When Ayo plays tram ball, we normally win. Ayo when games are going bad will try to play hero ball like against Baylor. We need him to play within the system and he will get his 15-20 points and be part of the scoring instead of being the scoring. I relate it to when Jordan tried to do it all in is first 4 years. He tried to carry the whole Bulls team on his back. Until he choked it back and utilized the rest of the team like Pippen, Grant and others, then they became the dynasty. Ayo needs to let the game come to him. Play within the system and Belo will get others involved and we will have games where 5 guys are in double figures. That’s how Nova and Virginia won their titles. That is how Baylor and the Zags play. Getting everyone involved. If we can control the game wits our scorers, we can beat anyone.

I don’t see anything wrong with what Coach K said. Very similar to what Bilas said on the broadcast. There should be ongoing assessment of the situation. I know as basketball fans in general and Illini fans specifically, we want to see the season plow forward so there is b-ball and the Illini can take advantage of the team it has. Is that the best thing to do? I don’t know, but very possibly not. Should there be ongoing assessment of situation? Absolutely. As to the timing of the comments, sure doesn’t look great. But did he just blurt out that comment or was it a response to a question on the situation? And as to why he played the game — because it is his job to. Coach K might be a powerful coach, but I highly doubt he has the power to hold his team out when the administration says they’re going to play. I realize a lot of people hate Duke and Coach K — I’m also not a fan of either — but this criticism seems kind of silly to me.

I keep coming back for Curbelo...

Overall good win, Duke isnt that good yet, they will improve and we won pretty comfortably but maaaan...

I'm over here evil grinning when I watch Curbelo. He is doing things that most players never figure out. His intangibles are outstaing, his vision and anticipation are unbelievable for a Freshman. Little things, cradling the ball through big men traffic, looking defenders off for passes, head fakes, moving defenders with his eyes, quick hands, anticipates the ball in passing lanes, VERY quick crossover, terrific passer in traffic, creative with his dribble and creating space...I just love it.

He UNDOUBTEDLY is going to turn the ball over a ton. But I think what I love the most is his short memory. He is not fazed by a mistake and I love that confidence. He is special, I think next year we have something really big with him.
Dan, can we get a gif of Underwood just saying "What are you doing?" over and over to Curbelo after one of his crazy turnovers? I was laughing so hard when it happened. Would like to relive that moment if possible.

I absolutely loved everything about the game except a few of those turnovers. The offensive rebounds were because Duke missed so badly. We are a solid rebounding team so im not too worried about that. One thing i noticed and im sure we all have noticed is Kofi is so weak with the ball inside. For how big he is, there is no way that it should be that easy to rip it from him and be blocked. He should dominate when he gets the ball within 3 feet. Over the coarse of the season, I am not too worried about him as i know he will get better but in a close game, those miscues can come back and haunt. Now, Lets beat Mizzou!

BOOM! Feed my ego.
Good win, fellas. I expected a loss and it was a convincing win where Duke never really got in the game.

A mere 1.5 months ago he was all gung ho. Seems he now knows his team is not so good.

https://goduke.com/news/2020/10/28/mens-basketball-mike-krzyzewski-press-conference-quotes.aspx

Me thinks he was updated back then - that the fall and winter were going to be rough for Covid - but two butt kickings by B1G teams seems to have changed his mind about what is right.

Also, as an aside, did he not acknowledge BU after the game? It seemed like BU was doing the ol 'walk 10 steps closer, wave and say good game routine' and the camera panned to K and he was already heading out the door. Deep down the guy comes off as a spoiled whiner.

People don't want to hear it, but Ayo didn't score like he needs to if he wants to win those awards. I agree, he had an "ehh" game that didn't live up to his expectations.
Just curious. A team only gets so many shots in a game. Whose shots do you feel that he should have taken?

Amazing to have a boring game beating a talented Duke team. If they ever started hitting 3s, that game could have gotten rough, but they were cold the entire night. Fantastic performance for the good guys.

If you would have told me before the game we'd see 18 Illinois TOs , I'd have been very worried. But guys were shooting the 3 ball extremely well, and seemed to have the will to respond whenever Duke started a push. IMO there's a lot to clean up, but it's fun to have a game that drama-free with the team winning.

I don’t see anything wrong with what Coach K said.

The revenue sports issue was already litigated by football. The SEC said that football is religion*, end of discussion, and so on we went. I don't agree personally, but I get the push to keep playing.

I agree with the notion of making things safer, as much as reasonably possibly, with innovative scheduling, flexibility, better protocols, etc.., but I can't see the main issue, of whether or not to play at all, being revisited, especially with vaccinations about to begin. A couple months pause in play makes a ton of sense, but I can't see them doing anything that risks or conflicts with the CFP. Strange, strange, year.....

*Obviously it is for them.

okay, so I kinda assumed Garza/Kispert/Butler would have done this a couple times already. Guess I over hyped their passing/rebounding in my head. I'll stop with the Ayo hot takes for the year ;)
Garza was 6 for 20 shooting last night. Is that a player of the year game?
